24.01.2022 TOE NAILS Nails can be problematic to cut, especially if they are thick, unusually shaped, or hard to reach. At Talaria our podiatrists provide the finest nail care at regular intervals to maintain exquisite foot health, preventing pain or any further complications. With our modern equipment and professionally sterilized instruments your safety and health is our primary concern. INGROWN NAILS Ingrown toenails are a common condition where the nail either pushes or grows... into the edge of the skin. This can lead to pain, swelling, and sometimes if left, an infection. When treated swiftly and effectively discomfort can be prevented and everything resolved without a problem. This may be as simple as cutting the nail with a specific technique or removing any built up corns or callus in the edge. If the nail is a re-occurring problem, the surgically trained podiatrists at Talaria can perform a simple and non invasive procedure to remove the offending nail spike and prevent it from growing back, while maintaining the cosmetic appearance of the nail. FUNGAL INFECTIONS Fungal infections are caused by dermatophytes, a group of fungi that invades and grows in skin or nails. When the skin is affected (tinea pedis) it can be red, flaky, itchy or blistered. Nails (Onychomycosis) become discoloured, thickened, yellow and brittle. Our Podiatrists are able to diagnose these conditions, provide education and thorough treatment solutions to resolve any issues and prevent re-occurrence. #podiatry #talariapodiatristofthornbury #podiatristthornbury #podiatristmelbourne #thornbury #foothealth #heelpain #footpain #running #runnersfeet #feet #myfeet #podiatrist #plantarfasciitis #shinsplints #achillespain #ankle #calfpain # #ankleinjuries #isofit #orthotics #toenailinfection #toenails #keryflex

23.01.2022 NUMBER 3 CORNS & CALLUS A callus is hard or thickened skin that forms on the foot due to excess mechanical pressure. When left too long the callus can build up, become thick and irritating or even crack. When these pressures are concentrated into a small area a corn may develop. Corns are formed by the same hard skin as a callus, however they are shaped like a cone pushing into the soft skin underneath - this is why they hurt!... Common Sites of Corns and Calluses: The ball of the foot The heels Under or on the side of the big toe Tips of the toes Bony prominences Why Corns and Calluses Occurs: Walking patterns caused by abnormal pressure distribution Tight footwear Atrophy of plantar fat pads Claw/ hammer toes or bunions Treatment At Talaria our podiatrists are highly skilled and have the tools to remove corns and calluses swiftly and painlessly. The podiatrists will also determine the cause of the corn or callus and provide education and methods to reduce re-occurrence. This may include customised padding, footwear advice, guidance around foot care such as emollient or even orthotic therapy to offer long term pressure relief. #talariapodiatristofthornbury #podiatristthornbury #podiatristmelbourne #podiatrist #podiatry #highstthornbury #footpain #sorefeet #soretoes

20.01.2022 ORTHOTICS Orthotics can greatly enhance your quality of life as they realign the feet into a more efficient position, making your feet more comfortable. There are many different types of orthotics available and this is because each person has different needs depending on their footwear, activity levels, injuries, pain and foot type. If you have flat feet, heel pain or pain while undertaking activity you may benefit from orthotic management. Our Podiatrists at Talaria will ...undertake an extensive biomechanical assessment to identify any factors causing pain that may be addressed with orthotics. Orthotics can help: Flat feet Plantar fasciitis High arch feet Bunions Knee pain Achilles pain Heel pain Frequent ankle sprains Shin pain Custom OrthoticsThe most effective orthotics are custom made devices that are crafted to meet the specific needs of the individual. There are circumstances where custom orthotics are required, in this case a mould will be taken providing us with an exact replica of your feet. This information is then sent to the lab with your prescription form to create the specific orthotic designed for you. Custom built devices can be made slimmer and more comfortable which is especially important in women’s shoes, men’s dress shoes and footy boots. Pre-Fabricated Orthotics For certain patients, a fully customised orthotic may not be necessary. At Talaria we also offer podiatric semi-customised, pre-fabricated devices. These offer an alternative level of support and control and can be suitable for acute conditions and even growing kids. The type of orthotics prescribed will be discussed and decided upon by you and the Podiatrist together. #podiatry #talariapodiatristofthornbury #podiatristthornbury #podiatristmelbourne #thornbury #foothealth #heelpain #footpain #running #runnersfeet #feet #myfeet #podiatrist #plantarfasciitis #shinsplints #achillespain #ankle #calfpain # #ankleinjuries #isofit #orthotics

14.01.2022 PLANTAR FASCIITIS If you are experiencing heel or arch pain then you probably have a condition called plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a band of connective tissue that runs from the heel to the ball of the foot. When this area becomes painful, swollen and damaged it is referred to as plantar fasciitis. This condition is caused by abnormal stresses running through the foot, most commonly by excess pronation or flat feet. Common symptoms:... Tenderness on the heel or arch Pain first thing in the morning when getting out of bed Pain after being seated for a while and standing up Sharp shooting pain getting worse throughout the day Causes of tightness of the plantar fascia: Muscle weakness Restricted joint range of motion Change of footwear or activity Foot posture treatment Left untreated plantar fasciitis can become chronic and lead to further problems. At Talaria we offer a wide range of treatment options to suit your specific case. Our podiatrists will construct a management plan tailored to you which may include shockwave therapy, strapping, footwear advice, stretching and strengthening exercises, orthotic therapy and needling. #podiatry #talariapodiatristofthornbury #podiatristthornbury #podiatristmelbourne #thornbury #foothealth #heelpain #footpain #running #runnersfeet #feet #myfeet #podiatrist #plantarfasciitis #shinsplints #achillespain #ankle #calfpain # #ankleinjuries #isofit #orthotics #plantarfasciitis

13.01.2022 KERYFLEX Fungal nails can take many months to resolve and grow to be aesthetically pleasing, therefore at Talaria we offer KeryFlex, a nail restoration system. KeryFlex is exclusive to podiatrists and provides the appearance of a healthy, smooth, and durable nail. Our podiatrists are trained to apply the treatment to remodel and restore the appearance of a healthy and natural nail, usually lasting six weeks or more. KeryFlex is a painless restoration system that is applie...d by certified professionals to damaged, fungal and unhealthy nails. Not only does it have an immediate cosmetic improvement, but it also protects the nail and reduces any pathologies from progressing. It prevents any water or debris from being trapped underneath as it is non-porous and does not allow moisture to penetrate. This makes the environment a lot cleaner and encourages the nail to grow out healthier. The product is resin based and flexible with the natural nail as it grows, lasting 6-8 weeks making you feel more confident with a more cosmetically appealing nail. Antifungal treatment can be applied to the nail cuticle whist having the KeryFlex. #podiatry #talariapodiatristofthornbury #podiatristthornbury #podiatristmelbourne #thornbury #foothealth #heelpain #footpain #running #runnersfeet #feet #myfeet #podiatrist #plantarfasciitis #shinsplints #achillespain #ankle #calfpain # #ankleinjuries #isofit #orthotics #toenailinfection #toenails #keryflex

10.01.2022 Podiatry is still considered an Essential Service As of Today, Monday March 23, the APodA can confirm that Australian podiatrists are not required to stop pract...icing as a part of the services shut down announced by the government overnight. The ApodA in line with the AHPPC recognises the importance of a nationally consistent approach to measures to reduce the spread of COVID-19, and we encourage podiatrists to consider how they will manage their practice in line with this in the days ahead. We will be providing further updates throughout the day as information comes to hand as well as more resources to support podiatrists. #APodA #podiatryau #covid19 #membersupport #australianpodiatry #australia #health #healthpractitioner #podiatry #coronavirus #assistance #resources

09.01.2022 NUMBER 4 BUNIONS AND TOE PAIN What is a BUNION?... A bunion is a often described as a bump on the side of the big toe. The big toe leans toward the second toe, rather than pointing straight ahead. This throws the bones out of alignment producing the bunion’s bump. Bunions are progressive , they don’t go away and some bunions progress more rapidly than others. Osteoarthritis can develop in the big toe joint as the bunion worsens over time, causing increased pain and stiffness in the joint. Even though bunions are a common foot deformity, many people may unnecessarily suffer the pain of bunions for years before seeking treatment. Causes Bunions are most often caused by an inherited faulty mechanical structure of the foot. It is not the bunion itself that is inherited, but certain foot types that make a person prone to developing a bunion. Footwear can cause pressure on the bump leading to pain, but do not actually cause the bunion. When is surgery needed? If non-surgical treatments fail to relieve bunion pain and when the pain of a bunion interferes with daily activities. The goal of surgery is the reduction of pain. A variety of surgical procedures is available to treat bunions. If you have more questions regarding this out Podiatric Surgeon Dr. Baarini can help! What is HAMMERTOE? Hammertoe is a bending of one or both joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth (little) toes. This abnormal bending can put pressure on the toe when wearing shoes, causing issues. In the earlier stages, hammertoes are flexible and the symptoms can often be managed with non-surgical measures. But if left untreated, hammertoes can become more rigid and will not respond to non-surgical treatment. Causes The most common cause of hammertoe is a muscle/tendon imbalance. This leads to a bending of the toe, results from mechanical (structural) changes in the foot that occur over time in some people. Hammertoes may be inherited, aggravated by shoes that don’t fit properly or be the result of an earlier trauma to the toe. #podiatristmelbourne #thornbury #foothealth #heelpain #plantarfasciitis #bunion #bunionsurgery #podiatricsurgeon

09.01.2022 One of the most common questions we get is....CORN OR WART?? Here is some info on how to diagnose... 1. TIMING... Warts have a relatively rapid onset. Meanwhile, a corn can take months or even years to develop. Warts are generally caused by a viral infection. This is a very targeted and discrete infection and reaction to the human papilloma virus (HPV). This is why the onset is sudden, painful and covers a small area. However, you may develop more than wart which can extend to more areas of the foot. Pressure and friction play a role, but not to the same degree as with a corn. 2. AREA ON FOOT A wart can occur anywhere on the foot. A corn usually occurs wherever there is a pressure point. A corn will happen at the site or a bunion or where the ball of the foot has thinned out and the bone presses through to the ground. Warts have no such constraints and happen all over. Remember, warts are caused by a virus and this means that pressure is not mandatory for it to form. 3. THE PUSH/SQUEEZE TEST Generally for corns, they are most painful whenever direct pressure is applied to it such as pushing on it with your finger. Warts, on the other hand, are more painful with side-to-side pressure or when you squeeze them. 4. WHERE DOES A SKIN LINE PASS THROUGH THE LESION? For a wart, skin lines (wrinkles) will pass around the lesion (skin spot). Corns, on the other hand, usually involve the skin line. That is, the wrinkle on the foot will actually pass right through the problem. This can often make treatment difficult and you should seek care from a professional. It you think that you have a corn or wart and would like to have it removed, call and make an appointment we can help!

06.01.2022 SHOCKWAVE THERAPY Shockwave therapy is aimed at accelerating tissue repair and cell growth, reduction of pain and increased mobility. It also promotes new blood vessel formation, which helps increase blood flow and supports faster healing to the area. Essentially it kick starts the body’s natural healing mechanisms. At Talaria we believe that skilful implementation of shockwave as part of a treatment approach can be vital in achieving the best outcome for our patients. Cou...ld Shockwave Help You? The most common conditions in the lower limb treated with clinically proven success include: Plantar Fasciitis Heel Pain Achilles Tendinopathy Iliotibial band syndrome Tight calves Shin splints Most patients experience a small pain reduction and greater range of movement immediately after the treatment. Shockwave therapy is often effective where previous conservative management has failed to resolve notoriously stubborn complaints. The treatment is non- invasive and does not require anaesthesia, making it ideal for those who do not want, or may not be suited for surgery. #podiatry #talariapodiatristofthornbury #podiatristthornbury #podiatristmelbourne #thornbury #foothealth #heelpain #footpain #running #runnersfeet #feet #myfeet #podiatrist #plantarfasciitis #achilles #achillespain #ankle #calfpain #shinsplints #ankleinjuries #isofit #shockwave #shockwavetherapy

05.01.2022 **UPDATE** As per the governments advice tonight, allied health businesses such as ourselves are to remain OPEN. What many of you may not realise is that part of this reason IS TO KEEP PRESSURE OFF OUR HOSPITAL SYSTEM. Studies have shown that allied health services such as Podiatry, Physio, Chiro, Osteo, Psychologist, Diabetes educators and more PREVENT PEOPLE FROM MAKING UNNECESSARY VISITS TO THE HOSPITAL. If it is any time to help our health system and work together it is... now, therefore we will remain open for this very reason to keep our hospitals free of foot issues. Please be reassured that we are taking every measure of infection control and non contact to make your visit as safe as possible. We are here for your service and to do our little part to keep doctors and nurses doing what they need to in this crisis.
