25.01.2022 Stripping back of an old beach shack at Fingal has highlighted opportunities to come forth...playing with exposed structures with the original timber framing and viewing portals like the one you see here showing a view from the verandah into the new living room.... . . . .... . . . #architecture #renovation #timber #timberframe #exposedtimber #beachshack See more
25.01.2022 The Highlands connection road retaining wall, one of my favourite engineering structures. Built from concrete ballast blocks (using waste concrete), stacked up like kids blocks, and held together by gravity. The horizontal joint lines mark 1 metre high contours and the vertical joints create spaces for plants to grow. The modular blocks allow flowing curves that work with the land. It could also be disassembled easily if necessary. #engineering #ecovillage #designfordissassembly #salvagedmaterials #buildingwithwaste

24.01.2022 This arrived in the post today, hot off the press, the Urban Oasis book by @rebeccalgross starring the courtyard of Diesel’s House and featuring the wonderful @livingchandeliers by @wernickslandscape , we’re very excited to be included in this publication with such esteemed company #courtyarddesign #courtyardhouse #architecture #goldcoast #subtropicaldesign #climateresponsivedesign #courtyardgarden @ Miami, Queensland
22.01.2022 Thinking of building a new home, renovating and existing one, or just understanding more about good design. Then this workshop on Saturday is for you.

21.01.2022 We’re very excited to have a new house underway at the Ecovillage at Currumbin. Pulling out a few bigger concepts that play with a breezeway and courtyards that connect indoors with outdoors (with indoors again) in informal ways, creating a diverse range of places to occupy at different times of day and seasons, and views within and without. Lots of fun things going on including the point where the cantilevered loft almost reaches the bathroom box in the tall breezeway, creat...ing an effect like walking through rock formations in a canyon. Everything designed to work in this climate without AC required of course. With @kirra.keating on drawings and Joel @crownandbole and @kierantreby on the tools for Trebybuild #architecture #goldcoastarchitecture #ecovillage #theecovillageatcurrumbin #ecoarchitect #breezewayhouse #courtyardhouse #sustainabledesign
21.01.2022 When we were designing our house there was always the idea of a club house that was kids only. That became the treehouse which is an outdoor extension of the indoor loft accessed through a kid sized hatch. The treehouse is a bit like a birds nest tucked up in the height of the Garage-Mahal and it’s just right for a camp out. ps grownups also like it. #architecture #eco204 #ecovillageatcurrumbin #architectureforkids #goldcoastarchitecture
20.01.2022 New site sign on our new site at #theecovillageatcurrumbin I got sick of site signs being plastic, vinyl or new aluminium. This one uses salvaged plywood and decking boards from a previous build. Blowtorch stencil. Now just have to work out how to make the house zero plastic as well...... #salvagedmaterials #upcycling #ecovillage #plasticfree #noplastic #ecosignage

18.01.2022 Education garden concept image showing gardens, fire pit/yarning circle, outdoor classroom/workshop/kitchen. This is a dream project for us, one that facilitates a range of uses including community gathering space, outdoor classrooms, bush tucker trails; the primary use being to give kids the opportunity to be hands on with growing, preparing and cooking food (bush tucker as well as introduced food species). Envisaged as a barn raising style build process incorporating help in assembly by community and others (architecture, design, landscape and building students will also be invited once we have the go ahead. You too @five_mile_radius ). #foodgarden #educationgarden #bushtucker #bushtuckergarden #pavilion #architecture
18.01.2022 A pair of classic Gold Coast beachfront holiday houses at Currumbin. Probably circa 1950’s. Neighbours are the newer breed of beach palazzo probably circa 1980’s/1990’s. It’s interesting to see how the older houses built with thrift of money and resources somehow are more generous in spirit than their far larger and more expensive neighbours. Time to wind back the clock I think... #beachhouse #beachhousearchitecture #goldcoastarchitecture #architecture #goldcoast #currumbinbeach #beachshack @ Currumbin, Queensland, Australia
18.01.2022 The Global Climate Strike is today! If you’ve ever had a concern about the environment and where it’s headed then today is the day to make it known. If you’re on the Gold Coast head to Victoria Park at Broadbeach to start proceedings at 12pm. #architectsdeclare_au #architectsdeclare #climateemergency

16.01.2022 Light effect (aka laser beam) caused by the early morning sun coming through the bedroom window and slicing through the small gap between the door panels. The door was made of offcuts of ply left over from our build and recycled hardwood gathered years ago. Assembled using 40mm galv. screws it is a single ply skin and exposed frame. The door is the linen cupboard door during the day and bedroom door at night. We are not guru woodworkers this is just a fun design challenge #recycledmaterials #recycledtimber #upcycledfurniture #architecture #goldcoast #zerowaste #skipraider #ecovillage @ Currumbin Valley, Queensland
16.01.2022 Dove Lake boatshed. One of the most photogenic buildings in the country. 15.01.2022 Entry sequence into the old Methodist church in Boonah, our home away from home last weekend. Truly magical. Check out the curved VJ board ceiling I’ve never seen it’s like before, it was like being under the hull of a ship. Beautiful light through the stained glass windows. Chock full of artworks, vintage stuff and fun stuff. There were so many little delights to discover we had trouble prying the kids out of the place. You can find it on AirBNB #churcharchitecture #timberchurch #architecture #heritagearchitecture #scenicrim #boonah @ Boonah, Queensland

12.01.2022 We’re super excited about this little cottage reno/addition at Fingal. Stripping back the layers of dodgy 70’s add ons to the original single skin VJ and rail frame. Adding on a new entry pavilion making a micro courtyard outside the bathroom and a new tiny lookout deck with views to Springbrook and Mt Warning. #architecture #beachshack #timberandtin #northernriversarchitecture #northcoast #fingalhead #architect #sustainablearchitecture

06.01.2022 A bird’s nest bed loft up in the truss chords to grab a bit more bed space in a 2150 wide guest room. A bit of a tall order but I think it might just work. The platform is pulled away from both end walls to allow air to circulate around the platform from below and vent outside a high window to each side. The bed head is a batten screen acting as a railing and letting air flow through. A fun addition to our Fingal cottage reno/addition. #architecture #northernriversarchitecture #bedloft #naturalventilation #passivedesignstrategies #beachshack
04.01.2022 Sketching cabins using the fat charcoal pencil for the loose concept idea stage. Compact cabins of rough hardwood and corro that can age well, make the most of the seasons in our subtropical climate, resist bushfire, and have their own distinct personality (rather than a generic eco tent) #cabin #cabinarchitecture #subtropicaldesign #architecture #goldcoastarchitecture #tweedcoast #ecocabin #sustainabledesign

04.01.2022 Rain on the new (recycled) awning over the entry deck on the weekend. This roof is too small to need a gutter and it’s lovely to have the mini-waterfall off the edge #eco204 #timberandtin #ecoarchitecture #architecture #goldcoast #ecovillageatcurrumbin

01.01.2022 We’ve been a bit flat out and this is one of the things we’ve been busy with, a new house at The Ecovillage at Currumbin. A house that draws from the fun and informality of a 1960’s beach house with some agricultural detailing and materials thrown in. All indoor spaces and courtyards hang off and are connected by a greenhouse/breezeway that defines the project. Render by our new team member, the immensely talented @kirra.keating #ecohouse #ecovillage #architecture #goldcoast #ruralarchitecture #passivesolardesign #courtyardhouse #breezeway #breezewayhouse #echidnasinarchitecture
