25.01.2022 Small, Dutch and Handy taking over the basement workshop and learning how to use the electric drill (with the Tall one supervising just out of shot of course ;-) )

24.01.2022 You know it's a tall cupboard when it towers over this tall Dutchman! Only just fits under the beams in the workshop. Also getting tall is our little boy, Finn, who's clocked in at a metre high already! It's his 3rd birthday today, Gefeliciteerd Finntje!

24.01.2022 Tall, Dutch and Handy is one year old and what a year its been! The support and trust from the community has been humbling, amazing and we cant thank everyone enough for letting me come into your homes and work. Weve helped over 40 clients in Moorooka, Tarragindi, Salisbury, Yeronga and even further out on a range of very different jobs. As with many new businesses there was a steep learning curve in all sorts of areas and we cant wait to apply all of what we learned to ...the next year to be of better service. Its safe to say that no one expected what were going through right now. Although Tall, Dutch and Handy is still operational Covid-19 has definitely slowed things down. Regardless we consider ourselves fortunate and were very grateful for still being in business. We hope for the best outcome and that everybody stays safe and healthy. Thanks again and were looking forward to the next year!

24.01.2022 We all know I havent had the best of luck with apprentices lately so I decided to change species and see how that works. Long story short, it didnt. Although greeted with lots of curiosity and a seemingly willingness to learn, I ended up doing all the work anyway. Regardless, Im looking forward to showing you the end result of this project very soon.

23.01.2022 (Dutch)Man at Work! Happy long weekend everyone!

22.01.2022 One year ago - nowadays the Small Dutchman isn't quite so small anymore!

21.01.2022 Vrolijk Kerstfeest as we say in The Netherlands. I hope everyone has a wonderful Christmas! Photo courtesy of Jess Ann Photography

21.01.2022 Just when I thought projects cant get any bigger, it turns out they can. This project was long overdue and thanks to the creative mind of my wife we were able to transform and organise a massive downstairs area into a multi functional living, relax, storage and craft space. Materials were sourced wherever possible to meet the clients budget. A healthy mix of Bunnings, Ikea, Salvos, Facebook Marketplace and yours truly in collaboration with my wife made all of this happen.

21.01.2022 Very pleased with these floating shelves installed in the past week. The bottom shelves are over 5 meters long and 35cm deep, stepping up to a top shelf of 1 meter in length and just over 25cm deep. There were a number of challenges present - hidden super-thin framework behind the plasterboard that was meant to be solid brick, the incredible weight of a solid 5 metre length of Ash, and colour-matching the stain to match an existing live-edge bar slab. In this case to save so...me $ on materials we decided to stain laminated Ash panels to get a walnut finish instead of buying solid walnut. The panels needed to be cut into boards, which I did by hand in my workshop, and because of the last-minute temperamental nature of the wall decided on a small corner bracket at the top of each raised end to make them extra secure, which will be hidden by books once they're all set up. Happy to provide extra photos on request. Now on to the next job!

20.01.2022 Picture taken this morning on our first official #stayhome day. I'll still be going out for essential house and work supplies but apart from that we're following the current advice to isolate our little family in our home. Truth be told, there won't be a whole heap of difference for my working methods - the perks of being a sole-trader with a garage-based workshop! As long as Bunnings is open for trade clients I'll be able to continue working on my current projects. There ...will be a few changes to my working hours, however, to accommodate our 3 year old being at home full-time. Work will now be wedged between naps and duplo time, when Finn's occupied on the trampoline and when he's engaged in craft activities with Nissa. There are a lot of families trying to figure out this work-from-home balance right now, and it's definitely a challenge. I'm sure Finn's new love of watching The Gruffalo will come in very handy some days! We wish everyone all the best; with our new, smaller lifestyles, and with staying healthy and safe.

20.01.2022 *FAQs* What work can you do? A good overview is in my cover image, and you can look through my albums for previous work completed, however Im always open to new projects too. A general rule is that if its exterior work or structural work then youre better off contacting a carpenter. If its interior, or lives inside or on your deck, then give me a call....Continue reading

19.01.2022 I don’t care what the skill level is of these apprentices. They’re hired!

18.01.2022 And lastly a little video tour of the first half of the room. Can't wait to share Stage 2 with you all! (And 3 and 4... )

18.01.2022 Bay window seat update: You may remember this recently completed project. Well, the client had found a painter to finish the job and sent me some updated pictures. I couldn’t be happier and I think it looks amazing!

18.01.2022 Behind the scenes

18.01.2022 A clients wish, which she has had for a while, has finally come true. To make the most out of a bay window I built a bay window seat with storage underneath based on an image the client provided. To complete the built in look, skirting was added onto the unit matching the same profile already present in the room. The client intends to have it painted as soon as possible. I cant wait for the final result!

16.01.2022 Another longer project finished this week - my first commissioned carving project in Australia. The Ipswich Legacy branch asked for a carved wreath and banner to be added to this brass and red-glass torch sconce to bring their famous symbol to 3D life. I was honoured to be able to help, and here is the result, hand-carved Tasmanian Oak finished with boiled linseed oil. #talldutchhandy

16.01.2022 Ready for summer! The floorboards on this deck in Tarragindi were in need of replacing. Although they were structurally in good condition, they werent properly taken care of. It looked like they were on there for decades. A little bit of decking oil to complete the job and theyre good to go for another few decades. When you have a deck thats relatively old or new, I would advice giving it a good clean and applying a fresh coat of oil once every 6 to 12 months depending how exposed it is to the elements.

15.01.2022 Todays apprentice is Bruno. As Ive often experienced, useless when it comes to following instructions. Excellent company.

15.01.2022 We found a windmill and some tulips in Toowoomba! Enjoying a couple of days here with the flowers and sunshine, wishing everyone else a lovely school holidays too!

15.01.2022 To create this pantry wall we combined IKEA flatpacks with custom cabinets. A good tip to know is that it's possible to buy each IKEA component separately, so this massive 800mm wide double door custom cabinet (not a size IKEA stocks) on the left was made possible with standard by-the-metre melamine and two IKEA 400mm x 1000mm doors to match the finish of the flat pack drawer and microwave units. The doors on the cabinet above the fridge were created by buying a third extra door, chopping it in half, and applying new edge banding. Creative thinking!

15.01.2022 Our son's tool bench. Hammer, saw, magic wand. All of the essentials

14.01.2022 Thank you, Facebook memories!

14.01.2022 Finally! It has happened. I own a workshop pet

13.01.2022 Very appropriate carved tulip detail on this vintage dresser that's waiting to be turned into something beautiful again. Can't wait to show everyone how this project turns out.

13.01.2022 Abnormal high temperatures and high humidity, biblical floods running through Tall, Dutch and Handys workshop and power outages! Nothing can stop me from working as this current carving for Ipswich Legacy is cordless and unplugged

11.01.2022 Head on over to Todd and Pup in Moorooka today for a coffee! All proceeds go to firefighters and wildlife and they will match every $ up to $500. Its not that busy so come on down. Or if youre not in or near Moorooka, Im sure you can find another cafe or shop doing a similar thing. Happy Sunday!

10.01.2022 Stage 1 of our Basement Redo, with the goal of creating organised zones in a (finally waterproof!) downstairs living area. Entertainment Zone and Library with room for boxes and boxes of books, a Reading Nook to make use of an awkward small space under the stair landing and a Craft Zone complete with sewing desk and big cutting table. Great fun working with this lovely family from concept to creation.

10.01.2022 Tall, Dutch and Handys first flood! Lets call this an interesting experience . Although damage was kept to a minimum and it hasnt set me back that much, what I planned to do this afternoon didnt happen.

08.01.2022 Ekka Friday. And what do you do? I wanna make noisy, Papa

06.01.2022 Caption competition anyone?

06.01.2022 Who has seen the latest Bluey episode? I think I need to go to Hammerbarn three times a week on average. How about you?

04.01.2022 Tape measures or snails? Littlest apprentice getting creative in the workshop.

02.01.2022 Very happy to have finished off this kitchen wall for some of my favourite clients. A good example of combining flatpack and custom cabinets to create a great look for a great price. Have fun organising your giant new pantry, Jessie and Dave!

01.01.2022 Finally finished the restoration of this cupboard. This one needed a lot of love and attention as a large amount of parts have come undone, were sagging, were broken and even needed to be replaced. Keeping the authentic look of an antique furniture piece is always difficult and I try to work with what I have as much as I can. Unfortunately some parts, like drawer runners and bottoms, needed to be replaced. I could have spent a lot more hours on it but we would then enter an area where the look and the value of the piece is going to be compromised and I aim to keep things as authentic as possible if requested.

01.01.2022 Halfway through the week!

01.01.2022 For lovely clients in Oxley, I was asked to build two cupboards out of MDF. They include a tall and short hanging area, two IKEA Komplement shoe storage drawers and four Häfele drawer systems in each cupboard. Made to look built in and finished in such a manner that they can be painted by the client. I absolutely loved this project and Im looking forward to the next one!

01.01.2022 Welcome to 2020! I hope you enjoyed a break over the holidays. We're excited to start the new year with a whole lot of new projects. I've been in discussions with and working out estimates for a wide variety of jobs - custom bathroom vanities, more restoration work, library and storage solutions, kitchen modifications and even a carving job - which, if they all go according to plan, will take me through to March Thank you to various people that are still waiting on estimates from over the holidays. I've also had enough emails and queries now to put together a FAQs post, you can find it here: https://www.facebook.com/391465331637929/posts/581975012586959/ Here's to a wonderful 2020 for us all!
