17.01.2022 Swallow safety when drinking is important even for koalas. For humans ensure an upright position with chin slightly tucked for safe swallowing. For koalas make sure they drink from a container not a bottle or hose. ... Our team of speech pathologists can help if someone is having difficulty eating or drinking.

17.01.2022 A little known fact is that 52-88% of people in the youth justice system have significant communication difficulties and adult justice systems have similarly high incidence rates. That is grossly disproportionate to the general population. These individuals are at high risk of not being able to understand, ask and answer questions effectively or to be able to self advocate at all. Many will not understand the process or decisions/actions involved in the legal process. Good co...mmunications skills have been shown to be a protective factor for numerous things and studies where speech pathology interventions were provided for individuals in the justice system have delivered promising results. I think government funding for speech pathology assessment and interventions should be provided for youth offenders or individuals "at risk" of entering the youth justice system. What do you think? See this report from Australia for more details: https://www.aph.gov.au/DocumentStore.ashx What can we do about this alarming statistic? Here are some suggestions and resources from a NZ project: https://talkingtroublenz.org//youth-voices-about-youth-ju/

16.01.2022 Happy International Womens Day. Sometimes its easy to forget the contribution women make to individuals, families, communities, countries and the world. According to Oxfam women contribute 10.9 billion dollars worth of unpaid labour each year. Much of the work women do is thankless so wed like to take a moment today to express our gratitude to some very special women. ... Thank you to mothers everywhere who gave of their body to create and birth new life. Some of you have done so under extreme circumstances and at real risk to yourself - thank you. Thank you to grandmothers, aunts, cousins, sisters, mothers in law and all the other women who, as part of an extended family network, support, teach, love, nurture, raise, lead and set good examples for children. Thank you to adoptive, foster and step mothers who love anothers child as though they were their own. Thank you to the many many women who are unpaid carers looking after those who need so much more than formal systems provide. Thank you to female neighbours, friends and members of the community who offer smiles, kind words, acts of service and a suspension of judgement and unconditional love to help someones journey through life be a little brighter and smoother. Thank you in advance to the girls who will be future leaders by contributing positively to the progress of humanity in their sphere of influence. We are cheering you on! Thank you to women of all ages, cultural backgrounds, religions, sexual orientation, personality, physical and mental capabilities who help make the world a richer place by simply being their own authentic, genuine self. Thank you to every woman who has stood up, spoken up, shaken up and been relentless in advocating, fighting for and insisting on better treatment of women, children and humanity now and throughout history. Some may attack you using unsavoury words and even various forms of violence. Thank you for being willing to be a target to protect others. We have a team of strong, intelligent, caring, dedicated and talented women at TAG (plus a few good men who also fit these descriptors ). It is an honour to see them each and every day try their best to use that dedication and skill to help others. Thank you women of TAG for all you do, keep up the good work!

11.01.2022 A question our dietitian commonly gets asked is about milk versus supplements. Sometimes kids drink a pile of milk and eat very little food. This is definitely dietitian intervention time when this happens! Often in this case a dietitian may commence a milk-based supplement instead of plain milk as an interim intervention to ensure nutrient requirements are met while the child learns to eat more solid food. The key is to work out which supplement the child should take and ...to maintain nutritional adequacy while the child transitions onto a "normal" diet. Typically, milk-based supplements meet most nutrient requirements except for iron, which is a bit trickier so its important to only use them with a dietitians advice and guidance. Dietitians also try to find the fine balance between having enough of the supplement to meet requirements while allowing the child to have the opportunity to feel hungry - as a bit of hunger is typically the biggest motivator for children to eat. On that note though, we obviously dont want to starve children! Our team are always open to questions - we hope this one was helpful for you!
