21.01.2022 Scammers at it again :( :( :(

21.01.2022 SAPOL's Electronic Crime Section has received a number of reports directly from the public and also via ACORN (Australian Cybercrime Online Reporting Network) r...elating to ransomware. Ransomware is a type of malicious software that restricts access to the computer system it infects and demands a ransom paid in order for the restriction to be removed. Some forms of ransomware encrypt files on the system's hard drive. From the reports that have been received two types of attacks are currently being experienced. The first and more common of the attacks involves the victim receiving an email with an attachment which, when opened, encrypts any devices that the infected machine has access to. This type of attack has affected individual users and both large and small business. For those business with backups that are not currently connected recovery is simple with the only loss being that data which had not been backed up in the interim period. For those who do not have backups recovery at this stage is not possible and all data will be lost unless payment is made to the criminal entities. The second type of attack is made via compromised websites where malicious software or links to it has been installed on the site. The result is the same. If you receive an email with an attachment consider whether this has come from someone you know and if you expected to receive it. In the event the email is from an unknown person or company, we would urge you to delete it. If the email is from a person/company you know but is not expected, contact them to ensure the communication is legitimate before opening the email or attachments. If you operate a website for yourself or your company ensure your site has all vulnerabilities patched and security maintained. If you pay someone to manage your site ask them to ensure these patches and security are in place and up to date. If you have paid for a site to be created but are not paying any ongoing fees for maintenance it is likely your site is vulnerable to this type of intrusion or attack. In the event you are a victim of this crime type we would encourage you to report the crime via ACORN at www.acorn.gov.au
