23.01.2022 Have you started trying to collate records to support your tax return & found receipts are faded or missing? Documents can be kept in paper or electronic form so why dont you try downloading the free Dropbox app to your phone (or another similar)? This allows you to take a photo of your receipt when you get it or upload documents from your computer & stores the file electronically. Even better, you can then share the folder with your tax agent! Much less paper, much less hassle & in most cases, many more records to support your claim!

20.01.2022 Another bill passed which won't affect too many of you but will make a huge difference to those it does; employees with multiple employers can now complete an "employer shortfall exemption certificate" so that one employer does not need to make super contributions on your behalf, helping you to avoid unintentionally breaching your concessional contributions cap & the associated penalties. Win!

19.01.2022 A really handy tip I've just discovered to find & rollover lost super. If you login to the ATO via your MyGov account & click on "Super" >> "Fund Details", this will list all super accounts & amounts the ATO currently has recorded for you. You may be surprised! You can then click "transfer super" to get one account rolled into another, its as easy as that :)

18.01.2022 Last day to lodge your individual tax returns for FY2017 today everyone!! If youre struggling to get it done in time or need some help, just let me know & I can add you to my lodgement list so you get the benefit of an extension until May 2018

17.01.2022 The ATO has just released a ruling (TR 2018/2) explaining its views on electronic record keeping. In short, it is encouraged but you need to ensure the records include, at a minimum, the date, amount & character of the transaction. True & clear electronic reproductions of original paper records may be keep, just make sure that the conversion process produces a complete copy! There are hundreds of options available - Dropbox, Office Lens, CamScanner, Scanner App or even the ATOs own app. Just find what works for you! And remember, electronic records still need to be kept for 5 years so might be best to keep a backup, just to be safe!

17.01.2022 Good news - a bill to extend the $20,000 instant asset write-off for small businesses to 30 June 2019 has been passed by the House of Reps! This threshold was otherwise due to revert to $1,000 as of 1 July 2018. Nonetheless, if youre thinking about any capital spend over the next few months & have the ability / opportunity to bring this forward pre-30 June 2018, I recommend doing so. This means you will be able to claim the amount as a deduction in your 30 June 2018 tax return & get the benefit sooner. Crazy how soon year-end is approaching!!

16.01.2022 Health insurance is something which hurts the back pocket for most of us & is entirely cost prohibitive for others! Legislation was introduced into parliament yesterday dealing with reforms to private health insurance, one of which is to allow insurers to offer products with increased voluntary excess limits in return for lower premiums. While not likely to be in place until 2019, keep an eye out for the changes as you might be able to transfer to a much cheaper policy which still meets your needs & still be eligible for the Medicare Levy surcharge exemption in your tax return. Win win.

15.01.2022 ALL - The ATO has just advised that this year they are focusing on what people are claiming as work-related expenses. This means you need to be extra vigilant & ensure you have appropriate records + are only claiming costs directly related to earning your income. They have also reiterated that individuals ARE NOT automatically entitled to claim standard deductions but need to show how they worked out their claims. That means if you have a tax agent who is putting in a standar...d 5,000km ($3,300) for motor vehicle expenses or $150 for laundry each year, without considering your specific circumstances, they could be putting you at risk of review & penalties. While getting a large refund is great, pls make sure you have someone preparing your return that will get you the best legitimate outcome rather than causing you a costly headache in the future... https://www.ato.gov.au//In/Focus-on-work-related-expenses/

14.01.2022 For any rental property owners: The ATO has just released 2 x flyers to help clients understand tax & property investment, how to avoid common mistakes & what records need to be kept. This comes as part of their campaign to deal areas of significant non-compliance. I have attached below FYI but feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to discuss further.... https://www.ato.gov.au//Top%2010%20tips%20to%20help%20rent https://www.ato.gov.au//Tax-smart%20tips%20for%20investmen

14.01.2022 Happy 30 June everyone!!! Today is the day to squeeze in any last minute shopping to buy anything youve been holding off on for your business & get the deduction included in your FY2017 tax return. So go enjoy those sales :)

12.01.2022 After a bit of a political battle, the Governments Personal Income Tax Plan as announced in the budget has been passed by Parliament. Updated rates & thresholds are below:

12.01.2022 Just a reminder for those of you running a small business - if you buy an asset before tomorrow (1 July 2017) & it costs less than $20k, you can immediately deduct the entire business portion in your FY2017 tax return! The 2017 Budget announced an extension of this instant write-off threshold to 30 June 2018 but it is yet to be passed in parliament so best to get in today if you have the chance :) Currently, the threshold reduces to $1,000 from 1 July 2017.

02.01.2022 Be wary of emails, phone calls & text messages claiming to be from the ATO as there are a number of scams around the place. See here for more details: https://www.ato.gov.au//Onl/Identity-security/Scam-alerts/ The ATO will contact your tax agent directly or correspond through MyGov. If you are in doubt, get in touch with me or contact the ATO on 1800 008 540 to verify the correspondence.
