17.01.2022 The picture below shows the most obvious difference between petrel wheat & normal wheat heads. What makes petrel wheat (the one on the right) better for hay is the absence of the 'beard' (or spikey part) - particularly for horses as the beard can sometimes cause issues. Petrel is also cut prior to the head filling with seed, avoiding grain overload. The same applies to barley. If feeding horses, look for awnless (beardless) varieties.

Petrel wheat is a beardless variety of wheaten hay, with minimal to no grain in the head. It is high in quality, smells beautiful and is well liked by horses and cattle. $10 per bale.... 04.01.2022 Hi all, It’s been a long time between drinks here, with not a lot of rain, meaning not a lot of hay. We are not alone though, dryness means hay is in high demand and the prices even higher. We did manage to get around 300 sorghum rounds wrapped but was sold before we finished bailing. We haven’t been able to plant a winter crop and will be aiming for a summer crop again. Hope you are all able to find hay at reasonable prices and pray especially that rain finds us very soon.
