12.01.2022 Featured before, but repeated for the newcomers to this site. George Russell... Camel Cartage Contractor... Murray Mallee, South Australia. 1910. George Russell... a cartage contractor operating in remote areas not yet serviced by road or rail, sent this postcard to his mother. It says: Our camp and camel team, 40 miles east of Tailem Bend, South Australia. May 1910. An earlier card from George to his sister Elsie and dated 17 October 1909, depicts his camel team and informs her that he had just taken a load of timber to Schells Well. This well was located 23 miles south-west of Loxton, River Murray, South Australia. The first group of camels to Australia came from the Canary Islands. Only one of their number survived the journey and landed at Port Adelaide, in October 1840. After working for several years at a sheep station, the camel embarked on an 1846 expedition that would secure its place in history. John Horrocks, the camel's owner, and 5 otheron horseback were exploring unknown country West of Lake Torrens. Horrocks decided to shoot a bird for his collection, and while loading his gun the camel lurched and the gun fired. Horrocks lost two fingers and blew his jaw off. He was taken back to Penwortham sheep station, but died a month later. The first camel in Australia was executed at Horrocks request. In 1860 The Royal Society of Victoria, decided to sponsor an expedition to cross the continent from south to north. This led to the next major group of camels to come to Australia. The Burke-Wills expedition comprised of thirty camels with twenty men and supplies set off on 20 August 1860. History tells us that his expedition ended in tragedy. As time went by, experienced Afghans would show that camels were quick to adapt to Australian conditions. They travelled over the stones with loads apparently quite unconcerned; They eat anything nearby from the gum tree to the smallest herb, and then come lie down beside you, whereas horse's and bullocks, if there be any lack of feed, will ramble all over the country. Thus the stage was set for the first large scale camel importation into Australia. Full grown camels stand between 1.8 and 2 metres tall at the shoulders and weigh between 250 and 680 kilograms. They have a thick, woolly fur coat that gives them an appearance larger than they actually are. Their four legs are muscular, allowing them to carry huge loads over long distances. Camels can carry loads up to 450 kilograms, but generally loads are around 150 kg. A camels cruising speed is 5 Km's an hour, and they typically travel forty miles a day. Australia has become the world's leading exporter of camels, selling high quality camels to Middle Eastern countries such as Saudi Arabia. Today it is estimated that between 250,000 and 300,000 camels are wild in Australia. From my collection and dated May 1910.
