23.01.2022 It's International Composting Awareness Week Australia! Most of us know that compost is vital in providing essential nutrients for plant growth, it fertilises t...he soil and creates a healthy environment for plants and crops. But did you know compost plays a crucial role towards building a sustainable environment for future generations? By composting food waste at home or work, you will be diverting waste from going to landfill and reducing greenhouse gas emissions in the environment. Using compost as a natural fertiliser nurtures our soils and eliminates the need for synthetic chemicals, ensuring that we get high quality, sustainably grown food. It helps connect us with a more sustainable way of growing food that is circular (continually adds to the soil and turns our waste into a resource). Compost gives you healthy soil and helps reduce the need for watering. Compost has a water holding capacity in excess of 30% and is a key ingredient in locking nutrients in, producing healthier soil. In addition to helping retaining water and nutrients, it helps breaks up heavy clay soils therefore producing healthier soil and better plant growth Compost reduces dependency on peat based growing media and chemical fertilisers. Peat comes from bogs that are important 'carbon sinks' and are home to a range of plant and animal species. Production of these chemical fertilisers also uses large amounts of energy resulting in significant greenhouse gas emissions - so composting protects our biodiversity too! Find out more at www.compostweek.com.au

22.01.2022 Gossy at the Taggerty Post Office - please be patient while he sorts - it takes time to take care of your post. Please dont try to collect before 1pm - the mail gets to Taggerty later in the morning because of the backlog across the system so we are behind to begin with. Regards - stay home and stay safe. Sandice and Gossy

18.01.2022 WARNING FROM A POLICE OFFICER I would like to take this opportunity to alert my friends on Facebook to please be aware of some of the Facebook posts you commen...t on especially now while the world seems to be at a standstill. These posts ask questions such as, "What was your favorite teachers name? Who was your 1st grade teacher? Who was your childhood best friend? What was your first car?" etc. Do these questions sound familiar? They should. These are the same questions you are asked as security questions when setting up bank accounts and credit card accounts. When answering these questions and posting them, you are giving out answers to your security questions that you may be using without realizing it. Hackers are setting these up as a "get to know each other better" game on Facebook. Thanks and stay safe. See more

03.01.2022 POLICE OUT IN FORCE FOR EASTER UPDATE - Given the amount of discussion on this post around Easter holidays and holiday homes, DHHS was contacted this morning (8.../4/2020). A state government spokesperson said, "The rules are clear - and they dont change over Easter: if you can stay at home, you must stay at home. "If people have a normal Easter holiday - travelling, visiting friends, heading to the beach or staying in regional Victoria - we will see all our hard-won gains evaporate. "This is tough for many families, but no Easter holiday is worth a life. "Stay at home, protect the health system, and save lives." PREVIOUSLY - Sergeant Marty McLachlan from Mansfield Highway Patrol is advising people that police will be out in force across Easter. There are concerns across the shire about people with coronavirus visiting the shire and potentially infecting locals with COVID-19. People have four reasons to leave their homes under the Stay at Home rules - shopping for what you need (food and essential supplies); medical, care or compassionate needs; exercise in compliance with the public gathering requirements; or work and study if you cant work or learn remotely. There have been questions asked about holiday houses. Sgt McLachlan advised that people need to have defined their principal place of residence generally the address on a drivers licence. If people have more than one house, they need to have chosen one location during the first 24 hours after the decree and stayed there. There should not be travel between residences. Police are already stopping people in their normal course of their duties. If the people are not local, they are questioned about why theyre in the area. If they dont have a valid reason, they are asked to leave. If they choose not to, police have the power to arrest and/or issue a fine of $1600. Mansfield Highway Patrol will give attention to the Maroondah Highway across Easter. The State Highway Patrol will also be in the area in large numbers. Police from Operation Sentinel (focused on coronavirus issues) are also likely to be active in the area. Tourists will be discouraged from entering the shire and turned away unless they have a valid reason.
