22.01.2022 TAMIL REFUGEE TAKES HIS OWN LIFE IN MELBOURNE CBD The suicide of a Tamil refugee in Melbourne on 5 December is further evidence that the Australian government’s refugee policies are killing people, the Tamil Refugee Council said today. Varun was just 18 years old and had his whole life ahead of him. But the suffering he endured because of the government’s policies pushed him to the point where he believed he no longer had anything to live for.... We are aware of at least 9 Tamils who have taken their lives by suicide this year. Just a fortnight ago in Brisbane, it was a 25-year-old man on a bridging visa, said TRC spokesperson Aran Mylvaganam. Now we have the death of a young man, who like so many other young Tamils on temporary protection visas woke up every morning and wondered when he would be able to live a normal life. Varun arrived on Christmas Island by boat from India in 2012. He was held in detention for several months before being released into the community. His family is understood to have fled Sri Lanka for India after being threatened by the Sri Lankan military. Varun was granted a Safe Haven Enterprise Visa in 2018, which meant that he had an uncertain future in Australia. He and his mother and sister had to leave their friends in the community in Dandenong and relocate to a regional town without any government support. He was also well aware of the statements by Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton that, eventually, the government wants to send back all Tamil asylum seekers, regardless of the legitimacy of their claims under the Refugee Convention, Mylvaganam said. 20.01.2022 BREAKING: Priya has been medically evacuated from Christmas Island to a hospital in Perth overnight, where she is awaiting a CT scan. After weeks of severe abdo...minal pain, Priya's Christmas Island doctors were adamant that she be seen by mainland healthcare professionals with access to proper testing facilities. We're glad that Priya is in Perth receiving appropriate medical care, but it means she has now been separated from her beautiful QLD-born girls and husband, Nades, who remain trapped on Christmas Island. Today, will you pick up the phone and ask your government MP and Senators to speak up for Priya and her family? To find the right phone number seconds, just tap bit.ly/CallyourMP or bit.ly/RingSenators.

14.01.2022 SRI LANKAN GOVERNMENT DESTROYS TAMIL GENOCIDE MEMORIAL In the late hours of 8 January, Sri Lankan government authorities entered Jaffna University in the north of the island and bulldozed a monument dedicated to the tens of thousands of Tamils killed by the military in 2009. The destruction of the monument is part of the Sri Lankan state’s ongoing attempt to erase symbols of mass killings that it carried out more than a decade ago. The memorial paid homage to the Tamils murd...ered in the Mullivaikkal massacre and was a reminder of the direct responsibility of current Sri Lankan President - Gotabhaya Rajapaksa - in the killings. The memorial was also a reminder of the ongoing struggle for Tamil self-determination. These acts of destruction are further evidence that genocidal process against the Tamil people, who continue to live under military occupation in the north and east of Sri Lanka, is far from over. After the desecration, Tamil protesters gathered outside the university, where at least two were arrested by the army. The Tamil Refugee Council calls on the Australian government to recognise the ongoing persecution of Tamils in Sri Lanka and end its practice of deporting Tamil asylum seekers including Priya Nades from Biloela and to give permanent protection visas to all asylum seekers from Sri Lanka.

01.01.2022 PRESS RELEASE: Permanent protection, not bonded labour 23 September 2020 The Tamil Refugee Council is concerned by media reporting that MPs are considering a proposal to make a path to residency for refugees dependent on them labouring in the agricultural... industrya sector that in recent years has been plagued by reports of abuse and underpayment. Put forward by the Refugee Council of Australia in August, the proposal is that 17,000 temporary protection visa holders be used to fill areas of critical labour shortages while international borders remain closed, in exchange for a concrete path to permanent protection and residency. The Tamil Refugee Council maintains that a refugees right to protection is just thata right. It is not something to be earned or bought. It is independent of a persons capacity to fill a labour shortage. It is difficult to see how the proposal amounts to anything other than a bonded labour scheme attached to the promise of future freedom for people who have already been judged deserving of protection. The Tamil Refugee Council recognises that the Safe Haven Enterprise Visa scheme is already characterised by systematic failures, which the proposal seeks to address. But we maintain that supporters of refugee rights should focus on abolishing temporary protection visas, rather than helping to streamline the processes through which they can be used to sort deserving from undeserving refugees though making individuals economic contribution a determinant of their claim for asylum.
