24.01.2022 Have you ever wanted to learn some rahvatants but live too far away from a dance group? Or did you do rahvatants many years ago but havent had the chance to dance for a while? Well Sydney Virmalised has the answer for you! This Monday (11th May) at 7:30pm, Sydney Virmalised are having our weekly dance rehearsal online via Zoom. Were calling everyone and anyone who is interested in learning a bit of rahvatants to join us on Monday. No prior dancing experience necessary, j...ust enthusiasm, willingness to learn and 1.5m of personal space :) Well be starting the session with a bit of yoga (jooga) to destress and clear our minds. This will be followed by practicing some basic steps and learning some pro tips on how to make your dancing look effortless. We acknowledge that the Gadigal people have always nurtured, and continue to nurture, this land. We would like to pay our respects to the Elders past, present and emerging of the Eora Nation. ...This week commemorates the successful 1967 referendum and the High Court Mabo decision, two meaningful steps in the reconciliation journey. The theme for NRW 2020 is In this Together. This reminds us that through reconciliation, we are all in this together. NRW is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements. It is a time for us to create lasting, respectful relationships and communities that value Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, cultures, histories and futures. Drawn in a singular stroke, the motif is adorned upon many traditional garments not only within the Baltic region but throughout the world. Accompanying the geometric motif are the spectacular colours of Virmalised (Northern Lights/Aurora Borealis). In Estonia, explanations for this phenomena include the light...s as magnificent horse-drawn carriages carrying heavenly guests to a spectacular celestial wedding, other stories include humpback whales playing games with their scales reflected into the night sky. The colours represent the multi-faceted nature of our community in Sydney and the merging of both traditional and contemporary folk dancing. Bordering the star, four dancers from North, East, South and West form a sõpruse ring (friendship circle) symbolising the interconnected bond we have with each other as we end each practice and performance.
