25.01.2022 Sometimes there are photographs which I adore but don’t end up in the exhibition for one reason or another. This is one of those works. Shot in the Adelaide Botanic Garden as part of my ‘In Our Nature’ series for the 2018 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. 21.01.2022 This is the view from and of our property right now. The sky is a deep orange and we are being rained down on by ash from blazes as close as 11kms from our property. 21.01.2022 Last night by the dam #socialisolation #socialdistancing #home

20.01.2022 Yew!! Our 1 year old dam has only ever been a dried out muddy puddle, and now we have a beautiful, overflowing dam. The torrential rain has been a huge relief from the deeply distressing fire anxiety that has clouded our lives over the past few months. After 75 days of burning, the Currowan fire which was terrifyingly close to us is officially out. The blaze burnt out almost 500,000 hectares and stretched from one end of the Shoalhaven to the other.... 312 homes were destroyed and 173 damaged. It is deeply concerning that we are experiencing such climate extremes. Now the region is dealing with flooding. Having said all of that It is a particularly sweet moment to be able to enjoy our dam and to finally sleep a bit easier now that the fire is out. #climatechangeisreal

20.01.2022 So excited to share the news that I have been selected as a finalist in the '2020 William and Winifred Bowness Photography Prize’. The prize has become an important survey of contemporary photographic practice and one of the most prestigious prizes in the country. Tumbling through the treetops 2020 As our daily lives suddenly transformed due to COVID-19 I embraced this period of self-isolation, using my photographic process as a form of escapism from my pandemic induced anxi...eties. I have been using myself as the figurative element in the landscape, at times emboldened within the landscape, at times fleeing from an invisible threat. Reflecting the dual aspects of my psychological response to the virus and the social isolation from a feeling of claustrophobia and anxiety, to a sense of release and connection to nature. This work will also feature in my upcoming exhibitions next year with @ngunungulla and @martinbrownecontemporary #isolationcreation #tamaradean #knowmyname

19.01.2022 ENDANGERED opening tomorrow! 25 July - 18 Aug Martin Browne Contemporary, Sydney - My new series ‘Endangered’ is a reframing of the notion of ourselves as human beings - mammals in a sensitive ecosystem, as vulnerable to the same forces of climate change as every other living creature. The difference being that the power and responsibility lies with us.... Biologists predict that if we continue carrying on the way we are then by the end of this century 50% of species living today will face extinction. And humans are not immune. To see ourselves as different and separate to the ecology and ecosystem of our planet is leaving humanity unprepared for the world we are currently destroying. ‘Endangered 14’ Pigment print on archival cotton rag Edition of 8 + 2AP’s - This series was able to happen with the generous support of @divejervisbay @theclimatecouncil And special thanks to @Clare_herschell @jonnieleahy @bee_gentle @torybridges and all of the wonderful women and men who braved the elements for me. 19.01.2022 Tonight is the opening of ‘Terra Australis - a survey of contemporary art’ at Galerie Ernst Hilger @galeriehilger In Vienna. The exhibition will be opened by Cav. Simon Mordant AO. Here I would like to raise a glass for the opening tonight, to thank @simon.mordant @imnadinebarta @galeriehilger and to wish them a wonderful opening. Special thanks to Simon for thinking of my work. And thank you Nadine, you have been so wonderful and supportive to work with. 17.01.2022 Opening Wednesday 6-8pm at Macquarie Uni Gallery - ‘About Face: are you a boy or a girl?’ series - To be officially opened by Dr Patrick Corrigan, AM, art collector, businessman, jazz enthusiast and philanthropist. ... Curators: Rhonda Davis and Kate Hargraves - 25 November 21 February 2020 A Macquarie University Art Gallery exhibition Tamara Dean’s About Face: are you a boy or a girl? challenges, with acute adroit, the preconceptions we associate with dress codes, hairstyles and facial features as gender specific. Comprised of androgynous faces, the portraits themselves pose questions of identity and the role it takes in shaping how the onlooker perceives that person to be. Dean calls upon the viewer to reconceive the notion of identity as fluid and symbolic to the way we dress, look and act. The works are atmospherically characterised, using cinematic-lit backdrops that draw the viewer into the subject’s world with arresting beauty that extends the act of looking. 1st Photograph - ‘Brooke’ 75 x 100cm 2nd Photograph - ‘Luca and Aki’ 75 x 100cm - @martinbrownecontemporary #martinbrownecontemporary #tamaradean #androgyny #androgynous

17.01.2022 Thank you @newcastleartgalleryaustralia for including my work in this timely exhibition. #Repost @newcastleartgalleryaustralia For this week’s #OnStillnessExhibition we have chosen this photograph and recent acquisition by contemporary artist @tamaradean. ... . Dean’s ethereal works centre on the relationship between humans and the natural world. Dean reflects that, ’for as long as I can remember I have yearned to be in nature. When I enter a forest, I feel as though I have come home. This deep love of nature informs my life and my art practice I delve into the informal rites of passage and experience that people seek out in nature and create symbolically charged works which aim to bridge the separateness that we as humans create between us and nature.’ . Untitled #4 is part of a 2011 series Dean produced exploring human vulnerability and fragility. While we are navigating our current circumstances, Dean’s evocative images offer solace in a time of disquiet. . 09.01.2022 Every afternoon I make a practice of heading out on our property and photographing myself within the environment. It’s pretty challenging working with the self-timer, and with my own body. 09.01.2022 Was lovely to see the beautiful feature on my work in the recent 'Esquire Columbia Magazine' Thank you María Lucía Hernández Guido I've google-translated Maria's piece below.... Australian Tamara Dean draws on the religious rites to question the viewer on the transcendental sense of these to be transplanted into the everyday . At the same time, asks the inverse question: everyday scenes can be converted into transcendent rituals once changed context ?... Dean's work focused on photography and installations, is dedicated precisely to explore the relationship between human beings and ritual. The photographs published here - her most recent series, The Edge - show images that act as metaphors. All this, of course, with the vast Australian landscape as a backdrop and young at the same time, belong to society and are oblivious to it. See more
