25.01.2022 The Australian Professional Photography Awards were recently hosted by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography in Melbourne where professional photographers from around Australian and internationally enter their finest work. 16 students from NMTAFE and over 100 students from around Australia entered the awards with our very own Callan Shiel winning the AIPP Australian Student of the Year. Special mention also to Shaun Furey, Lilly Martin and Katie McDonald for be...ing named finalists in this years awards With such a strong showing in the finalists of the student category, it was no surprise that North Metro winning the "AIPP Australian Photography Institution of the Year" award for the second year in a row. To recognise these achievements, a special presentation was held in the North Metro TAFE Perth campus library where Des Birt (AIPP WA State President) presented the awards Des also presented the "AIPP Australian Tertiary Photography Institution of the Year" award to Michelle Hoad who gratefully accepted the award on behalf of the College and she acknowledged that the successes were indicative of the student talents and hard work under the guidance of their lecturers.

24.01.2022 Earlier this year, flourishing NMTAFE Diploma of Photography student Emma Kelley was accepted into the National headspace 2020 Forum Art Show, an opportunity fo...r young people within the headspace network to share their talents with forum attendees, as well as sharing a message about headspace and mental health. Based on the theme Connections, the showcase was to display up to thirty printed artworks from around Australia, one of which was to be Emmas photograph which is a depiction of the lack of self confidence she went through whilst studying to get her diploma. Emma loves to photograph struggles people go through and create powerful images that depict these struggles to help others understand that theyre not alone - "My main hobby is taking photos! I love photography and its helped me in many different ways over the years. Im with headspace and have been seeing them since 2017. Theyre a wonderful service and only want the best for the people they see. I hope that now and in the future, at least one picture of mine changes how someone feels, inspires them, motivates them or moves them. That would be my greatest achievement. Im very excited to pursue my photography skill and hopefully change lives one day. Well done Emma!

Judging for the Awards will be held over two days at North Metropolitan TAFE in Leederville and is FREE for the public to attend. So come along to watch some of the AIPP's top judges at work exploring and assessing some incredible prints by WA photographers!

12.01.2022 Our Visual Literacy class today were lucky enough to have the amazing @craigsoulsbyart talk to us about his beautiful work when we visited the WA Art gallery to view The Lester Portrait Prize for portraiture . His oil on canvas The archetype of the self is inspired by an exploration of Carl Jungs archetype of self. Craig uses photographs to help plan out his visual work and bring his ideas to the canvas.

09.01.2022 North metropolitan TAFE recently completed their annual photography field trip to Kalbarri Western Australia with their 2nd year advanced diploma students. This is a fantastic opportunity for students to apply the skills they have learnt and further develop new skills and techniques in a unique and remote location.
