As a result of their continued combat operations and the search of excellence they have lost some of the finest men this generation has ever seen. Our Commando Regiments continue to fight against those who wish to force their ideology and beliefs on us and they we will always prevail. Never forget those who have made the ultimate sacrifice for this nation. Lest we forget

25.01.2022 Trooper Mark Donaldson, SASR awarded VC On the 2nd of September 2008, Trooper Mark Donaldson participated in a series of heroic actions that would see him awarded Australias highest award for bravery and gallantry in the face of the enemy, the Victoria Cross for Australia. On this day, Trooper Donaldson was patrolling with Afghan and US forces when they were ambushed by a well-prepared and numerically superior Taliban force. Donaldson deliberately exposed himself to enemy... fire in order to draw attention away from casualties, allowing them to move to cover. Whilst the patrol attempted to withdraw, the number of wounded personnel was such that the unwounded personnel, including Trooper Donaldson, were forced to remain outside the vehicles. Whilst retreating, their Afghan interpreter was wounded and was not been loaded into a vehicle. Trooper Donaldson immediately ran across 80m of open ground to the interpreter, and began administering first aid. The patrol eventually broke free of the ambush after two hours. For his actions that day, Trooper Donaldson was awarded the Victoria Cross. He was the first recipient of the Victoria Cross for Australia (previous Victoria Crosses were British), and the first Australian to be awarded the Victoria Cross since Warrant Officer Keith Payne was awarded his in Vietnam 40 years prior.

22.01.2022 #OTD: Warrant Officer Class II Keith Payne, VC On the 24th of May 1969, Warrant Officer Class II Keith Payne heroically rescued 40 wounded men whilst under fir...e during the battle of Ben Hat, Vietnam, whilst serving with the Australian Army Training Team Vietnam. For his bravery that evening he was awarded Australia’s highest award for bravery, the Victoria Cross. He is the last living recipient of the original ‘Imperial’ Victoria Cross. Keith Payne was born at Ingham, Queensland, on 30 August 1933. He attended Ingham State School and afterwards became an apprentice cabinet-maker. During this time he also served with the 31st Australian Infantry Battalion in the Citizens’ Military Force. Seeking greater opportunities, Payne joined the Australian Regular Army in August 1951 and after his basic and initial employment training was posted to the 2nd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (2RAR) in December 1951. Payne was transferred to the 1st Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR) in July 1952 and later that month was sent to Japan as an infantry reinforcement. In September 1952 he was sent to Korea, where he joined his unit. He served with the battalion until they were rotated out of Korea in March 1953, whereupon he was taken on strength of Headquarters, 28th British Commonwealth Brigade. He remained with this formation until the end of the Korean War, and returned to Australia in August 1953. In December 1954 Payne married Florence Plaw, a member of the Women’s Royal Australian Army Corps. He was promoted to corporal the following year and spent much of the next five years attending various courses and schools of instruction to further his army career. In February 1960 Payne was posted to the 3rd Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment (3RAR), then based at Enoggera in Queensland. He was promoted to sergeant in July 1961 and deployed to Malaysia in August 1963. During an operation on the Malay-Thai border in October 1964, Payne was slightly injured when he fell into a river as he was crossing. He remained on duty and returned to Australia with 3RAR in February 1965. Later that month Payne was posted to the 5th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment. However, the posting was only brief, and in June that year he was appointed as an instructor to the Officer Training Unit at Scheyville, New South Wales. In February 1967 he joined the 2nd Pacific Islands Regiment in Papua New Guinea. He was promoted to Warrant Officer Class II in May that year and returned to Brisbane at the conclusion of his posting in March 1968. On 24 February 1969 he was appointed to the Australian Army Training Team in Vietnam. In May that year he was commanding the 212th Company of the 1st Mobile Strike Force Battalion when it was attacked by a strong North Vietnamese force. His company was isolated and, surrounded on three sides, Payne's Vietnamese troops began to fall back. Payne, by now wounded in the hands and arms and under heavy fire, covered the withdrawal before organising his troops into a defensive perimeter. He then spent three hours scouring the scene of the day’s fight for isolated and wounded soldiers, all the while evading enemy troops, who kept up harassing fire. He found some 40 wounded men, brought some in himself and organised for the rescue of the others, leading the party back to base through enemy-dominated terrain. Years later, asked whether he was afraid, Payne replied, "My God yes, yes, I was. Payne’s actions that night earned him the Victoria Cross. He was evacuated to Brisbane in September suffering from an illness, receiving a warm reception at the Brisbane airport before entering hospital. He had recovered by November, and in January 1970 was posted as an instructor to the Royal Military College, Duntroon. Payne received his VC from Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II aboard the Royal Yacht, Britannia in Brisbane on 13 April 1970. He received the Distinguished Service Cross and the Silver Star from the United States, and the Republic of Vietnam awarded him the Cross of Gallantry with Bronze Star. He retired from the army in 1975, but saw further action as a captain with the Army of the Sultan of Oman during the Dhofar War. Payne returned to Australia and became active in the veteran community, particularly in counseling sufferers of post-traumatic stress disorder. A living Aussie legend. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you appreciate this content, please considering 'liking' the page and sharing this post so others can learn about Australia's fascinating military history! 19.01.2022 Sergeant Mathew Locke, MG, SASR, KIA Today we pause to remember the life and service of Sergeant Matthew Locke, MG, SASR who was fatally wounded by small arms fire whilst on patrol in Uruzghan Provice on the 25th of October 2007. Sergeant Matthew Locke enlisted into the Australian Regular Army on the 11 June, 1991. After he completed his Recruit Training at Kapooka, he was allocated to the Royal Australian Infantry Corps and commenced his Initial Employment Training at Single...ton, New South Wales on the 10 September 1991. At the completion of his Initial Employment Training, Matthew was posted to the 5th/7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment. Matthew had a flair for Infantry training and whilst at the 5th/7th Battalion, The Royal Australian Regiment, he completed Driver Courses, Basic Mortar Course, promotion courses and became a Small Arms Coach. It was obvious that Matthew wanted to be challenged as a soldier so in November 1997, Matthew successfully completed the Special Air Service Selection Course. Over the next two years, Matthew completed another 15 specialist courses ranging from patrolling, demolitions, diving, parachuting, and medical. Matthew was posted to the 3rd Special Air Service Squadron. Sergeant Locke was awarded the Medal for Gallantry in December 2006 for gallantry in action in hazardous circumstances as the second-in-command of a Special Air Service Regiment patrol in the Special Forces Task Group whilst deployed on Operation Slipper, Afghanistan, in 2006. With complete disregard for his own safety, Sergeant Locke braved heavy enemy fire to neutralise the Taliban advancing on the Australian position and in doing so saved the lives of his mates. Matthew was killed in action on the 25th of October 2007 during an engagement with Taliban extremists during Operation Spin Ghar. Lest we forget
19.01.2022 Australian Army Special Operations Command Australia military working dog Kuga today was posthumously awarded the Dickin Medal (Victoria Cross for Animals) for ...conspicuous gallantry by British charity the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA). The medal was presented to CPL Mark Donaldson VC at the Australian War Memorial. Kuga was awarded the Dickin Medal for his actions during a Special Operations Task Group patrol in Uruzgan province, Afghanistan. Kuga, who was shot five times during the action, served with the Special Air Service Regiment (SASR) from 2008 until his death from wounds in 2012. If it wasn’t for Kuga’s actions that day in Afghanistan, both Kuga’s handler and the Special Operations Task Group patrol would have walked into the enemy ambush with potentially devastating loss of life. Kuga, a Belgian Malinois breed, is the first Australian dog and first Australian animal since World War II to be awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal. The PDSA Dickin Medal was created in 1943 to honour the work of animals in war and has been awarded to 71 individual animals, including two Australian carrier pigeons in World War II. Kuga is the 71st recipient of the Dickin Medal. Read Kuga’s full citation here https://www.army.gov.au//media-/dickin-medal-citation-kuga
18.01.2022 #OTD: We remember Trooper Jason Brown, SASR Today we pause to remember the life and service of 8255847 Trooper Jason Thomas Brown, SASR, who was killed in a blo...ody gunfight with insurgents on the 13th of August 2010, whilst patrolling in northern Kandahar, Afghanistan. Jason enlisted in the army straight out of high school in 2000 at the age of 19. Initially posted to 1RAR, in 2004 he joined 4RAR (Commando). Continuing to strive for excellence, Jason applied, and was accepted into SASR in 2007 after completing the gruelling selection course. During his time in the army, Jason completed three tours of East Timor between 2001 and 2006. In June 2010, he deployed on his first tour of Afghanistan as part of Operation Slipper. On the 13th of August, his section was ambushed by a machinegun whilst passing a particularly dense thicket of vegetation along a river bank. During the opening engagement, Jason was struck multiple times by numerous rounds in the first seconds of the battle. Despite his teammates best efforts to provide trauma aid and resuscitation, and subsequent aeromedical evacuation to Kandahar, he was pronounced dead on arrival. He was only 29. Trooper Jason Thomas Brown was fondly remembered as your typical Australian bloke. He loved a cold Coopers Pale Ale, he loved a good prank and he loved his family. 03.01.2022 Today is a great day for our Navy, our nation and a young, Australian sailor who paid the highest price to save his shipmates from certain death. I welcome t...he announcement that today, the late Ordinary Seaman Teddy Sheean, will be recognised with the award of a Victoria Cross for Australia. The first for a member of the Royal Australian Navy. There is no higher honour than the Victoria Cross. Teddy Sheeans story of bravery is well known in our Navy and we have long recognised his heroic and gallant actions. This story, this account, is the stuff of legend. Sheeans actions on that day, 1 December 1942, were absolutely amongst the most conspicuous and most gallant weve seen in our Navy. Ordinary Seaman Sheean joined the Royal Australian Navy in 1941 from his hometown of Lower Barrington in Tasmania, when Australia was in the grip of the Second World War. Fresh from recruit school, he trained hard, took his duty seriously and showed loyalty to his mates. In 1942, at only 18 years of age, he was posted to HMAS Armidale as a loader for one of the ships three Oerlikon anti-aircraft guns. He was the youngest member of Armidales Ships Company. Less than six months later, in the vicinity of East Timor, HMAS Armidale came under a coordinated torpedo and bomb attack by enemy aircraft. Listing heavily to port from battle damage, the order was given to abandon ship. As the ship sank, Ordinary Seaman Sheean returned to his Action Station, and was wounded on the way. He strapped himself in to the Oerlikon anti-aircraft gun, potentially giving up any chance of survival, and opened fire at enemy aircraft. As bullets strafed his shipmates, Teddy continued to fire that gun until he himself, went down with the ship. His heroism has become a standard our men and women of our modern Navy aspire to. His spirit of courage, of sacrifice and of service is an enduring part of our Navy, living on through our Fleet and our People. Our Values are borne from the actions of those who have served before us, like Teddy, who in the face of adversity, showed service, courage, respect, integrity and excellence. I cannot understate the esteem in which he is held by our Navy People, past and present. HMAS Sheean, a Collins Class Submarine, is the first and only ship in the Royal Australian Navy to bear the name of an Ordinary Seaman. More than 500 of our submariners have proudly worn his name on their cap tally band over the last 20 years, and at least another 500 will do so in the years ahead. This is a proud moment for Teddy Sheeans Family, who have fought for many decades for this outcome, and I congratulate them on their perseverance, and todays announcement. This award, the Victoria Cross for Australia, is a great honour for the late Teddy Sheean, for his Shipmates, for his Family, for the Royal Australian Navy, for the Australian Defence Force, and for our Nation.

Today, we pause to remember the life and service of Lance Corporal Stjepan Milosevic, Sapper James Martin, and Private Robert Poate who were killed that day. All three soldiers were killed when Afghan National Army Sergeant Hekmatullah opened fire on a group of Australian soldiers from a distance of less than five metres.
