Thank you to our awesome sponsors - Castle Group GA Sports Australia and CITA Services. Thank you to our families who have always been supportive from day 1. And finally, the most loyal people - our fans! Without you, these lions will have difficulty finding motivation to go out there and perform the way we do out on the field. Thank you for being with us, for your well wishes and on behalf of the club we wish you all the best for the new year, and please continue supporting us in the months and years to come :)

21.01.2022 T20 Division 2 - Round 2 - Castle Hill vs Sydney Lions at Fred Caterson Reserve, Castle Hill Leading into game 2 of season 2019/20, the Lions were determined to shake off the rust and put in a better show following last week's tough loss against Kissing Point at The Glade Reserve. Captain Chandra won the toss and chose to bowl. Castle Hill got off to a flyer, reaching 0-35 inside 6 overs. The Lions looked in danger of conceding a large score with the openers in ominous touch ...that is until the crucial breakthrough came with Sanuja taking a smart catch in the deep off Chandra to give the Lions a much needed boost. From here on in, the Lions consistently picked up wickets to put the brakes on Castle Hill's innings. Thanks to the all round efforts of Sanuja (4 ov. 1/21), Kapil (4 ov. 2/19), Chandra (4 ov. 2/18), Dinuka (4 ov. 2/8) and Anantha (2 ov. 2/4), the Lions were set a target of 95 for victory. In reply, openers Sanuja (22) and Chandra (20) got the Lions off to the perfect start reaching 0/34 in 6 overs. Though in classic Sydney Lions fashion, halfway through the chase a mini collapse of 3-8 gave Castle Hill a sniff of running through the middle and lower order. Gaurav (27*) at no.3 showed his class and expertly anchored the innings and a late flourish from Dinuka (17*) ensured the target was reached with 2 overs to spare. Lions win by 6 wickets and thanks to favourable % and other round results, it was enough to progress through to the T20 semis! Let's keep up the momentum and reach the final! This week we start the regular season with one dayers against Kissing Pt (B Reserve) and West Penno - Red (C Grade) Team: Sanuja, Chandra, Gaurav, Anantha, Harsimrat, Dinuka, Kapil, Randil, Saminda, Tharindu, Nuwan - MW (Mystery Writer)

21.01.2022 Lions took on Hornsby today and played an awesome game of cricket despite going down by 35 runs. No hatrick of wins for the boys, but today there was a team hatrick, an awesome fightback to reduce Hornsby from 1/156 to 187 all out (31 runs for 9 wickets) by our gun bowlers, and one of the best counter attacking innings I've ever seen from a Lions batsman. It was a pity that Nalin (top scored with 73) kept losing partners during the chase. But to take the score from 23/2 in th...e tenth over to where we ended just goes to show the impressive character in this team. Scores: Hornsby 187 (35 overs) Lions: 152 (35 overs) Video: Presentation (conducted by Sammy) Man of the match: Nalin De Silva

19.01.2022 Last game before the season break. Round 9 saw us take up the battle with Berowra who's coming first in the ladder. After many topsy turvy moments during the game, the teams settled for a draw! Captaincy debut for Nuwan Fernando and it's fair to say he had an eventful first match as the skipper. A spirited effort from the boys on day 2 caused a major Berowra collapse (from 168/4 to 194 all out). Manav with 5 wickets, with good support from Kapil and the rest of the bowlers. B...atting wasn't that easy upfront as lions lost Jals and Yoyo quite early in the chase, but an inspiring fightback began with Saminda battling it out after being asked to open (24 runs), along with handy contributions from Manav (47) and Lakshan (13) who put on 60+ for the fourth wicket. Kudos to Rohan who held his nerve with the lower order to hang in for a draw. Great first half lads, let's keep this going in 2019! Berowra- 194 (Manav 5 wickets, Kapil 2) Lions - 163/9 (Manav 47, Sammy 24) Presentation below: Kapil leading the way with some nice words to sum up our efforts. Nuwan can be seen having his sixth beer on the trot while Ro is producing a sheepish smile ;)

19.01.2022 INSPIRED FIGHTBACK GIVES HOPE DESPITE TOUGH LOSS Before the start of second day's play, co captain Chandra had a gloomy look on his face, and when asked why the smile was missing, the answer was simple - 'we let each other down last week, it was poor cricket from us'. True, it's a bit difficult to argue against that statement as day 1 batting blunders proved too costly and ultimately resulted in a defeat. Last couple of games it's been our bowlers who stepped up to lead us to...Continue reading

19.01.2022 T20 Division 3 - Round 2 - Sydney Lions vs Beecroft at Glenhaven Reserve The Sydney Lions were determined to bounce back from their disappointing loss in game 1 as they headed into game 2. Winning the toss, captain Nakulan elected to bowl first, which got the Lions off to a cracking start. The opening bowling pair of Lakshan and Aman started with a maiden each, and after their spells were complete Beecroft was left at 3/8 after 6 overs. Danusha and Rohan kept the pressure goi...ng by picking up another wicket and keeping runs tight. Just as Beecroft were starting to look comfortable, the pair of Tarush and Seshan struck, taking two wickets in quick succession to slow down Beecroft even further, leaving them at 6/40 after 15 overs. The last 5 overs belonged to Beecroft as they fought their way to a total of 69 only losing 1 more wicket thanks to a brilliant run out by Lakshan. Sydney Lions needed 70 to win. The opening trio of Aman, Seshan and Nikhil started strong getting Sydney Lions to 1/30 after 7 overs. However, Beecroft began to fight back as they started to take crucial wickets reducing the Lions to 5/49 after 15 overs and removing the important batsman Seshan who contributed 24. In the midst of this mini collapse, Rohan managed to stay at the crease while slowly wearing down the target. In the 16th over, Rohan changed the game by hitting back to back boundaries and leaving the Lions 10 runs to score with 4 overs left. Beecroft kept their bowling tight but in the last over, needing 5 to win, Rohan kept his cool and waited for the right ball to send flying over the boundary rope to seal the win for the Sydney Lions with a 6. The Lions won by 3 wickets, but unfortunately it wasn't enough to grant a spot in the semi-final due to 2 low scoring games. We hope to extend our form from this game into the regular season and notch more wins for the Sydney Lions. Team: Aman, Seshan, Nikhil, Rohan, Danusha, Sohil, Lakshan, Tarush, Sachin, Jefferson, Nakulan - MW (Mystery Writer)

18.01.2022 B Reserve - Round 2 - Sydney Lions vs Kenthurst Upper Hills at Glenhaven Oval In Round 2, the Lions hosted their first home game against Kenthurst Upper Hills at Glenhaven Oval. Chandra loss the toss and Kenthurst elected to bat first under overcast skies. Kapil and Nuwan started proceedings with the new ball as they made life difficult for the Kenthurst openers. Kapil (2/12) brought about the first breakthrough with the score at 1/15 in 7 overs. Dinuka (1/15) and Priyantha (...1/25) were brought into the attack shortly after with Dinuka prising the second wicket at 2/32 at 13 overs. Just before the drinks break, Priyantha produced a magic delivery, uprooting the stumps. At drinks the score was 3/47 in 17.1 overs. Kenthurst's opener Summerhays was set and playing well up until drinks when Tharindu (2/23) was introduced into the attack and produced the vital breakthrough. Kenthurst were now at 4/70 in 21 overs. From here on in, the Lions managed to keep the scoring under control with disciplined bowling and fielding with Kenthurst ending up at 6/104 at 35 overs. In reply, Jals and Chandra fronted up to face the new ball and Jals starting with a bang going 4 4 and 6 in the first over. However this was short lived as he fell hooking in the second over for 14. In the same over, Chandra played a wild hoick to be out caught for a golden duck! The Lions were at 2/15 at 2 overs with Gaurav and Tharindu new at the crease and a partnership desperately needed. Gaurav (33*) and Tharindu (38) did exactly that, rotating the strike well and punishing the loose deliveries with a partnership of 65 that put the Lions well on their way to the target. Gaurav anchored the innings expertly and with another late flurry of runs from Dinuka (27*) put the finishing touches on another successful run chase. With this win, the Lions sits on top at the end of Round 2! Kenthurst Upper Hills: 6/104 35 overs Sydney Lions: 3/115 24 overs. Team: Jals, Chandra, Gaurav, Tharindu, Dinuka, Manav, Anantha, Harsimrat, Kapil, Priyantha, Nuwan - MW (Mystery Writer)

17.01.2022 B Reserve - Round 13 - Kenthurst Upper Hills vs Sydney Lions at Fred Caterson Reserve, Castle Hill Come the penultimate round of the regular season, the Lions were sitting on 6th and with most teams within striking distance of each other heading towards finals, every win has become vital. Captain Jals lost the toss and the Lions were sent in to bat under sunny skies. With the recent deluge, run scoring became difficult as the outfield had become a paddock. Coupled with discip...lined bowling from Kenthurst, the Lions collapsed and ended up all out for 82 in 32 overs. In a tough outing for the batsmen, opener Sanuja (29) top scored for the Lions forming a 27 run partnership with Gaurav (15). With a low score to defend, a massive effort was required from the Lions bowlers and they sure delivered! Openers Kapil (6 ov. 1/13) and Nuwan (4 ov. 1/5) set the tone with a incisive opening spell that tightened the screws on the Kenthurst top order. Sanuja followed up his great knock with the bat with an even better show with the ball as he claimed figures of 4/4 in 5 overs! All the bowlers chipped in, giving little respite for Kenthurst and some great work in the field (with two runouts including a freakish effort by Kapil and the head umpire) sealed a close 11 run win. Round 14 see the Lions host Hornsby District at Glenhaven Oval with a spot in the finals up for grabs! . Sydney Lions: 82 (32 overs) Kenthurst Upper Hills: 71 (30 overs) Team: Sanuja, Jals, Gaurav, Tharindu, Dinuka, Priyantha, Anantha, Kapil, Nuwan, Saminda, Randil - MW

17.01.2022 Round 8! A brilliant knock by Jals - 163 A splendid bowling performance from all 9 bowlers used and well backed up by great catching from the boys. A win after two tough losses for the lions.

17.01.2022 Back to winning ways! Lions defeated Castle Hill by...... A LOT of runs! After winning the toss lions decided to have a bat in slightly overcast conditions. New found opener Chandra the captain (40* retired) started nice and slow with Nisal (39) against a decent opening attack. The openers saw us through to a respectable total at drinks and we were sitting pretty at 56/0 just before 16 overs were completed. Not so pretty was the opening bowler who had to be taken to the doc a...fter splitting his webbing in an attempt of catching a return from Nisal who smacked the leather out of the ball. Slight destruction began when the guys started accelerating with some terrific shots, and destruction escalated to absolute carnage when Manav and Nalin came to the middle and started toying with Castle Hill's bowlers. Both notched up impressive 50s that helped us reach 205/4 after our 35 overs had completed (two big sixes from Nalin in the last over putting the icing on the cake). The opposition started very cautiously and it soon became a situation similar to watching paint dry as they gave up on any chance of chasing up the score once the top order was dismissed. Lakshan (3 wickets) and Kapil were brilliant with the ball as the early pressure these guys created along with the other bowlers helped us win quite comfortably in the end. A much better fielding display from last week, but still can work harder to see more improvement. There were a few contenders for the man of the match, but Manav managed to beat Nalin and Lakshan thanks to his timely little cameo that helped us reach a commanding score. Lions: 205/4 Castle Hill: 78/8

11.01.2022 B Reserve - Round 9 - WPHC vs Sydney Lions at Annangrove Park Come the halfway mark of the season, the Lions were sitting on 6th and were eager to get back to winning ways in the one-dayers after a slew of drawn 2-day matches before the end of year break. Captain Jaliya won the toss and elected to send West Penno to bat first under humid, overcast skies....Continue reading

10.01.2022 EPIC BOWLING MASTERCLASS LEADS TO COMPREHENSIVE WIN AGAINST ISLANDERS! Super bowling effort by Nuwan, Kapil, Chandra, and Rohan set up the game for us. Kapil challenged the speed clock as the ball skidded past the bat many times. Nuwan was the main destroyer (yes - you read this before a few times) as he wrecked havoc in islanders' top order and collected 4 wickets in the process. Rohan and Chandra also joined the party as the former outsmarted the batter by changing to spin... and bowling him, while the latter took a brilliant catch of his own bowling to dismiss their highest scorer soon after drinks. That catch was out of this world as Chandra held on to the ball that probably came back at 200km/h. Fielding definitely was much better in this game, however there's always room for further improvement. New opening duo Jals and Chandra started really well, and Jals took full advantage of the generous offering in over # 2 where 19 runs were scored. Although we ended up losing 4 wickets, each batter got a start and contributed well to chase 85, a lesson for the next few games perhaps to take a bit more time and pace one's innings nicely to finish the game confortably. Huge win in the end given the context of the tournament - currently sitting at 3rd with two big games coming up against some quality opposition. Can the boys hold their nerve? Definitely yes! Well done to the playing 11 - Jals, Chandra, Nisal, Yohan, Nalin, Rohan, Harsimrat, Kapil, Nuwan, Kasun, Anantha. Video: Man of the match - Nuwan Fernando (volume up!)

09.01.2022 Nikhil Gadey remember the name! Nikhil scored his maiden ton against the St Ives CC in HKHDCA C1 grade last Saturday and finished 106 not-out in a nearly run-a-ball knock in the first round of the season. He showed some great form in both trial games and took that momentum to the season opener. Well done Nikhil and congratulations from Sydney Lions family!

07.01.2022 B Reserve - Round 1 - Kissing Point vs Sydney Lions at Auluba Oval, Sth Turramurra EPIC ALL-ROUND PERFORMANCE LEADS TO EMPHATIC WIN! Fresh off a win in the T20's, the Lions of B Reserve were keen to keep up the momentum in Round 1 of the regular season against Kissing Point.... Captain Chandra continued his good form at the toss, electing to bowl first. Opening bowlers Kapil and Nuwan started off steadily with Kissing Point 0/7 in 5 overs. The match was turned on its head as Nuwan the Destroyer wrecked havoc on Kissing Point's top and middle order in an inspired opening spell of 7 overs 4/11 which included a ripper catch by Lucky in the covers! Dinuka was introduced into the attack and in his second over, claimed two wickets in the over. At drinks, Kissing Point were reduced to 6/37 in 17 overs. After the drinks break, Kissing Point regrouped and formed useful lower order partnerships while the Lions kept chipping away. Eventually Kissing Point were bowled out for 107 inside 32 overs thanks to supporting acts from Kapil (5.2 overs, 2/4), Dinuka (5 overs, 2/18) and Priyantha (6 overs, 2/25). In reply, the Lions had an early setback in the first over as Jaliya (4) fell victim to a sharp stumping. Chandra (20) and Gaurav (36) held the innings together with a crucial 40 runs partnership. Gaurav was at his brutal best, pouncing on any loose deliveries from Kisso's bowlers. At one stage his last 7 scoring shots were all 4's! Gaurav shared a 20 runs partnership with Tharindu (5) and 25 runs with Dinuka, who himself scored a quickfire 21* from 5 scoring shots that included two incredible 6's and two 4's! Talk about clean striking! Dinuka and Sanuja (8*) wrapped up the chase after 14 overs to seal a 6 wicket win for the Lions. At the end of Round 1, the Lions are sitting pretty at the top of the ladder. Let's keep this up! Round 2 sees the Lions hosting Kenthurst Upper Hills, who enjoyed an opening win against Lankan Islanders. Team: Jals, Chandra, Gaurav, Tharindu, Dinuka, Sanuja, Harsimrat, Nuwan, Kapil, Priyantha, Randil - MW (Mystery Writer)

07.01.2022 Round 3 one-dayer against Hornsby: Some highlights from Lions great batting display, photo coverage courtesy of Chandra Gunarathne (Sydney Lions 8/171 off 35 overs, Gaurav 80, game called off due to rain)

05.01.2022 JALS & BOWLERS TOO STRONG FOR MT COLAH Ever been to an Indian restaurant in Sydney and ordered a 'Chicken 65'? That dish is special, delicious and highly entertaining! 'Jals 163' had similar features over the weekend. A dish that was produced with sweet timing of the ball, latched on to anything short with minimum fuss, and dismissed handsomely to anything pitched up to him. Mt Colah bowlers struggled as they were all over the place with their line and length on day 1 as the ...lions won the toss and batted first. Jals and Yoyo put on a century partnership at a run-a-ball for the second wicket. Jals kept batting.... and batting... and batting. It was one of those special innings that is quite rare to see these days. After losing two close games and a century drought for the team this season, Jals produced his best innings as he took the lions to a commanding score. Declaration came in the 57th over as Jals the selfless man got out on 163 (21x4, 6x6) - leaving the bowlers with 10 overs to have a go at Mt Colah before stumps on day 1. Despite not picking up any wickets late on day 1, lions started day 2 with very good energy on the field and courtesy of bowling spearhead Kapil, we managed to pick up 3 wickets in the first hour. As a steady partnership was growing, Nalin changed ends and held on to a brilliant caught and bowled that came quite low to him. Manav our special twelfth man grabbed a one-handed screamer (that.... was.... awesome!) Special agent 007 aka Nuwan came back for his second spell and picked up a crucial wicket in the last over before tea. And if that wasn't enough to impress, he did the same in the last over before drinks at 5 (got to love when a plan works - not so much the chest smashing celebration with yoyo who is not feeling the best with his ribs since then). Dhammi came and went in a rush as he was only 'half way there' or else he would be living on a prayer and not have such a 'nice day' with Jon Bon Jovi. Eventually the lions wrapped it up just 30 minutes before stumps by dismissing the well set batter as the last wicket. Some awesome catching, decent ground fielding (special shout out to Lucky and Lakshan), disciplined bowling from all the bowlers and a Jals 163 were the main contributing factors for the victory. Next week we take on... Berowra! Bring it on.... - MW

05.01.2022 First game for the new year and lions faced Kissing Point in a one-dayer. Won the toss and put them in to bat on a very warm day. However the decision to field first proved a brilliant one when Nuwan, Lakshan, and Rohan bowled so well together to take 4 wickets inside 15 overs. After the drinks break things didn't look pretty as lions dropped at least 7 catches in the remaining 17 overs which was the difference in the end as Kissing point beat us by 37 runs. Apart from the di...sciplined bowling from KP, our batters found it difficult to score runs freely as the outfield was very slow - in a normal ground where a well timed cover drive can earn you at least 3 runs only allowed us one run at this ground. Lakshan and Jals were the only batters to put up a challenge as they did their best to battle against the bowlers, heat, and the thick outfield. Plenty to work on before next week as lions will want to redeem themselves and put on a better performance, especially in their fielding. Video: player of the match for the lions - Nuwan Fernando with 4 wickets

03.01.2022 SEMI-FINAL SHOWDOWN AGAINST KISSING POINT After a gutsy win in the final round against Hornsby, the Lions had finally earned their ticket into the semi-finals, finishing 3rd after narrowly missing out in season 2017/18. The Lions were up against one of the in-form teams of the competition in Kissing Point, who finished 2nd, but the boys were up for the challenge at North Turramurra....Continue reading

02.01.2022 Wait is over! Sydney Lions fielding three teams this season in B, C and C3, that’s a great news and shows the resilience in the community during this unprecedented times in our lives. As a club, we all had a safe off-season and worked really hard to bring this great game to more cricket lovers in our community. 01.01.2022 T20 Grand Final update: In testing conditions lions posted 94 in their 20 against a disciplined attack, and went down in the 18th over to Berowra. Not our day, but we fought well till the end. Special mention to Nisal Lorensu Hewa who played a classy 27 and also took the first wicket (man of the match pictured below). Focus now shifts back to the regular season where the lions notched up victory against Kissing Point yesterday in their two-dayer - report to follow.
