Being told not to leave the house increases emotional, psychological, economical and physical risk for many people - mostly women and children. If you know someone who is in a relationship and considering separating, I can guarantee they will be receiving well meaning but often misinformed advice from family and friends. So many clients come to see me having labored under misapprehensions about separation and the law for a very long time. As a result, people have stayed in relationships that they would otherwise have left, and some have left in situations where they would have benefited from so...me advice before doing so. Knowledge is power and the sooner a person understands their options the better they can look after themselves - physically, emotionally and financially - and their children. Lawyers have a terrible reputation, and unfortunately much of it is deserved. But a good lawyer who will explain your options to you in a clear way, can provide a path forward and take away much of the fear, stress and anxiety around separation. Do your friend a favour and encourage them to seek advice earlier rather than later. Having a confidential appointment with a family lawyer does not mean court.
