24.01.2022 Welsh Wednesday | Taffy Finance Raglan Castle Raglan Castle is one of the last true castles to be built in Wales. Its construction began in the 1430s by Sir William ap Thomas, the Blue Knight of Gwent who fought at the Battle of Agincourt with King Henry V in 1415. He was responsible for building the Great Tower at Raglan, which became known as the Yellow Tower of Gwent.... After William ap Thomas' death in 1445, the castle passed to his son William who took the surname Herbert. Sir William Herbert was a supporter of the House of York and fought at the Battle of Mortimer's Cross in Herefordshire beside the future King Edward IV. In 1462, he became a Knight of the Garter, and in 1467 was chief justice of North Wales. In 1468, Sir William Herbert received the ultimate reward for his loyalty when King Edward IV dubbed him the Earl of Pembroke for capturing Harlech Castle, the last Lancastrian stronghold in Wales. William followed in his father's footsteps by adding Raglan's gatehouse, stately apartments and machicolations atop the gatehouse and Closet Tower. The machicolations, which give the architecture its French appearance, allowed defenders of the castle to drop objects onto attackers below. Construction of the castle was finally completed in 1525. More than six decades later in 1589, during the time of William Somerset, third Earl of Worcester, the castle entered its last major phase of construction. Additions consisted of a new hammer-beam roof to the hall and long gallery on the second floor overlooking the Fountain Court. During the English Civil War in 1646, Raglan Castle was besieged by parliamentarian forces led by Sir Thomas Fairfax. The castle was surrounded and mortar batteries were dug into place. Henry Somerset who attempted to defend the castle, knew his efforts were futile and surrendered to Fairfax. As a result of the siege, the castle was heavily damaged and thus began a period of disrepair. In 1938, Raglan Castle was placed in the guardianship of the Commissioners of HM Works by the 10th Duke of Beaufort. For two decades following the end of World War II, extensive conservation efforts were conducted to maintain the castle. Today, it is maintained by CADW (Welsh Historic Monuments) on behalf of the Secretary of State for Wales. #taffyfinance #homeloans #welshwednesday #clevelandhomeloans #clevelandmortgagebroker #redlanbayhomeloans #vehiclefinance #equipmentfinance

18.01.2022 Happy Halloween | Taffy Finance In pre-Christian times, festivals celebrating the end of harvest and start of winter probably took place in Wales. From the 9th Century onwards, this became bound up with the Christian festivals of All Saints and All Souls Day, after the Church moved these from spring to autumn. "From that time we start to see the emergence of Calan Gaeaf in Wales, bringing together elements of harvest festivals with what we'd now call Halloween," Dr Wood ex...plained. "It would be a time to pay-off the seasonal workers on the farms, and bid farewell to the departed, both living and dead. "The night would be celebrated with a feast of stwmp naw rhyw, a mash of nine different root vegetables with milk, butter, salt and pepper." Dr Wood explained it was also a time for deciding which animals were fit enough to make it through the winter, and which ought to be slaughtered or sent to market before the cold set in. This gave rise to Hwch Ddu, or Black Sow, one of Calan Gaeaf's more bizarre and macabre rituals. "At the end of the festival, one of the slaughtered pigs - usually a man covered in a cloth or animal skin - would rise up, supposedly out of the flames of the fire, and chase away the children. "According to an associated rhyme, the pig would catch the last child to reach their home. "It has its roots in beliefs about the souls of the dead, people and animals, but on a practical level it was probably just a fun and effective way of getting children to bed, and teaching them about the dangers of straying from the group." https://www.bbc.com/news/uk-wales-46019969 #taffyfinance #homeloans #halloween #welshhalloween #clevelandhomeloans #redlandbayhomeloans #clevelandmortgagebroker #vehiclefinance #equipmentfinance

08.01.2022 Welsh Wednesday | Taffy Finance Welsh Haunting - Newton House Dinefwr Park, Llandeilo, Llandeilo, Carmarthenshire... Newton House huddles at the heart of a glorious sylvan landscape, the story of which stretches back through over one thousand years of Welsh history. Originally it was the site of the Rhys family’s castle, the ruins of which still loom large over Dinefwr Park. They were descendents of the ancient Princes of Wales and in the early sixteenth century they Anglicised their name to Rice as the Welsh Aristocracy was absorbed into the English with the coming of the Tudors under Henry VII. The house as it stands today was built in the 1660’s by Edward Rice, although its present façade was added in Victorian times. It is a strange looking house of solid grey stone, its corners crowned by four tall towers each capped by a sloping slate roof, and as you approach it you just know that the place must have a ghost story or two to tell. It is haunted by a ‘White Lady,’ who is thought to be the wronged wraith of Elinir Cavendish, first cousin of the Lady of the house in the 1720’s - although some versions of the story say she was her sister. Tradition maintains that she was being forced to marry a man that she didn’t love, and in order to escape his clutches she sought sanctuary with her family in Dinefwr Park. Incensed by the rejection, her spurned suitor gave chase and, having caught up with her at Newton House, murdered her in cold blood. Her ghost has walked the building ever since and appears to have been particularly active in the 1980’s, when the premises were occupied by a television facilities company. There was much talk of the house possessing a very strange atmosphere and during their tenure a number of television editors fell ill one after the other, which may have been completely co-incidental, but all the same gives pause for thought. Later on a director and an editor were both working in an edit suite when suddenly a young and very beautiful girl appeared, seemingly out of nowhere, and proceeded to glide across the room before vanishing into a cupboard. They searched the area where she had disappeared but there was no sign of their mysterious visitor and they were left to contemplate the fact that they had been honoured by a visit from the spectral white Lady of Newton House. #taffyfinance #homeloans #welshwednesday #clevelandhomeloans #clevelanmortgagebroker #redlandbayhomeloans #vehiclefinance #equipmentfinance

07.01.2022 Welsh Wednesday | Taffy Finance FELINFOEL BREWERY - HOME OF THE DRAGON Felinfoel Brewery is a brewery based in the village of Felinfoel near Llanelli, Carmarthenshire, Wales. The existing brewery building dates from 1878, constructed by local innkeeper (and iron and tinplate works owner) David John. The brewery grew to employ fifty people and expanded its market to the surrounding counties. After John's retirement his sons took over the business and, in 1906, it was regist...ered as a limited company. In the 1920s the company was managed by John's daughter, Mary Anne Lewis, a formidable woman who always carried a big stick. In 1935 Felinfoel became the first brewery in the UK (and one of the first breweries in Europe) to produce beer in cans. It managed to stop the beer reacting with the metal by coating the inside of the cans with wax, unlike the Gottfried Krueger Brewing Company in the USA, who had to create a new pasteurised drink to get around the problem when they produced the world's first canned beer earlier the same year Felinfoel were spurred into action when the Western Mail announced rival brewery Buckley's was investigating canned beer. Felinfoel won the race, producing their first canned beer in December 1935. Felinfoel had the advantage of owning a tinplate works. In turn, the local tinplate industry benefited from the developments, with Llanelli's Trostre tinplate works going on to produce all of Britain's tinplate for food and drink cans and cookware. The cans were originally half pint containers, with a crimped metal top. They were packaged in cardboard boxes of twenty four cans. Because of their light weight, relatively to the traditional glass beer bottles, the Felinfoel beer was a popular choice to send to the British soldiers during World War II. However, the wax coating did not work so well in warmer climates, melting and giving the beer an unpleasant taste, possibly leading to Felinfoel's nickname of "Feeling Foul". The Felinfoel Brewery building has a heritage listing, as a "rare surviving example of a once important industry in Wales". It continues to be run as a brewery by descendants of David John. #taffyfinance #welshwednesday #homeloans #clevelandhomeloans #clevelandmortgagebroker #redlandbayhomeloans #vehiclefinance #equipmentfinance

03.01.2022 Welsh Wednesday | Taffy Finance Castell Henllys Iron Age Fort Situated between Newport and Cardigan, Castell Henllys is an Iron Age inland promontory fort, which has been excavated for over 20 years. In fact, the site is one of the most intensively studied hillforts in Britain and has a continuing programme of research and excavation, run to train the archaeology students at York University.... Hillforts such as Castell Henllys were probably home to a community of extended families, maybe up to 150 people, and building and maintaining the site would have been a big commitment for the inhabitants. Excavation of the defences has shown how massive and complex they were, particularly at the gateway end, going through many phases of rebuilding and construction. This may show that Welsh Iron Age society was violent, and that’s why so many communities were prepared to invest in hillforts. A large slingshot hoard a rare find for Britain was discovered behind the rampart at Castell Henllys, suggesting the defences were ready for use. A large portion of the interior of the hillfort has been excavated, and this has produced detailed information about the layout of the site and the lifestyle of its inhabitants so much so that a number of roundhouses and a granary have been recreated on the exact location of the original Iron Age structures. The granary and one of the old roundhouses are the oldest reconstructed prehistoric buildings in Britain. The first roundhouse (Roundhouse One) was excavated in 1981 and is located to the south-east of the site. Reconstructed the following year, it has a diameter of 10m and is unique in that it has an inner ring of timber posts. Roundhouse Two is a smaller building (6m in diameter), while Roundhouse Three is roughly the same size as Roundhouse One but, unlike its counterpart, it did not have an inner ring of wooden posts. As well as the roundhouses, the site contained deposits such as carbonized bone, charcoal, grain, several iron objects, pieces of pottery, glass beads and a few spindle whorls. Mick particularly likes the fact that although the site is Iron Age, only a small number of iron objects have been found there, such as a small hunting spearhead and a sickle blade. This indicates what a highly valued commodity it was, and that it was never needlessly discarded but was probably carefully recycled instead. #taffyfinance #welshwednesday #homeloans #clevelandhomeloan #clevelandmortgagebroker #redlandbayhomeloans #vehiclefinance #equipmentfinance
