25.01.2022 Hypoglycaemia (dangerously low blood sugar) is a common occurence on insulin medication, and a major cause of anxiety and distress for diabetics, particularly type 1 diabetics. Parents of children with type 1 diabetes report marked stress around insulin dosing, especially worrying about hypoglycaemia overnight. Fortunately, we now have access to continuous glucose monitors to help track blood sugars in real time. However, the greatest tool in limiting risk of hypoglycaemia is reduced insulin dosing! Patients on low carb diets report reduced insulin dosing, better controlled blood sugars and HbA1c, and overall fewer hypoglycaemia episodes. Diet has a huge role in the management of your diabetes, and our team is passionate about making life for diabetic patients as normal and worry free as possible.

15.01.2022 This week is National Diabetes Week. The focus this year is on diabetes and the impact it has on a persons mental health and emotional wellbeing. At Sydney Low Carb Specialists we are striving to ease this burden by challenging the long held belief that diabetes is a chronic progressive disease that will invariably worsen and lead to complications over time. The current Australian dietary guidelines for diabetics that advise eating 6 serves of grains a day is setting people ...up for failure. The current mindset of adding medication after medication to achieve blood sugar control is a band-aid approach that ignores the source of the problem, high dietary intake of carbohydrates with consequent high circulating insulin (or high insulin needs). We want to give people the positive news there is another effective option for management of the condition that considers the root cause of diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes reversal is achievable. Type 1 diabetics can manage their condition with less blood sugar excursions from the normal range and thus less insulin requirements. Gestational diabetes can be treated with a real food approach that results in being able to remain off medications or, if they are needed, to be on the lowest doses. We believe equipping people to take real control over their diabetes through a low carbohydrate, healthy fat approach is a powerful way to improve mental health and wellbeing! See more

08.01.2022 Vitamin D supplements are ideally viewed as more of an insurance policy for when your sunlight exposure is inadequate or you live in a geographical area that has minimal sunlight. A common question our patients ask is how many units of vitamin D to take? The supplement dose should be individualised according to how much sunlight exposure you have, your vitamin D blood level and the time of year (more supplemental vitamin D is needed in Winter). In Australia, the most common v...itamin D supplement is 1000 IU (international units) per day, taken in capsule or liquid form. But did you know that there are more convenient, cheaper and effective ways to take a Vitamin D supplement such as: 7000 IU capsule taken once a week although it can be taken up to twice a week 50000 IU capsule taken once a month which is only available with a prescription 600000 IU yearly injection available with a prescription, that can be given into the upper arm Higher supplement dosing should be carefully supervised by a medical professional. Supplements are not designed to be taken with a set and forget dosing approach! Knowing your vitamin D status and optimising it is more important than ever because low vitamin D levels have been shown to increase the likelihood of acquiring lung related illnesses such as Covid-19.

05.01.2022 We have all seen the news footage of staggering numbers of patients on ventilators in intensive care units around the world, suffering from the complications of COVID-19. The reports from our frontline colleagues battling this pandemic in some of the worst hit countries are that the patients who are most vulnerable to having such complications from coronavirus are those who have chronic metabolic disease. Many of the patients are either prediabetic or diabetic, have high bloo...d pressure or are carrying excess body fat. Smokers and those with heavy alcohol consumption are also featuring heavily in those suffering from COVID-19 complications. What can be done? This pandemic is unprecedented and were living in uncertain times. BUT there are things still in your control. Your health and wellbeing can be optimised! Type 2 diabetes and prediabetes can be put into remission and this is achievable in weeks when applying effective low carbohydrate nutrition principles, focusing on being active and keeping our stress levels in check. This short interview from our UK colleague, cardiologist Dr. Aseem Malhotra, explains who is most at risk of COVID-19 complications and what can be done now to change this trajectory. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHAnzhRZFZ0

03.01.2022 A CGM costs $92 for 2 weeks in Australia. It is an invaluable tool to show the spikes in blood sugar that occur from foods considered healthy by the standards of the Australian dietary guidelines. Things like muesli bars, oats, whole grain wraps/breads and most fruits cause considerable blood sugar rises and thus demand the pancreas to produce more insulin to normalise blood sugar. The problem is the pancreas cant keep this up for long and many newly diagnosed type 2 diabet...ics have actually had 10+ years of high insulin before they were even picked up as diabetics. We have no affiliation with CGM companies. We just think it is a very useful tool that helps with real time understanding of how foods impact blood sugar, provides accountability and helps individuals to make choices that are better for their level of carbohydrate tolerance. Afterall we really should rename diabetes to carbohydrate intolerance because that is what it really is! See more

Helpful tips on minimising the risk of oxalate kidney stones and other oxalate related problems: Boil high oxalate leafy greens before eating Eat adequate calcium in your diet as calcium binds to oxalate in the gut, thus reducing oxalate absorption ... Avoid ingesting large amounts of high oxalate foods all at once - this is why the green smoothies full of spinach are off the menu!
