25.01.2022 Spotlight On Player ... Introducing Craig our marvellous Trumpet player. Craig is one of our newer members, being asked to come along to rehersals after foolishly mentioning to another player that he used to play Trumpet more than 25 years ago...... In those intervening years, he has spent time singing in Choirs and Musical Theatre . Craig was a member of Ignatians Musical Society in Brisbane for 7 years doing Musical Theatre. Volunteering to help build sets for community theatre led to finding work in that industry. He has since built sets for Queensland Ballet , Opera Queensland, Channel 7 and 10. Our Craig is a talented young man indeed. .... His advice to anyone planning on a 25 year break from an instrument would be.... choose the piano Come along to our rehearsals if you play an instrument , also come along to our next concert and listen to our talented bunch knock off some Gershwin, Mozart and Bach. You will be sure to hear Craig as he plays the Trumpet beautifully...

25.01.2022 We hope you enjoyed our Virtual Concert, we all did. The highlight for me was Beethoven’s Scherzo from his 9th Symphony- not an easy piece to play . But it was played with great energy and timing. The link will be there always for you to view whenever you feel like some music. We had some very brave ensemble players and a couple of young kids doing Solo’s which was great too hear. Thank you to all involved , especially the filming and techy side ... Here are a few pictures... See more

18.01.2022 Musical Insults and Putdowns Aaron Copland about Ralph Vaughan Williams "Listening to fifth Symphony of Ralph Vaughan Williams is like staring at a cow for 45 minutes... Tchaikovsky about Brahms "I have played over the music of that scoundrel Brahms. What a giftless bastard" Berlioz about Handel "A tub of pork and beer." Tchaikovsky about Handel Handel is only fourth rate. He is not even interesting Beethoven about Rossini "Rossini would have been a great composer if his teacher had spanked him enough on the backside." Stravinsky about Rachmaninov He was six and a half feet of scowl: Wagner about Chopin "A composer for one right hand." Delius about Elgar Elgar might have been a great composer if he had thrown all this religious paraphernalia overboard. Gerontius is a nauseating work. Sir Thomas Beecham about Elgar’s Symphony No.1 The musical equivalent of St Pancras Station. Sir Thomas Beecham about Herbert von Karajan A kind of musical Malcolm Sargent. Rossini about Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique. "What a good thing this isn't music." Rossini on Wagner "Wagner has beautiful moments, but awful quarters of an hour." Arnold Bax about J.S. Bach "All Bach's last movements are like the running of a sewing machine." Saint-Saens about Ravel If he’d been making shell cases during the war it would have been better for music. Britten about Stravinsky’s opera The Rake’s Progress. "I liked the opera very much. Everything but the music." Prokofiev about Stravinsky "Bach on the wrong notes." Richard Strauss about Schoenberg "He'd be better off shovelling snow than scribbling on manuscript paper." Schoenberg about Richard Strauss He is no longer of the slightest artistic interest to me, and whatever I may once have learned from him, I am thankful to say I misunderstood. Shostakovich and Britten about Puccini Shostakovich: What do you think of Puccini Britten: I think his opera are dreadful. Shostakovich: No, Ben, you’re wrong. He wrote marvellous operas, but dreadful music.

16.01.2022 ARE YOU AT A LOOSE END ON WEDNESDAY EVENINGS? Hi. My name is Barbara Lassiter and I have been playing percussion and keyboard in the Tamborine Mountain Orchestra for years and enjoy it enormously. Being a community orchestra means that there are no audtions and the players are of mixed ability and age, but this brings a special atmosphere to our ensemble. It is great having young people join us and watch them develop over the years. We are extremely lucky to have a very ...experienced musician, Sean Butler, as our conductor. He has helped the less experienced players to realise that they can produce more than they think they are capable of which gives them more confidence. Disappointingly we don't have a full compliment of musicians. We need oboe, bassoon, and horn players and it would be good to increase our string and percussion sections. Do you play one of these instruments? Perhaps you used to play but gave it away through lack of time. We don't mind if you are are a little rusty, because coming along to our weekly rehearsals, you will soon improve. Perhaps you are a late learner. Well we understand how daunting that could be and we are a very friendly bunch of people. Most of us live on the mountain, but we do have players who come from the Gold Coast and surrounds, so don't let your post code prevent you from joining us. Rehearsals take place on Wednesday evenings at St George's Anglican Church, Dapsang Drive, Tamborine Mountain at 7-9 pm. If you are interested you are welcome to come along and introduce yourself or you can contact Russell Harden on 0407 110 183. So, why not brush the dust off your old instrument and come and join us!

15.01.2022 It's nearly time folks! Rehearsals start back next week on Wednesday 15th , 7-9pm. St Georges Church. All current guidelines will be followed to ensure your health and safety. Come and join our friendly Orchestra.... Now is a great time to join us , we welcome new players young or old, does not matter if you have never played in an Orchestra before, or if you are a new player or a player who has not played for years. This term we will be working towards a concert late September. How exciting , finally a concert! The repertoire will be Classical, Irish and Gershwin. Something for everyone. Plus the opportunity to play in small ensembles. Drop us a message on Facebook for more info or just pop along to say Hi on Wednesday.

15.01.2022 Let me introduce Yuki, our new fabulous new Violin player My Aussie husband, and I met in Singapore when we were both working. He was poor and I was a well-paid diplomat for Japan. I quit my dream job, we got married and decided to find our dream home in OZ. ... We discovered Tamborine in 2001 on the dreadful terrorist attack day. We felt safe and sound on the mountain. With our local friends' help, we planted local Tamborine native trees, 8000 of them, one by one by hand, for 18 years. We moved to HK and ready to retire in 2025 but my husband’s flying life suddenly finished due to the Covid pandemic. So, I hardly had any time to enjoy music for many years. I was stuck here and my husband was in HK. I concentrated on building our dream home but after that, I felt very lonely. I had visited the orchestra about 4 years ago. I quietly hoped you were still there. And you were!! Oh, I do enjoy music especially when all the different sound’s make a piece beautiful. I do get nervous and feel rusty after a 28-year break. But I’m so happy to gain so many friends all in one spot! I enjoy painting, singing and cooking (not just Japanese). So, when my house is properly equipped and approved, I would love to invite you in small numbers at a time to test my dishes, then karaoke!! Rehearsals start back after the school holidays, if you would love to join us or know someone who plays- you would be made most welcome. Contact us via Facebook or email [email protected]

Since returning to the Gold Coast, he has been active enjoying a variety of productions in Brisbane including symphony, ballet, film and pop music.
