25.01.2022 It was fun to chat to Peter Birch on Talking HealthTech about the past, present, and future of Sydney Phobia Clinic!

25.01.2022 Managing your child's phobia can be a tricky balance of trying to be a supportive parent and trying to do the 'right' thing for improvement. Here are some suggestions:

23.01.2022 "Many people have anxiety about visiting the dentist, but for some people this fear can evolve into a phobia. When the phobia becomes too overwhelming, they avoid visiting the dentist and seeking treatment all together. This behaviour can lead to poor oral health outcomes which have the potential to impact your overall wellness and cause greater complications in life."

21.01.2022 Phobias of knees, cheese, animals, and bubbles! Phobias can be varied and extreme, but in some ways very much the same. However, just because the focus of the phobia can seem 'funny', is it appropriate to use people's fears as entertainment in this way? What do you think?

20.01.2022 Flying has never been safer however some level of anxiety about flying affects up to 40% of people and around 10% of people avoid flying or need help to cope.

20.01.2022 The holidays can be a challenging time- we hear about it first hand with clients often discussing how their phobias and general anxiety interferes with the practicalities and/or enjoyment of being with loved ones. We hope everyone stays safe over this Christmas and has some positive goals for the new year!

19.01.2022 Fears of flying can get in the way of holidaying, visiting friends and family, and attending overseas weddings.

18.01.2022 Having a needle phobia is a real barrier to getting the COVID-19 vaccine. Those with needle phobia need to be aware that effective treatment is available, but that it may take several weeks to get to a point where getting an injection feels possible. Start now and look for a psychologist who can help. Reach out if you need us to help you find someone in your area!

18.01.2022 We're seeing an increase in needle phobia in the clinic. Want to know more and get some tips? This is a good start.

18.01.2022 There's a difference between 'normal' anxiety, agoraphobia, and other anxiety disorders. Here's some information to help figure it out and what to do next.

18.01.2022 Think your phobia is a bit strange? It is not uncommon to have an uncommon phobia!

18.01.2022 If you have a fear of flying like these celebs- whether it be safety related, due to heights, claustrophobia, or a fear of losing control; whether you avoid flying altogether or have developed a bunch of specific behaviours or superstitions to cope- consider coming to our upcoming Fear of Flying group course starting NEXT WEEK! Email or message for details.

17.01.2022 Though they might sound strange or even funny, phobias are more serious than most people think.

17.01.2022 "Needle phobia is a direct threat to public health. Those who are afraid of shots may not get them. With COVID-19 upon us, addressing needle fear becomes more than making a doctors visit more pleasant. Now, its truly a lifesaving endeavor." Effective treatment also takes time, don't wait until you have to get a needle to seek help overcoming needle phobia.

17.01.2022 It was great to have Luke in our office trying out the VR and fun to join the team at House of Wellness talking all about phobias!

16.01.2022 As an essential service, Sydney Phobia Clinic remains open and given these challenging times, we have extended our services to include treatment for a wider range of concerns. Feel free to contact us should you require any support 02)8540 8739.

16.01.2022 Confidence, assertiveness, and resilience are important attributes that are protective for mental health and are also strengths that can be recruited in psychological treatment. A primary avenue to learn and practice these is on the sports field. So, in support of psychological building blocks and overall wellbeing, we are so excited to be partnering with Stealers Baseball and Softball Club. We look forward to working with club members and also celebrating individual efforts of facing fears, 'putting yourself out there' and overall health. Go Stealers!

16.01.2022 A funhouse for phobias! Could you work your way towards facing your fears with this kind of exposure?

14.01.2022 I am consistently in awe of clients achievements. Shared with permission, R has done a lot of work and has come a long way in 5 sessions! Congratulations, R, Im proud of you!

14.01.2022 As phobias are one of the most common anxiety conditions, it is no wonder that a fair few celebrities have phobias. Do any of these surprise you?

14.01.2022 Have you ever wondered what the difference is between a fear and a phobia? How phobias are developed, maintained, and how we treat them? I am excited to be taking the stage at World Science Festival Brisbane 2020 from 25-29 March! Join me on the day or look out for more on this over the coming weeks! Corrie ... 13.01.2022 Do clowns give you the creeps? Movies have a lot to answer for when it comes to phobias, especially clown phobias.

13.01.2022 Many of our claustrophobia clients present due to upcoming or overdue MRI scans. Like all medical-related phobias, to avoid not only makes the anxiety worse but it could also have serious implications for your overall health. MRIs are a challenging experience and there really isn't an easy or straight forward way to get practice and build confidence with MRIs. Thankfully, virtual reality helps us out.

13.01.2022 I love a good list- some of these were new to us!

12.01.2022 Breathing is more important- and possibly less straight forward- than you may think.

12.01.2022 Becoming a parent can be stressful and overwhelming. Unexpectedly, it can also be a time where new worries and intrusive thoughts can arise. Like with most things though, it is how we react that can determine how much these difficulties persist.

12.01.2022 Are you more worried about getting a needle than you are about getting COVID. Try these steps to prepare for the vaccine roll out.

11.01.2022 This is great news for our clients

11.01.2022 Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder is more than just 'picky eating'. Although it is classified as an eating disorder, it is also different from the common eating disorders as it is not weight or appearance focussed. Rather, new foods are avoided due to them causing extreme distress and as such, ARFID responds well to CBT treatment similar to food phobias. At Sydney Phobia Clinic, we offer treatment for ARFID and other food phobias with our VR-enhanced treatments, and Cool Kids programs.

10.01.2022 One in seven Australians (15%) have a clinically diagnosable phobia- this means their phobia causes marked distress and/or interferes with their daily functioning.

09.01.2022 Tokophobia is incredibly complex, and tonight on The Sunday Project we speak to one woman about her battle with her severe fear of birth.

07.01.2022 A fear of driving is not always stemming from having had a car accident, and is not always directly fear about having a car accident. Virtual reality can help by providing driving practice environments for sufferers of driving phobia to get their confidence back behind the wheel.

06.01.2022 The Ferris wheel is back in Sydneys beautiful Darling Harbour. Ferris wheels often feature in our fear of heights, claustrophobia, and fear of flying programs! The unique experience isnt designed to be exhilarating and therefore provides a fantastic learning environment to test out anxiety management that might be triggered by height, enclosed space, movement, and/or not being in control. Even if you dont have a desire to go on a Ferris Wheel, if you would benefit from practice for any of the above concerns, we recommend integrating some rides into your overall practice. If you happen to give it a go, feel free to duck in to visit our friends at Flight Experience Sydney who help us out with the Fear of Flying courses.

06.01.2022 "One way of describing the systematic desensitization process is to create new memoriesto overwrite the old ones to some extentin which the external cues are associated with relaxation rather than fear."

05.01.2022 Where do we draw the line in anxiety treatment, in the current COVID environment? For people that already had difficulty understanding which worries and avoidant/compulsive behaviours were un/reasonable, this is especially challenging and will likely be harder to come back from.

05.01.2022 Managing specific fears requires bravery. The take home advice: Focus out, not in Practice positive thinking Plan to be brave Remember the why

05.01.2022 If you're motivated, an intensive block of anxiety treatment- compared to HIIT training- might be for you!

05.01.2022 Does Valentine's Day trigger your phobias?

04.01.2022 Changes in work format may force some of us to have to do things that we were previously avoiding, such as using the phone. Practicing by calling friends with questions or role playing work calls can be a helpful start. https://www.abc.net.au//coronavirus-working-from-/12108988

04.01.2022 It's part of life at the moment, so here are some tips if you're finding mask-ing up challenging or anxiety-provoking

03.01.2022 In addition to the safety concerns that most typically underly a fear of flying, people with fears of heights, enclosed spaces, vomit, and germs can find flying challenging and may outright avoid getting on a plane. Even the occasional person with a dog phobia might avoid flying for concern of sniffer dogs at the airport or therapy/guide dogs on board. Now it seems even people with bird phobias can not travel in peace!

02.01.2022 We're still getting a lot of great feedback from this ABC podcast, All in the Mind. Give it a listen, if you haven't already! https://www.abc.net.au///facing-fears-and-phobias/10916714

02.01.2022 "The term derives from the Greek words 'thalassa' (sea) and 'phobos' (fear), and can mean different things to different people."
