24.01.2022 Ingrown eyelashes are lashes that are growing into the eye which can cause mild to severe symptoms of irritation. Ingrown lashes occur after an eyelid infection ( chalazion or stye ) as scarring from the infection causes rotation of of the eyelash hair root. Optometrists can remove these troublesome eyelashes easily.

21.01.2022 Its Glaucoma Week and Glaucoma is known as the silent thief of vision. This is a painless condition where elevated fluid pressure inside the eye damages the delicate nerves. Here is a patient who came in for a routine eye test to find out that he had lost the upper part of his visual field to undiagnosed glaucoma. He had not been for an eye test for 8 years.

20.01.2022 I use my microscope to examine eyes....and bank-notes!

20.01.2022 A new one for the collection ( on the right). Ive had the larger teapot for a while now.

20.01.2022 This is a corneal graft held in with several stitches. Previously, this eye was effectively blind due to scarring of the central cornea. A donor cornea was stitched in 8 months ago, and it is looking clear. The rest of the stitches will be removed in the next 3-4 months.

19.01.2022 This news story explains why it is important to check the vision in each eye individually. Once a week is recommended for people who have diabetes or retinal changes.

19.01.2022 Some of my patients will remember when Hanson Road was new.

19.01.2022 Tricia and I had the pleasure of working with William since June 2018. This week, he has joined a practice in Canberra in a full-time position and we are so happy for him. Yes, he bought a face-mask before he left.

14.01.2022 Tricia, William and I thank you for your support in 2018 and wish you all a Merry Christmas. Tannum Eye Care will be open during the Festive Season, except for the public holidays.

13.01.2022 This looks like a pterygium but it is actually the start of a squamous metaplasia cancer. Please dont ignore red eyes.

11.01.2022 When glasses fog up, contact lenses are a great solution.

11.01.2022 Thank you for sharing.

10.01.2022 This is an intra-ocular implant which is in placed in the eye after the lens of the eye is removed for cataract surgery. Most implants are inserted behind the pupil and we cant see them. This implant is placed in the front because of surgical complications.

10.01.2022 Tannum Eye Care will be open for Urgent Conditions on Mondays and Wednesdays. I will be available at Judith Cooper Optometrists on Tuesdays and Fridays for urgent cases only. Judith Cooper Optometrist is in Tank Street, Gladstone 49723308.

09.01.2022 Sometimes eyelids can interfere with vision. This patient underwent lid-lift ( blepharoplasty) recently with an Ophthalmologist which resulted in better visual field and improved appearance. ( before and after photos are shown).

08.01.2022 Type 2 diabetes can be reversed. Is there too much money selling medications to diabetics influencing our so called Health Associations ? Do cereal manufacturers and fast-food giants influence government policy?

07.01.2022 It is a simple fix for an obvious problem.

07.01.2022 Recently, I visited my lens laboratory in Brisbane. Shamir Lens has millions of dollars of robotic equipment to grind and coat the lenses I prescribe. Shamir Lens employs over 100 people who work around the clock to provide fast service. For me, the best part is having so many optical mechanics and lens experts at Shamir to work with. This machine is a blocking machine that adds a chuck to the front surface of the lens so that the prescription can be ground from the back surface ( somewhat like a wood-lathe). The chuck is glued on with a biodegradable plastic. Previous technology used lead-based metals which has a low enough melting point not to damage the lens.

06.01.2022 This is very special.

06.01.2022 Happy Easter Everyone. We are closed over Easter. For emergencies over the Easter Weekend, ring 0408 102000. There will be a $45 after hour fee and eye checks will only be available in Tannum Sands, not Gladstone.

06.01.2022 A few weeks ago, I enjoyed the company of the women at the Boyne Tannum Bowls Club. I am a sponsor for their annual Masters Invitational Bowls Competition.

04.01.2022 Calliope Garden Club puts on a great information day with a fabulous guest speaker every December. I have been to the previous two meetings and I would recommend it.

04.01.2022 This is the location of Judith Cooper Optometrist, where Wendy Wiltshire visits on Tuesdays and Thursdays and second Fridays.

03.01.2022 Sometimes, contact lenses fix more than vision. The first photo is of an injured eye, which was hit by a bungee strap. The pupil is very large and cannot constrict, which causes painful glare in the bright daylight. The other problem is that the pupil is much larger than the intra-ocular implant ( circle inside the pupil ) and therefore causes blurring. This opaque, hand-painted therapeutic contact lens works well to reduce glare and improve vision. This eye now sees 6/6.

02.01.2022 I am happy to be a sponsor for the Boyne Tannum Ladies Bowls Club Invitational Masters Competition. President Margaret and club members run an excellent event and look after the visiting players. A fun time of fellowship was had by all.

02.01.2022 I am biased. Here is my favourite patient.

01.01.2022 Pterygium is a RED FLAG for melanoma. If you have one of these on your eye, you are at 24% increased risk of melanoma. This result was found after 24000 cases of pterygia in Western Australia was analysed. This photo is of a 57 year old woman who has a large pterygium across her right eye. Because it has invaded the cornea within the pupil zone, it needs to be removed to preserve vision.

01.01.2022 The building where Tannum Eye Care is located, was established before BSL.
