22.01.2022 PHARMACY FACT FRIDAY COUGHS Coughing is a normal reflex to protect and clean our airways. Coughing clears the irritating material and excess secretions from our throat, air passages and lungs.... Causes of cough include: - Post nasal drip - Asthma - Respiratory tract infection - Inhaled irritants Types of cough. By describing your cough, you can help a doctor or pharmacist to choose the best treatment for you. - Wet cough: a wet cough brings up mucus. Your chest may feel tight or have a rattle, and you may feel congested and breathless. The colour, smell and appearance of the mucus is an important clue in determining the cause. - Dry cough: a dry cough does not bring up mucus. It is often triggered by a tickle or irritation in your throat. It can sound like a bark. Your chest does not feel or sound congested. Treatments For a wet cough: - Mucolytics (e.g. bromhexine) or Expectorants (e.g. guauphenesin, senega, ammonia) can thin and loosen the mucus, making the mucus easier to cough up. For a dry cough: - Cough suppressant (e.g. pholcodine, dextromethorphan) can suppress/stop the cough and help relieve it. Cough suppressants are not suitable for a wet cough, or a cough caused by asthma or airway disease. When to see a doctor: - If you are coughing up blood or green, yellow, brown or rust coloured mucus. - You are wheezy, short of breath or have chest pain or pain when breathing. - It lasts more than three weeks (or one week for a child) or regularly returns.

18.01.2022 PHARMACY FACT FRIDAY . INFANT COLIC . All babies cry some of the time, but a baby with colic cries much more. Caring for a baby with colic can be stressful, but it usually stops around three (3) months with no long term effects.... . . What causes colic? There is no know cause of infant colic, but theories include: - Pain due to intestinal spasms or wind. - Pain due to reflux. - Food sensitivites or allergies. - Smoking (there is some evidence that woman who smoke are more likely to have a baby with colic) . . Signs and symptoms A baby with colic may fuss and cry intensely for some hours. The crying usually begins suddemly at about the same time everyday, often in the late afternoon/evening. . The baby may pull up it's knees or stretch it's legs out stiffly, clench it's fists and scream, as if in pain. Usually methods of calming won't seem to comfort the baby. . Colic usually starts within three (3) weeks of birth and lasts untill three (3) months of age. . . How to treat it. Parents may need to try different approaches to find out what makes a difference to their baby. . Relieve the wind. Babies may swallow air when they cry or feed. Air may be swallowed during feeding because milk flow is too fast or too slow, or baby is sucking on an empty bottle or breat. Burp the baby after feed can reduce the wind. Medication such as simethicone helps gas bubbles in the stomach escape more easily. . Relax and calm baby - Cuddle and comfort baby - Wrapping or swaddling - A pacifier - Movement such as rocking, patting or riding in the pram. - Warm bath - Gentle massage of stomach and shoulders. . Take care of yourself. - Be patient. Colic usually stops around 3 months. - Prepare for evening colic. - Make feeding time quiet and relaxed. . . When to see a doctor: - Woken up over and over in the night, with screaming not related to feeding. - Sever, long lasting swelling of the belly. . If you feel frustrated, maybe even to the point of shaking the baby, put the baby down in the cot and leave the room. NEVER SHAKE A BABY See more
