25.01.2022 "They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them."

25.01.2022 Dont Brush Where You Flush Where you store your toothbrush in your bathroom is important. In most bathrooms, the toilet is very close to the sink, where most people keep their toothbrushes. Every time you flush, bacteria are released into the air and you dont want that bacteria to get on your toothbrush.

25.01.2022 Where to watch out for hidden sugars? Soft drinks, baked goods, lollies, flavoured milks and desserts can all have high amounts of sugar. Also keep an eye on the sugar added to foods you might not think of as sweet, like: sauces, including condiments, stir fry sauces, pizza and pasta sauces salad dressings... bread yoghurts mueslis and cereals alcoholic drinks iced tea and protein bars. 22.01.2022 Fissure Sealants Sealants are a fast and easy way of protecting your teeth that act as barriers to cavity-prone areas. They are usually applied to the chewing surfaces of back teeth and sometimes used to cover deep pits and grooves. Sealing a tooth is fast and there is virtually no discomfort. As long as the sealant remains intact, the tooth surface will be protected from decay. Sealants hold up well under the force of normal chewing but may have to be reapplied if needed. Bo...th primary and permanent teeth can benefit from sealants. What are they? A fissure sealant is a thin protective material that coats the outer surface of a tooth that protects the tooth from further damage. The purpose of this is to ensure that plaque and excess bacteria cannot build up within the fissures of your teeth that are difficult to clean during regular brushing and flossing. Who are they for? Fissure sealants are recommended for both children and adults; this depends on the individuals risk of decay. Fissure sealants have been shown to reduce the probability of tooth decay in molars by 80%. How are they applied? Applying fissure sealants is a quick and painless process. Prior to applying the sealant, the tooth will be cleaned. The procedure then involves applying a tiny amount of acidic adhesive, in order to create a bond between the tooth and the sealant material. Once the sealant material is applied, we set this by using a curing light, thereby completing the process.

19.01.2022 Braces & Oral Hygiene Braces can allow for food and plaque build-up between brackets and under wires easily, so its important to maintain a proper oral hygiene routine during treatment. Its essential to remove plaque from your teeth at least two times daily. The brackets and wires create places for plaque to hide and when bacteria-laden plaque attaches to braces and teeth, it can cause cavities, swollen gums, bad breath, and permanent stain marks on your teeth. ... If possible, you should brush your teeth after eating. If you are unable to brush with a toothbrush, then rinse your mouth out with water. It is important to continue your regular dental exams and cleans every six months or more often if recommended How to Brush Teeth with Braces Brushing teeth with braces isnt too different than brushing without braces. Its still necessary to brush twice a day for at least two minutes. When youre ready to brush, start by brushing at the gumline at a 45-degree angle. After brushing the gumline, place the toothbrush on top of the brackets, angling down to brush on top of each bracket. Then, reposition the toothbrush to brush the bottom of the bracket and the wire, angling the toothbrush up. Go slowly. Make sure to brush every tooth at the gumline as well as above and below the brackets. The wires that connect braces from tooth to tooth makes flossing a challenge, but patience and using the correct floss can help greatly. A floss threader is a tool that allows dental floss to clean underneath the arch wires easily. Super floss and interdental brushes may also be recommended. Your dental practitioner can show you how to use these tools to ensure youre keeping teeth and gums as clean as possible. You should replace your toothbrush every 3 months, or sooner if the brackets seem to make bristles wear down faster than usual.

13.01.2022 5 bad brushing habits to break in 2020 Keeping Your Toothbrush for Too Long We recommend changing your toothbrush every 3-4 months, so make a resolution to change your toothbrush with every season this year. Frayed and broken bristles wont keep your teeth cleanthese are signs its time to let go.... Not Brushing Long Enough Speedsters SLOW DOWN!! Your teeth should be brushed for two minutes, twice daily. The average time most people spend brushing is 45 seconds. If youre sprinting through cleaning, try setting a timer. Brushing Too Hard You may think the harder you brush the better, but a gentle brushing is all thats needed. Too much pressure may damage your gums and teeth. Be mindful to be gentle, especially where your gums and teeth meet, as you brush. Brushing Right after Eating If you have had something acidic like lemons, grapefruit or soft drink, wait at least 60 minutes before brushingDrink water or chew sugar-free gum to help while you are waiting to brush. Using a Brush with Hard Bristles A soft-bristled toothbrush is a safe bet. Depending on how vigorously you brush your teeth and the strength of your teeth, medium and hard bristled brushes could actually damage the gums, root surface, and protective tooth enamel.

12.01.2022 Time to take a closer look at your supermarket purchases. Theyre not as healthy as you might think.

11.01.2022 That is the question that is being asked as part of this years Dental Week from August 3-9. Sugar is hidden in many foods on our supermarket shelves and goes by more than 50 different names, sugar can be hard to detect, causing devastating impacts on our oral health.

11.01.2022 Hiding in plain sight You might think that a little extra sugar here and there isnt such a big deal, but the odds are that you are taking in far more than you realise. Figures show that the average Australian is consuming 14 teaspoons of sugar a day, a whole lot more than the maximum six teaspoons a day recommended by the World Health Organisation for increased health benefits such as decreasing the risk of tooth decay, which is having a profoundly negative effect on Australias dental health as revealed by Australias Oral Health Tracker (ada.org.au/oralhealthtracker

Then, after I close my sleepy eyes the tooth fairy will come and leave a surprise!

04.01.2022 Brushing We recommend brushing for at least two minutes twice a day, taking care to use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your teeth systematically along all surfaces, always brushing in small, circular motions. Flossing Flossing (or using an interdental brush) once a day is important because it removes plaque from between your teeth which goes a long way in helping to prevent gum disease, tooth decay and halitosis ("bad breath"). Its not something that should be rushed e...ither. Take your time, using a gentle side-to-side motion with about 45cm wound around your middle fingers and thumb. If youre not sure about the right technique, come and have a chat to us and we can show you all the right flossing moves. Say "Hello!" To Symmetry Dental It is recommended to be seeing a dental practitioner every 6 to 12 months or as needed to keep on top of your dental health. Eat and drink well Beyond limiting the sugar you eat, we recommend drinking more tap water, avoid snacking between meals, instead sticking to three meals a day and concentrating on the good stuff like vegetables and dairy products. Of course, before you make any major dietary changes, first check with a healthcare professional.

03.01.2022 Dental Emergencies At Symmetry we reserve time in our schedules to help with emergencies. Call on 6295 3006 for an appointment. 1. Chipped or Broken Tooth Teeth can break or chip-out when hard food is chewed or in accidents. In this case, the person should wash their mouth with lukewarm water to keep the area clean. The use of a cold compress or ice pack to reduce swelling is preferred. But visiting the surgery as soon as possible for opinion is recommended. The damage may lo...ok small from the outside, but there may be underlying issues present. 2. Knocked-Out Tooth Firstly, see if you can retrieve the fallen tooth. Do not rinse/ wash the tooth with water. Immerse it in milk or saliva to keep it moist. Hold the tooth from the crown end and not the roots. Keeping the tooth germ-free can avoid any infections to other teeth and increase the chances of being reinserted again. 3. Toothaches There are many conditions that lead to a toothache. The first remedy in most cases is to rinse and clean mouth and remove any leftover food particles between the teeth. After the cleaning, pain removal medicines like aspirin should not be placed directly on the aching tooth. You can ask your pharmacy for any over-the-counter pain relief medication. Schedule an appointment if the pain continues or worsens even after the medication. 4. Tooth or Gum Abscess Abscesses are the collection of pus that occurs due to infection. They mostly occur after one or two days of infection. If not treated, abscesses can damage adjacent teeth and gums. They are extremely painful in most cases and can lead to chills, fever, nausea, and vomiting. Such cases should be treated as soon as possible. 5. Broken/lost appliances If your appliance breaks or is lost call the surgery immediately. Do not attempt to fix the appliance. *Please inform reception if you are unable to wear your appliance, regression in treatment may occur if appliance is not worn as instructed. We will have to repair or remake your appliance as soon as possible in order to continue making progress with treatment.

01.01.2022 Electric toothbrush Vs manual toothbrush Which toothbrush should I use? Studies have shown that electric toothbrushes reduce plaque and gingivitis more than manual toothbrushes in the short and long term. However a manual toothbrush is still effective if used correctly and can be a better option in some cases for example: individuals that experience sensory issues. When children first start being responsible for brushing their own teeth, a manual toothbrush can be a better op...tion. They are lighter and easier for a child to control and at this age it helps with gaining manual dexterity. As children get older an electric toothbrush designed especially for children might be a more suitable option. Not only can it be easier for them to handle and manoeuvre, but some electric toothbrushes time their brushing and can encourage good oral hygiene behaviours. Furthermore, some children enjoy using an electric toothbrush much more, which makes the ritual more engaging for them. In summary, both standard and electric toothbrushes can be used effectively to keep your mouth clean and your teeth healthy. The key is to brush and floss every day, regardless of the kind of brush you prefer. Both types of toothbrushes have their advantages but both types will get the job done as far as removing plaque, if used correctly. With both electric and manual toothbrushes, you should look to change your toothbrush or brush head every three months. If youre currently undergoing orthodontic treatment, youll need to change your toothbrush more regularly, around every six to eight weeks.
