11.01.2022 Manufacturing Creativity. . The project links Vietnamese artists with the manufacturing industry through a series of artists-in-residencies in and around Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. . The aims of this research are to discover new opportunities and roles for contemporary artists in society. By reframing the creative practitioner as cultural diplomats or soft power influencer in society the project can raise the value of the artist in society. The project aims to build more sus...tainable creative practice opportunities for Vietnamese artists and designers. Important social questions are asked such as how creative exemplars in manufacturing can improve worker-wellbeing and raise rates of innovation in these communities. . "We challenge creative practitioners to be more efficient and consistent re-users of waste from manufacturing, so that we can reduce the environmental impact of growing material feedstocks. Using the qualitative data from this research we can understand how these collaborations operate most effectively. We are planning a longitudinal study that can enable us to ensure replication of situated collaborations in Vietnam and beyond". Dr Jane Gavan - project leader See more

08.01.2022 Welcome Duc from Vietnam! Duc and his former PhD advisor, A/Prof Tiho Ancev are working on a project titled "Valuation of forest ecosystems services in North Western Vietnam for improved Rural and Regional Development". . Vietnam is on the global forefront when it comes to the use of incentive based mechanisms for recognising the value of forest ecosystem services through its Payments for Forest Ecosystem Services (PEFES) programs. The objective of the project is to estimate ...the values derived from critical ecosystem services provided by forests in North West Vietnam. The results from this project will provide critical knowledge on the values of forest ecosystem services, which is essential for improving existing policies for forest management and for rural and regional development of one of the least developed regions in Vietnam. . The time that Duc is spending in Sydney is critical for completing the research project. Working closely with Tiho, the pair are shaping the theoretical foundations and analytical frameworks in this field of research. They are also finding a manuscript on evaluating the existing payment for forest ecosystem services program in Vietnam that is planned to be published next year. See more

07.01.2022 A promising alternative to pesticides and soil fumigation for coffee production in Vietnam. Photo credit: Rodrigo Flores . . A current study by PhD student Mr Khoi Le and Professor David Guest has promising findings in the production of coffee in Vietnam. The study titled "organic soil amendments a promising mean for managing coffee lesion nematode Pratylenchus coffeae" had demonstrated an effective alternative to soil fumigations and pesticides.... . The coffee production in Vietnam is limited by plant parasitic nematodes root lesion (Pratylenchus spp.) Approximately 1,000 hectares of Robusta coffee were destroyed by Pratylenchus spp. in the Central Highlands in Vietnam. The current nematode control strategies rely heavily on pesticides and soil fumigations, which are associated with poor environmental outcomes. . Organic soil amend e fa were investigated toxo tell nematode damage of P. coffeae. The organic amendments were found to enhanced soil microbe activity, nematode trapping fungi, the numbers of free-living nematodes and the predictors mononchid nematodes. The use of Lucerne-hay and Sugarcane-trash amendments were found to improve biological health, coffee grown and nematode damage for up to 12 months.the study showed organic soil amendments might be suitable or agricultural on other countries such as Australia. The findings are scheduled for submission Feb 2020 See more
