09.01.2022 Optical dispensing moving forward. A recent forum was held at O=MEGA19 where the future of optical dispensing and its national optical dispensing organisation Australian Dispensing Opticians Association (ADOA) was discussed. Members of the industry wanted to see optical dispensing to gain more respect and retain its professional status within the optical industry. They wanted to ensure that current education standards be maintained and improved across Australia.... The forum chaired by Paul Clarke, a former ADOA president, and past president to the International Opticians Association (IOA). He presented findings of a survey conducted in the eye care sector. The survey showed the vast majority of people wanted to be part of ADOA and wanted to participate in continuing education. They also wanted the association to become more professional and to help raise the image of optical dispensing. Optometry Australia (OA) president, Darrell Baker said that optometry was keen to assist optical dispensing and ADOA in their pursuit of this improvement. He said that both professions need each other as optometry cannot do without dispensing and dispensing cannot do without optometry. He said that OA has offered to assist ADOA to grow by providing management resources, data and assistance where possible. On the education front Philip Rose from the Eyecare Plus group said attracting and training more young people from retail and fashion was needed. While Steve O’Leary from Specsavers suggested that the current qualification Certificate IV in Optical Dispensing should be the bare minimum required to work as an optical dispenser. Steve Daras Optical Course Coordinator from TAFE Digital (TAFE NSW) reminded the group that deregulation had seen a significant drop in numbers of employers formally educating their staff. He said that education and not just training is needed to improve optical dispensing knowledge and skills. He went on to say that the workplace can’t cope with this as there is very little spare time, limited resources and expertise to teach people at work.
