13.01.2022 Christmas lunch report from Mike Frost. Now, that was my sort of Christmas lunch _ great food, delicious wines and I didnt have to do any cooking or organising. Queensland Wine Press Club treasurer Valmae Richardson organised the kitchen and serving team at Sylvias Restaurant to produce a wonderful meal and Dave and Di Palmer of Skillogalee Wines in the Clare Valley supplied excellent wines to match for the clubs November (Christmas) lunch.... Members and guests on arrival enjoyed a glass or two of sparkling Riesling, an uncommon wine in Australia where most bubblies are made from chardonnay, pinot noir and pinot meunier or a combination of the classic French varieties. Skillogalee have been making the sparkling Riesling for some time and it proved to be a tasty starter, with classic floral and lime varietal characters allied with lovely bubbles and a fresh, crisp finish. The entrees, served as alternate drops, were local king prawn and avocado tian with micro-herbs, Christmas cocktail sauce and a lavosh crisp or pork belly terrine with quince paste, watercress salad and Turkish toast, accompanied by 2018 Skillogalee Riesling and 2018 Rose, a classic Clare Valley blend of cabernet sauvignon and malbec that was closer to a light dry red than most peoples idea of a delicate rose. The mains, again served alternately, were roast noisette of pork loin with apricot and Armagnac stuffing, baked apple, potato dauphinoise, green beans in prosciutto and cider glaze and turkey breast stuffed with walnut and cranberry, Christmas carrots pomme Anna and broccolini with festive demi-glaze. Alongside those were a 2016 Skillogalee The Cabernets and 2016, Skillogalee Shiraz, two excellent Clare reds, with the former being based on cabernet sauvignon with a decent helping of cabernet franc and a splash of malbec. To finish was a dish described as Christmas Surprise, which looked like a spherical lamington but which contained a chocolate-based ice cream, served with Skillogalees 2016 Harvest Gold cane-cut riesling. Im now dreading my family Christmas gathering where I will have go organise and cook some of the food and supply the wines!! PS: The next QWPC function is Presidents Drinks at Customs House on Wednesday December 18 from 5.30pm-7.30pm, with a reminder that it is members only and at no cost to members.
