18.01.2022 PRE-HOLIDAY CHECKS Before you embark on a long trip its worth an extra check to make sure all is well with your car. If youre towing a heavy trailer or caravan with a car with an automatic transmission its worth checking the transmission fluid, and consider having it changed. Check radiator hoses for leakage and replace if they show signs of a leak. Also check engine drive belts for condition and tension. If they appear worn or damaged have them replaced, if they... appear loose have them checked and adjusted. Take particular attention to the condition of your tyres. Check the inflation pressures and reset them to the recommended pressures, which might mean setting them higher if youre loaded up with holiday gear or towing a trailer. 08.01.2022 WEEKLY CHECKS Familiarise yourself with the location of the engine oil dipstick, automatic transmission fluid dipstick, windscreen washer reservoir and cooling system reservoir and how to check the levels and replenish the fluids when needed. Checking these once a week will take no more than five minutes, and may save you thousands of dollars by preventing a breakdown. Also familiarise yourself with the tyre inflation pressures which should be checked weekly and reset as ...necessary. The recommended inflation pressures can be found in the Owners Manual and on a sticker attached to the body. Its usually on the passengers side door pillar, but it may be located elsewhere. Its location is detailed in the Owners Manual. While checking your tyres inspect them for damage that could end in a blow-out. Particularly look for bumps and bruises on the sidewalls front being driven into or over kerbs etc., and check the tread for cuts, splits and nails. Its also worth familiarising yourself with the jack and how to change a wheel in the event of a flat. That way you wont be stuck by the side of the road trying to work out how to use the jack while the traffic is thundering past a metre or so away. Familiarise yourself with your cars warning lights and what they are telling you when they light up on the dash. The lights should all light up when you turn the ignition on as a way of checking theyre working. If any dont come on during that ignition-on phase then have them checked because a faulty warning light may cost you thousands of dollars in repair bills if you miss arent aware of a fault. If a warning light comes on while driving, check it out. Dont keep driving and assume it will go out. Its worth taking a few minutes to investigate and assess the potential danger before driving on. 04.01.2022 How do car engines work? What is a car? A car is an energy converter: a machine that releases the energy locked in a fuel like gasoline (petrol) or diesel and turns it into mechanical energy in moving wheels and gears. When the wheels power the car, the mechanical energy becomes kinetic energy: the energy that the car and its occupants have as they go along. How do we get power from petroleum? Cars, trucks, trains, ships, and planesall these things are powered by fuels made... from petroleum. After being pumped to the surface, petroleum is shipped or piped to a refinery and separated into gasoline, kerosene, and diesel fuels, and a whole host of other petrochemicalsused to make everything from paints to plastics. Petroleum fuels are made from hydrocarbons: the molecules inside consist mostly of carbon and hydrogen atoms (with a fewer other elements, such as oxygen, attached for good measure). When you burn hydrocarbons in air, their molecules split apart. The carbon and hydrogen combine with oxygen from the air to make carbon dioxide gas and water, while the energy that held the molecules together is released as heat. What are the main parts of a car engine? Car engines are built around a set of "cooking pots" called cylinders (usually anything from two to twelve of them, but typically four, six, or eight) inside which the fuel burns. The cylinders are made of super-strong metal and sealed shut, but at one end they open and close like bicycle pumps: they have tight-fitting pistons (plungers) that can slide up and down inside them.
