21.01.2022 UPCOMING HISTORICAL EVENT: On November 10, the 12th/16th Hunter River Lancers will commemorate the centenary of the end of the Great War 1914-1918 by exercising... its Freedom of the City of Tamworth by marching through town. The parade will step off at 1000 hrs and travel along Peel St from Viaduct Park to Bi-centennial Park passing the front of the Council Chambers where it will salute the Mayor, Councillor Colin Murray. The regiment will be challenged at the intersection of Peel and Bridge Streets. On the same day the Regimental Association will commemorate the centenary of the end of the Great War 1914-1918 by unveiling 5 plaques adjacent to the Light Memorial in B-centennial Park, Tamworth. The ceremony will commence at 1100 hrs. The 5 plaques will tell the story of the 4 Light Horse Regiments raised in NSW during the Great War. These regiments were the 1st, 6th, 7th and the 12th. The plaques will cover: the raising of the 4 regiments; Gallipoli 1915; Sinai 1916; and Palestine 1917/18. The purchase of the plaques and their stone bases have been made possible by financial grants from the Federal and State Governments as well as the support of the Tamworth Regional Council. The council has spent money refurbishing the base of the Light Horse Statue and preparing the gardens and the spots where the plaques will be located. Also financial support has come from the Association and private donors. Some extra financial support is needed to help cover the cost of an extra plaque that was added at the last moment so that the full story could be told properly. Anyone who wishes to donate should contact the Project Manager, Major Wayne Clarke, on 0435 877 594. These plaques will join the Charge of Beersheba Plaque that was unveiled last year on the centenary of the famous Charge of Beersheba. An example of what one of the the plaques will say will be posted next. All members of the public are invited to view both events. Also, after the plaque unveiling, a recruiting display will be open adjacent to the Light Horse Memorial. The Regiment is currently conducting a vigorous recruiting drive to increase the numbers of the Regiment. See more

20.01.2022 Today Goonoo Goonoo Station won the adaptive reuse category in the National Heritage NSW awards in Sydney. Simon and I would like to pay particular thanks to T...ony and Karen Haggarty who own Goonoo Goonoo Station and who funded the heritage restoration. Without them Goonoo Goonoo Station would not have been reborn. Simon and I have personally dedicated 4 years to this project. We visited the Tamworth region 5 years ago and saw enormous potential and with a huge dream (and enormous risk) decided to open luxury accommodation and a restaurant. We do not regret our decision. There are many people we would also like to thank:- TKD Architects Chase Projects (Builder) Nature’s Vision Landscaping Stan Sarris (Restaurant Consultant and our Mentor) Pam O’Connor, Tarnished Interiors Today we are so proud to be representing the Tamworth Region in a significant NSW heritage win. We thank you for your ongoing support of our business. Sarah & Simon Haggarty

13.01.2022 RAHS CONFERENCE PROGRAM FEATURED SESSION: SHINING A LIGHT ON YOUR COLLECTION Bookings have now opened for the 2019 RAHS Conference. The conference will be he...ld on 14-15 September 2019 at Tamworth West League Club. One of our featured sessions at the conference is how to unlock the unique stories of local community and family collections. Christine Yeats will give a presentation on the UNESCO Australian Memory of the World Register, a program designed to honour and preserve Australia’s documentary heritage. The Register currently holds 68 items, and as Christine will explain, it is only by the active support of local historical societies that the Register can continue to grow. Christine will also outline the nomination process for 2019 and offer suggestions on how to nominate collections for inscription. Dr Marcelle Scott will review the findings of several reports on the National Library of Australia’s Community Heritage Grants program the primary funding program for community organisations to undertake significance assessments and preservation needs assessments and outline some ideas about how to empower an enlightened people-centred preservation approach. Finally, William Oates, UNE Archivist and Director of the UNE Heritage Centre, will reveal his insights into managing a regional archive, and provide practical advice on aspects like security, storage and digital reproduction, as well as privacy protections and ensuring copyright ownership is respected. Additional sessions throughout the Conference will cover a variety of topics, ranging from Tamworth’s fascinating past to recent innovations in digital media and information technology. Tamworth Historical Society have also organised additional opportunities for delegates to learn about the history of Tamworth, with pre-conference drinks at Calala Cottage Museum and Saturday tours.
