22.01.2022 If youre a job seeker right now, no doubt you have some anxiety about how the playing field has changed when it comes to apply for for jobs. As we posted last week, there are now dozens of candidates for every position, and most companies are receiving over 100 applications to their adverts. Standing out is critical, so we are providing tips on how to do just that. Our first tip, which we posted last week, was to update and redesign your resume. Here is our tip #2: Include a... covering letter. A covering letter is your chance to demonstrate your personality and to address why the role excites you and what value you will add. If you want to impress in the digital age, send a video covering letter (an iPhone recording will do the trick!) This not only allows a hiring manager to connect directly with you as they can see your face, but you can also demonstrate your presentation and communication skills. Physical networking may be more challenging than normal at present with lock down restrictions, but this doesnt mean you should go quiet! Get onto your social channels (LinkedIn is the most professional-based) and communicate and engage with professionals in your area and/or chosen industry. ... You never know when someone might have an opportunity they havent gone to market with yet and because you talked to them, they will think of you! Liking posts, commenting, engaging and generally being interested in what others have to say in your network will both give you something to do, and increase the chance of people thinking of you first when they hear about an opportunity.

As a candidate, you need to ensure that you have selected the right referees in the first place and not just quickly scrambled a few names together at the bottom of your CV. Gone are the days where a reference check was conducted as a just in case option. Today, a hiring manager will be looking to see where your strengths lie, whether there may be areas that require development and how you react or interact within certain environments.
