17.01.2022 "RETURNED" EMAILS THAT YOU DIDN'T SEND I have a friend who keeps on getting emails "returned" as undeliverable, but she never sent them in the first place. She has a new computer, and she has also changed her password, but those "returned" emails keep coming. The chances of them coming from her computer, or somebody else having her password, are near zero, so I have been looking elsewhere but without success. This is one of those issues that might never get resolved, but I am going to keep plugging away at it. I will let you know if I find anything.

17.01.2022 HOW OLD IS YOUR COMPUTER? I have just finished a job for a client who thought her dying laptop computer was "less than two years old" (her words). As I was recovering here data, I saw files with dates that were eight years ago, and parts of the hardware were from a year before that. I mentioned this her and her husband happened to overhear it. He stated that it was eight years old. While many people tend to underestimate the age of their computer, I had never come across such a big mistake before. For the record, the typical life expectancy of a laptop computer in a commercial environment is two years, and three years in a domestic environment. Her laptop had reached the stage of being a "venerable heirloom".

12.01.2022 THUMB DRIVES Thumb drives are small, light and very convenient. They are wonderful for transferring files from home to work and back again, or perhaps to friends that you might visit. But thumb drives are inherently unreliable. They are also easily lost.... If you want to backup your data, use an external hard drive instead. While they are more expensive individually, they hold *much* more data, and the cost expressed in terms of cents per megabyte is much lower.

11.01.2022 THE COST OF USING OLD SOFTWARE If you are running a business and using software that costs to upgrade, it can be tempting to skip the upgrades and avoid the cost. This can be a bad idea, and could end up costing a lot more in the long run. Old software relies on old operating system which can only run on old computers. The problem with computer hardware is that stops running, and cannot be replaced. Production runs of things like mainboards are typically 12 months, so if you ...want to replace it after five years you will be out of luck. When things do finally go wrong the impact of the business can be severe. Tills can stop working. Creditors don't get paid. Transactions get lost. Staff can become exhausted working with unfamiliar manual systems. The cost of calling in an IT expert to try to recover the data and send out invoices can far outweigh the savings of not upgrading. If you are still tempted to not upgrade, think again, and again, and again.

07.01.2022 PRINT YOUR RECEIPTS If you ever use the Internet to do things like Internet banking on shopping online, it's a good idea to print the receipt for every transaction. If you just save them on your computer, then they are at risk from your computer dying. If you have a printed copy as well, then that will last for years!

05.01.2022 CHOOSE YOUR PASSWORD WITH CARE! This is a follow up from my previous entry about returned email that was never sent in the first place. It seems that the victim was the subject of a "dictionary attack": https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dictionary_attack . The victim's password was along the lines of "88wombat", and it takes less than a day for an automated system to "break" such a password, even it is later changed to something else like "76horses". Using just two digits and a w...ord from the dictionary is like closing your front door and forgetting to lock it. The victim now has a password that is 11 characters long, and includes six digits. It would take millions of years to break it, and the automated systems will go for other email users instead. While it is not perfect, using the name of a family member (include your pets!) and the date of an anniversary is a good starting point.
