05.01.2022 Here at Synergy Health Centre, our dietitians at Compleat Nutrition see a large range of clients ranging from general weight loss to specific inflammatory bowel diseases. Another type of client they often see is bariatric clients looking to undergo surgery to aid in their weight loss journey. It is recommended to complete exercise both before and after surgery, but what and why? Within the pre-operative stage, weight loss should be a primary goal of your exercise program as ...excess fat can make the operation itself more challenging. In fact, most surgeons require that their patient lose a certain amount of weight before they will operate to help reduce the difficulty of the operation and also see that the patient is serious about this course of action. Showing they are willing to make the necessary changes within their lifestyle. Moving forward into the post-operative stage, exercise focused towards weight loss should be continued being mindful of the incision site and at first beginning with flexibility exercises, deep breathing, and getting back to everyday activities. From there, gradual introduction of low-intensity aerobic exercises and eventually safe strengthening exercises should be undertaken. Ensuring exercise and healthy lifestyle habits are continued past this stage is imperative to ensure the desired goal of weight loss.
