25.01.2022 Following our own sage advice and making time for a little self-care.

24.01.2022 As we continue to adapt to Covid-19, in the interest of everyone’s safety, especially our patients, we have started wearing masks and ask that they wear one too. Long appointments and conversations generate aerosols which can unknowingly put all of us at risk. For those patients who feel claustrophobic or anxious, you can modify a cloth mask or scarf so that it’s loose and comfortable. We are also continuing to offer Telehealth appointments for those who would prefer to stay home. #mask #covid19 #publichealth #safety

24.01.2022 Parenting is hard. And sometimes we need an expert to hold our hand. Dr Justin Coulson has been my go-to person for tips on how to connect and manage challenging behaviours. He has an excellent podcast series full of brilliant tips. Go to; https://www.happyfamilies.com.au/podcasts/ And if you would like some face-to-face parenting advice, Dr Jess Dwyer is our resident parenting specialist. Jess has worked in Paediatric Psychology for over a decade. Her goal - like Justin - is to support and coach parents to build happier relationships with their kids.

24.01.2022 We can all be our own worst critic. Perfectionism and self-criticism can wreak havoc on our self-esteem, goal attainment, body image, and quality of life. #bekindtoyourself #bekindtoyourmind

21.01.2022 A picture of some of the TalkSpace Psychology team doing online training earlier today. Did you know psychologists are required to do ongoing yearly training to ensure that we are up to date with the best possible treatments to help our clients? I'm so proud of these clinicians and their commitment to learning and practicing their clinical skills.

17.01.2022 This week is the start of the Perinatal Mental Health Week (PMHW) campaign, "We're here, we're listening". This is a timely reminder to all to check in on all expectant and new parents who are having a baby during this global pandemic. According to the Gidget Foundation, 81% of expectant and new parents are feeling increased anxiety due to the pandemic, which has changed the way we are able to celebrate, birth, and support new parents. Perinatal depression and anxiety do n...ot discriminate, affecting 1 in 5 new mums and 1 in 10 new dads, which is approximately 100,000 people each year. So we encourage you all to look out for one another and please remember we're here, and we're listening.

17.01.2022 Do more of what makes you happy... seems simple right?! Unfortunately when we become stressed or overwhelmed, we often stop doing activities that give us pleasure or joy. We simply feel we don’t have the time or energy to put into them. The problem then is that we often become MORE stressed and unhappy, as we don’t prioritise and focus on an activities that refuel / replenish us. Joy and pleasure are medicine for the soul. So give yourself permision to stop and do more of what makes you happy. You’ll only feel better for it.

16.01.2022 Burnout is one of our most common presenting concern at this time of year. And COVID-19 has has meant the line between home and work is even more blurry. Look after yourselves, you can serve no-one if you've got nothing left in your tank.

16.01.2022 Anxiety is more than just feeling stressed or worried, it impacts on our ability to concentrate, sleep, and to carry out normal daily tasks. It also manifests in our bodies in so many ways - some of which can be very frightening. Being able to recognise the symptoms of anxiety is an important first step in learning how to better manage it.

15.01.2022 Small moments of connection can make the biggest difference in our relationships.

13.01.2022 I love Dr Justin and have followed his advice for years now... you may even have spotted a few of his books on my bookshelf. His article below is definitely worth a read because parenting is HARD, and we all make mistakes... In the moment, when things are about to blow up, we actually need to do precisely the opposite of what our emotions are telling us to do. We want to explode. We need to explore. We want to reprimand. We need to lean in and understand. We want to be furious. We need to be curious.

12.01.2022 I’ve had a few clients struggling with procrastination lately. It’s something that we all experience and unfortunately there is no quick fix. However, following are some simple tips to try help push against procrastination; - ask yourself whether the task just feels too big and overwhelming? If so, try to break it down into to small achievable steps. This can make it easier to get started. - make your consequences as immediate as possible. Sometimes we don’t start until we K...NOW that something negative will happen. Think about linking negative consequence to not getting the task done. For example, not going to the gym might mean letting down the friend you organise to meet. - make yourself accountable by telling those around you about your plans. - follow action with a reward, and make the reward as immediate as possible (e.g if you hate ironing, try doing it in front of a show you love or if you have hundreds of emails to get through, go sit in a nice cafe and complete them while you enjoy a coffee) - visual cues can also enhance motivation, so try develop a visual display of your progress. If you’re really struggling, there may be other things going on. Speak to your psychologist to see if they can help. Talkspace Psychology, Neutral Bay
