25.01.2022 With all of this beautiful spring grass coming through all over the country, let’s talk about how it affects our horses gut bacteria, namely how it can cause endotoxaemia! While grass is the perfect food for a lot of horses, for some coming off hay, or with sudden flushes of grass, it can be a risk. When there is high rainfall with lots of sun as we’re having now, the grass’s sugar increases. This sugar has the ability to shock the GIT by decreasing the pH! This can caus...e massive amounts of bacterial death. This is particularly important for gram negative bacteria. While alive, gram negatives live as commensals and can support normal gut function. When these special bacteria are killed however, they release their toxins, known as endotoxins! These toxins have negative effects all over the body, effects that we often don’t see for several days after the initial insult. The most notable being laminitis! These toxins act to reduce blood flow to the lamina and stimulate an inflammatory response which can ultimately result in ‘founder’. Keep this in mind, as it means your horse does not have to be fat to founder. Sudden changes in diet particularly on spring grass can be all it takes. Protect your horse by monitoring their grass intake, and allowing for a slow transition from hay to pasture.
