23.01.2022 The JobKeeper provisions in the Fair Work Act have been extended to continue past 28 September 2020, with some changes. One of the changes is that qualifying em...ployers can no longer use the original JobKeeper provisions to make agreements with eligible employees to take annual leave at half pay, or make requests (which employees couldnt unreasonably refuse) that employees take some annual leave. From September 28, any agreement to take annual leave that was made under these provisions stops applying. After this date, the usual rules about taking annual leave apply. Your award, enterprise agreement, employment contract or workplace policy may set out how to take annual leave, including if employees can be directed to use leave. 17.01.2022 Today I was talking to a business manager who is preparing for a new employee to start work in a few days. We were looking at ways of making the person feel welcome on their first day. Normally we'd make a welcome package and have their desk set up in advance. But what are people doing when the new employee is working from home?? My suggestion was to give them a voucher from a local business as a welcome (ie coffee vouchers at a cafe local to their house - if they are open). What are other people doing? What would you want if you were the new employee?

Under new state legislation passed this week, it is now a criminal offence for employers to knowingly underpay their staff and Directors and business owners face jail time if found guilty. - Wage theft is a criminal offence in Queensland punishable by up to 10 years in prison for stealing and a maximum of 14 years in jail for an offence of fraud. - Workers, or a Union on behalf of a worker, can initiate the process by making a comp...laint to Queensland Police. - The process involves conciliation for cases up to $20,000. - Workers, or a Union on behalf of a worker, can initiate a civil claim instead, through a new Industrial Magistrates Court if they choose. Set their desk up in a welcoming way. Show them you are excited to have them join your team. - Give them a starter kit which might include some basic stationary such as notepads, desk calendar and pens. - Check in regularly with them on the first few days to make sure they are going ok or if they need any h...elp - Provide them with a buddy who can be their go to person for general workplace questions and to make sure they feel welcomed. - Dont overload them with paperwork give electronic copies of documents, rather than reams of paper. - It is very important that they dont feel like they are in the road and you dont have time to get them up to speed. Ensure they are doing meaningful and relevant activities as soon as possible. - Familiarise them with their work team and encourage activities which will help them build working relationships with relevant team members.
