18.01.2022 GETTING READY FOR AUSTRALIA DAY TOUR DOWN UNDER. Dear Tango Turtle Friends, To celebrate the Tour Down Under Stage 5, Willunga will be sporting green and gold with the Australia Day theme. Tango Turtle family & friends felt it appropriate to share an Australian Classic, the Poem of Mulga Bill’s Bicycle by Banjo Paterson. ... 'Twas Mulga Bill, from Willunga Hill that caught the cycling craze;' We thought it only fitting to change Eagle Hawke to Willunga Hill, and have a sculpture of his bike hopefully with Mulga Bill on it. Have a great Australia day on Stage 5 Tour Down Under. Enjoy, from the Tango Team. A BIT OF INFO Andrew Barton "Banjo" Paterson (1864- 1941) was an Australian bush poet, journalist and author. He wrote many ballads and poems about Australian life, focusing particularly on the rural and outback areas. The poem actually featured the Safety bicycle. However, the poem has been inaccurately illustrated by various illustrators with a depiction of the visually more interesting Penny-farthing that had been superseded at the time the poem was written. The introduction of safety cycles gave rise to a bicycling boom with millions being manufactured in the decade 1890-1900. They were very popular in the Australian outback, widely used by shearers and itinerant workers at the time that Paterson wrote this poem. The model for the character of Mulga Bill was William Henry Lewis (1880-1968), who knew Paterson. Lewis had bought his bicycle as a result of a drought when there was no feed for horses.
