24.01.2022 Tamarama Beach Closed! Due to the corona virus pandemic, Waverly Council has closed the beaches, including our little patch of paradise Tamarama. Surf Lifesaving NSW has also withdrawn patrols to protect the safety and welfare of surf lifesavers from potential infection by the COVID-19 virus and to support the Governments position in discouraging large gatherings of people on beaches across NSW. This means we will not be patrolling for the rest of this season We are prou...d to have continued our legacy of 'No Lives Lost' and thank every one of our members, beachgoers and local community for your support during this shortened season. Please help stop this pandemic; wash your hands, stay indoors, and practice social distancing, so we can see you back at the beach fit and healthy in September 2020. https://www.waverley.nsw.gov.au/top_l/news_and_media/corona

18.01.2022 Repost from @marjorieoneillcoogee A big thank you to @buildcorpgroup for sponsoring such an amazing event and award for all Sydney based artists at the @tamaramaslsc. Local artists have been hit incredibly hard by the pandemic and need all of our support. 17.01.2022 As Anzac Day approaches, new followers of Tamarama SLSC in particular might like to take a quick look at this clip (or indeed all four clips to see the full story) from Hero of the Dardanelles, care of the NFSA, showing a staged landing at Gallipoli, some of which was filmed at Tamarama in 1915. Refer the curators note for more detail. Youll need to use some imagination - remember the beach was a different shape 100 years ago, you wont see Al at the kiosk, no gear shed, playground or grounds carefully manicured by the wonderful Peter! https://aso.gov.au/titles/features/hero-of-the-dardanelles/

17.01.2022 This is Elouera Surf Lifesaver, Stephen Bryen and he has a message for us as we head into weekend......... This is the precaution I take at work every day in or...der to prevent myself from contracting the Corona Virus & bringing it home to my loved ones. Once all of this PPE is on; I cannot take it off, adjust it, go to the toilet or have a drink. Its extremely hot and breathing is difficult when wearing the N95 mask. I want you to know that this pandemic is not over and I want you to please take this seriously. I go to work every day so you can stay home and remain safe. Yes I chose this job. And yes Im happy to continue to work through these testing times to help as much as I possibly can. But I need all of your help too. This weekend while the weather is nice remember you can only gather to a maximum of two. While some of our beaches are starting to open please don't go and congregate. So if you want to exercise; swim and go. To all those people doing their secret' squad swims, parents taking their kids and dropping them at the beach, people sitting in groups in the park at the beach and those having friends around for coffee and dinner, I ask you to think again! You are not just jeopardising my life but for showing a total lack of respect for me, all essential service personal & the rest of society who are doing the right thing. This really is only a short term sacrifice so we can beat this and return to our previous normal social lives. Be a lifesaver and stay at home this weekend and exercise in your local streets and parks. If you do go to the beach - swim and go. If you arrive and it is crowed turn around and go somewhere else. See Surf Life Saving Sydney's beach usage guidance for members here https://bit.ly/34ZyCJA
16.01.2022 #FlashbackFriday Surf-O-Plane From the mid 1950's to the late 1970's the Surf-O-Plane was a popular inflatable surf craft for kids and adults. It was the common first surfboard for kids until they got their first board or drifted away from the beach life. But at Tamarama, they not only fulfilled being a lot of fun, they were the Rescue Board of the period. Often used for one on one rescues and returning to the beach they were particularly successful in rescues behind the Twin...s - the twin rock formation on the southern side of the beach between Tama and Bronte, often a tricky place to rescue swimmers. If there was more than one swimmer in trouble the lifesaver would support everyone on the Surf-O-Plane until a beltman, attached to a belt and reel, swam out to haul everyone back to the beach. A feature of the Tamarama Surf-O-Plane rescue model was they were longer than the kids model and had several handles around the perimeter of the craft.

14.01.2022 #FlashBackFriday 1981 Garie Carnival Surf life saving clubs regularly hold surf carnivals, where clubs compete in a range of beach and rescue oriented events including swimming, running, and ski. The 'fun' six-person chariot race event was run over 60m on soft sand. Pictured is the 1981 Tama Chariot team at Garie Beach. Left to right Paul Griffiths, Ian Crawford, Neill Warren, Wayne Evans and the jockey - was Brenda Miley. The water events that day were cancelled after a sh...ark sighting. 14.01.2022 #FlashBackFriday Royal March Past In 1954 Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip visited Bondi. The finals of a Surf Carnival were organised to be in progress for the royal couple's visit. Events included a royal march past, which we think these two dashing Tamarama Lifesavers were heading to, junior and senior surf races, a mock pillow fight on a greasy pole (still an event at North Bondi SLSC today), running races, and surf boat races. The surf boat races were hampered by a nas...ty sandbar break providing a spectacle for the Royals, check out the National Film and Sound Archives link for a clip of the day https://www.nfsa.gov.au//queen-australia-surf-carnival-bon If you have any historic Tamarama SLSC photos, wed love to hear from you please send us a private message.

12.01.2022 Its international womens day and were celebrating women in surf lifesaving! This year marks the 40th anniversary of womens involvement in active surf lifesaving duties on Aussie beaches. Its hard to believe but women were only allowed to join surf lifesaving as full members on the 1 July 1980, and Tamarama was one of the first clubs to have women keeping the beach safe. One of the women who lead the way was Sandra Fox being the first women to be on the management commit...tee as Chief Training Officer and later Club Captain. Sandra has been recognised for her contribution by being awarded life membership. Bravo to Sandra for breaking down barriers in a male dominated organization and making it easier for women that followed in her footsteps. At Tama were a welcoming and inclusive club of all races genders and sexual orientation. We are striving for gender equity on our patrols by encouraging new female members to train for their Bronze medallion by offering two for one on fees for women who join with a friend. We are also striving to have equal representation of women in leadership on our management committee and as Patrol Captains. If we sound like a club for you register your interest in our bronze medallion course for next season commencing in September 2020. https://www.tamaramaslsc.org/bronze_medallion #WomenInSLS #surflifesaving #InternationalWomensDay #slsaNSW #DiversityandInclusion #TamaramaSLSC

10.01.2022 Have Your Say on the Bondi Memorial Project Waverley Council and LGBTQ+ health organisation ACON are calling for community feedback on the shortlisted designs for the development of a site-specific public artwork in Marks Park, Tamarama. The permanent memorial is to acknowledge the victims and survivors of an epidemic of homophobic and transphobic violence estimated to have claimed the lives of more than 88 gay men and transgender women across NSW between 1970 and 2000.... Several of these crimes took place in Marks Park on the Bondi coastline and were documented in Greg Callaghan's 2007 true crime book, Bondi Badlands and Duncan McNabs 2017 book Getting Away With Murder. The memorial will be located on the south-western side of Marks Park in a peaceful area with a natural framing in the landscape and views across the ocean to Bronte. Waverly Council has committed $100,000 for the commissioning of the memorial. ACON is also fundraising through bondimemorial.com.au. Consultation on the shortlisted designs will run from 3 June until 5 July 2020 at https://haveyoursay.waverley.nsw.gov.au/bondi-memorial Tamarama SLSC is a diverse and inclusive club and supports LGBTIQ members and community. We encourage everyone to have input on this important community project. #TamaramaSLSC #proudbeaches #mysurflife #surflifesaving #lifesaving #LGBTIQ #DiversityandInclusion #ACON

07.01.2022 Happy Friday! Waverly Council Eases COVID_19 Restrictions Waverleys ocean pools, playgrounds, outdoor gyms and sporting courts will be open from today, Friday 15 May.... Waverleys beaches will remain closed as per the Public Health Orders current on Thursday 14 May and access to the water at our beaches for swimming and surfing will be via our existing Swim & Go and Surf & Go corridors. This position will be reevaluated when the new Public Health Orders become available. An anticipated 10-person limit applies to all ocean pools, playgrounds, outdoor gyms and sporting courts. Council staff will be monitoring visitor numbers at Bronte and North Bondi pools to ensure the restrictions are followed. Mayor of Waverley, Paula Masselos, welcomed the easing of some restrictions but reminded the community to remain vigilant at all times. Please remember to observe all current restrictions and follow instructions from lifeguards, Council Ambassadors [staff] and the Police at all times, Mayor Masselos said. Our plans for our public spaces are contingent on the detail of the next round of Public Health Orders which are due to be released soon. If you intend on using our ocean pools, playgrounds, outdoor gyms and outdoor sporting courts and they look busy, please come back another time. We are delighted to be able to reopen some of our beautiful public spaces and urge the community to continue to do the right thing. #oceanlove #covid_19 #mysurflife #swimandgo #surfandgo

07.01.2022 #FlashBackFriday Nude Bathing at Tamarama In 1838 most of the working class of Sydney lived in Pyrmont, Darling Harbour and Ultimo areas of Sydney and it was common for all trades and shops to stop work around 3 or 4 o'clock. Sydney siders, both male and female, would strip their clothes and swim in the cooling waters of Darling Harbour. This bathing was also in the sight of ships, mainly whalers, who were operated by American puritans out of the Cape Cod area of the US. O...utraged Captains complained to the newly constituted Sydney Town Council, and the Governor, to protect their crew from this immoral behaviour. The one and only Council in Australia wrote rules barring daylight bathing in public from 1838 and was in force until 1902, and these rules became the template for all other councils. Everyone in Sydney knew the rules only applied for the area around the town and so beaches like Tamarama, Freshwater, Dee Why and Cronulla became places to swim unregulated and nude bathing was common practice. If you have any historic Tamarama SLSC photos, wed love to hear from you please send us a private message. Thanks to Peter Davis for the history brief.

04.01.2022 #FlashBackFriday Belt and Reel Competition Circa 1910 The belt and reel was a surf lifesaving rescue device invented at Bondi Surf Bathers SLSC and was used for rescues from March 1907, the first design was named the alarm reel. Legend has it the first rescue using the alarm reel was a boy named Charlie Kingsford-Smith, who grew up to be the famous aviator. The reel rested in a frame and sat on the sand. The lifesaver would attach the harness and swim out to the drowning sw...immer attach the patient to the harness and lifesavers on the beach would reel them in. This original design was modernised by members of Tamarama SLSC in 1908 using an 8mm cotton line coated in beeswax and an attached belt and harness. The Tamarama model was readily portable and able to be carried to rescues, the floating bees waxed line negated many of the issues of the heavier line of its predecessor. The harness had a quick-release mechanism allowing the lifesaver to easily escape if the rope tangled around him. The first picture appears to be a surf carnival at Tamarama beach capturing a belt and reel race when Wonderland was still in operation. The other images are examples of the belt and reels in action. The belt and reel were only phased out in the 1990's. If you have any historic Tamarama SLSC photos, wed love to hear from you please send us a private message.
