02.01.2022 In January 2018, Uighur academic Abdukerim Rahman disappeared. Later, he was found to have been sent to a political re-education camp in China. A renowned academic known as the "father of Uyhjur folklore studies," he was beloved by his students at Xinjiang University and published over 20 books. In 2019 PEN International added him to their annual case list of detained individuals, though luckily he was released later that year.
