17.01.2022 IRENE THOMAS ~ REST IN PEACE November 23, 1921 February 21, 2020 After a joyous and active life filled with dance, dance, dance, Miss Irene Thomas passed away... peacefully at home surrounded by her loving caregivers, Jenny and John Lemos on Friday, February 21, 2020. Legendary Lindy Hopper featured in Groovie Movie https://youtu.be/diStBFJO-ls?t=321 My head is now reeling with memories of this tremendous life force that was Irene Thomas of encounters with her over the decades, first through being mesmerized watching her dance in the Hollywood 1940s movies, and then being mesmerized by her in person. So please bear with me while I just open up my memories When I was a fledgling Lindy Hopper in the 1990s, My first dance partner, Simon Selmon, and I would sit on the floor of his London office and watch Groovie Movie and Jive Junction until we practically wore the tape out. Studying the styling of Irene Thomas and Jean Veloz (the two gals who were still alive at that time) little did I know I would become good friends with them. Like every other Lindy Hopper, I was trying to figure out the dance by watching these old clips, and little by little, bits of the stylings were finding their way in. One day, I got THE highest compliment, You remind me of Irene Thomas. I took it great, because she had that sense of fun, the goofy, in her dancing that was certainly one of my big goals. Starting in 2005, Jean Veloz threw me in the car for the first of countless road trips up to visit her old friend, Irene Thomas. I listened to countless hours of reminiscences, laughter, gossip, and, of course, always talk about dance the world they both loved together so much. Hilary Alexander became a constant in these visits, and we were sometimes joined by other super-fans (aren’t we all) such as Kim Clever, Bobby White, Marcus Koch and Bärbl Kaufer. These stories will be blazoned in my mind and heart. When Jean Veloz, Hilary Alexander, and I heard that Irene had been put on hospice, we high-tailed it up to visit her, and when we walked in she threw her arms in the air with a rapturous smile on her face and cried out, Hallelujah! Strike up the band! Here I come! She was indeed ready to go, and joyfully so. My heart grabbed when I watched Jean and Irene talk about how beautiful it is to go when you are ready. These two had been dear friends for over 70 years, and you felt their sweet connection. Lindy Hoppers around the world past and present have idolized and revered Irene Thomas for her tremendous contribution to the dance through her unique styling which was a bit on the zany side and also deceivingly complex. According to Jean Veloz, who was there with her during those golden dance years of the 1940s, Irene created two of the most iconic moves: Switches and The Quick Stop. I want to acknowledge some people here who have done so much for Irene: Jenny Lemos and her family. Jenny was Irene’s caregiver, and when the fires broke out in Ojai, Jenny raced over, collected Irene and invited her to live with her and her family. Jenny and her husband gave up their bedroom, and moved in Irene for the rest of her life. They put Irene’s old photos all around the house, so it really became her house. She got to be in a warm and loving household to the end. Simon Selmon for introducing to me all the wonderful old clips and opening up the storied history and great personalities of this treasured dance. Rob van Haaren for finding Irene in 1990s and bringing her to all of us. Marcus Koch for inviting me to join him on that great road trip to visit Irene with Jean. Tom Koerner and Debra Sternberg for their constant devotion to Irene, bringing Irene out to DC for Groovie Movie weekends over the years, and for bringing her and her caregiver out to DC in 2018. It meant everything to her. Hilary Alexander for taking the great leap to produce our joint venture A Tribute To The Groovie Movie. I’m so glad we did that! It’s been quite a ride knowing Irene Thomas. She was a firecracker, a true force of nature, her own woman, she always said just what was on her mind, and she danced it, too. So perfectly fitting, Irene, in her final moments spit out her dentures, took her last breath, closed her eyes and passed peacefully away. Knowing older people can be the greatest gift of all. Thank you, Irene. Rusty Frank Feburary 26, 2020 P.S. I love all these visit photos from over the years... because the gals (Jean and Irene) would NEVER think of posing for a picture without beveling! #love For those of you unacquainted with Irene’s legacy, here is a wonderful article Bobby White wrote about Irene Thomas: https://swungover.wordpress.com//irene-thomas-sassy-brune/ #love #lindyhoplegends #swinglegends #womenlegends #irenethomas #70yearfriendship
