25.01.2022 BREAKING: Controversial MP Billy Gordon has announced that he won't be contesting next month's state election. Mr Gordon said it had been "a great privilege and honour" to represent the Cook electorate. "There have been many great things achieved over the last three years that I am extremely proud of," he said. "Fighting for cane farmers to have a greater say in selling their sugar cane was history making. "Advocating for greater community control of primary health care in C...ape York and supporting our agricultural industry on the Cape by listening to their voices when it came to the proposed state government vegetation management policy are amongst some of my significant work." Mr Gordon said in the lead up to the 2015 State Election "I stood up for the rights and conditions of working class people and their families". Mr Gordon today announced that he would be endorsing Cynthia Lui on November 25, and encouraged his supporters, family and friends "to do so as well". "As an indigenous Australian I am excited at the prospect of having for the very first time a Torres Strait Islander elected to the Queensland Legislative Assembly. "I wish Ms Lui all the best over the next few weeks and can only imagine what her Election to the Queensland Parliament will mean for Torres Strait Islanders all around Australia. "It is only under a Labor government that we can still keep our income generating assets in public hands and it is only under a Palaszczuk led government that the rights and conditions of hard working women, men and their families will be protected," he said. "A vote for One Nation or the LNP on November 25 is a vote for an unholy alliance that trades in fear, ignorance and hate. "Only Annastacia Palaszczuk has the courage, belief and vision needed to lead this great state into the next term of government." Mr Gordon also thanked his supporters, staff, friends and family for their support. PICTURE: Tablelands Advertiser
