24.01.2022 Today we had our first Lions Mane harvest isnt it beautiful! Lions Mane (Hericium erinaceus) is an important medicinal mushroom used in Traditional Chinese Medicine and has since gathered significant interest as a phytomedicine, for the management of cognitive decline and neurodegenerative diseases due to its profound nootropic and neuroprotective activities. Lions Mane fruiting body and mycelia contain a huge amount of structurally different and potentially bioactiv...e constituents, including polysaccharides, meroterpenoids (i.e. hericenones), cyathane diterpenoids (i.e. erinacines), steroids, alkaloids, and lactones. Lions Mane has been found to stimulate nerve growth factor (NGF), promote neurite outgrowth, and enhance myelination in both in vitro and in vivo studies. Clinical trials have shown that Lions Mane benefits cognition, depression, anxiety, and other nervous system symptoms. If that isnt enough, Lions Mane has also demonstrated antimicrobial, anticarcinogenic, immunomodulating, anti-fatigue, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective, nephroprotective, antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties, as well as having modulating effects on the gastrointestinal, nervous, and circulatory systems. 24.01.2022 Herbs The main reason I took interest in studying Naturopathy was the complexity and application of herbs for health. I was working in the Kimberley at the time, and was blown away by the use of traditional native medicines in Aboriginal communities of the region. For those who propose to know, and arrogantly state it is not practiced anymore, or is a lost artform YOU ARE SO WRONG! The study of Native Australian Medicine is a specific area of interest for me, however th...e compilation of evidence based research (and authorisation from the TGA) on our indigenous plants is not quite there for broad use in practice just yet! So I will focus over the coming posts on some western and eastern herbs I use regularly in my practice. Considering the current emphasis on immunity, and, in reality, its overarching implications on our health Ill share the herbs in my standard immunity blend. The usual suspects are: *Astragalus *Echinacea *Liquorice *Lions Mane *Withania Ill break each of these liquid gold babies down, so you may appreciate the multifaceted bundle of biochemical goodness they contain! Which one would you like to hear about first..? Immunity blends available via order [email protected] $25: 100ml - $45: 200ml - $110: 500ml + postage
21.01.2022 Apologies for being MIA from this platform. I am historically bad at it, and Ive been totally immersed into my new home and surroundings - can you blame me? Lets talk lifestyle recommendations, more explicitly, lets talk meditation Who does it? Who has said - I just cant meditate? Ive tried, but I cant sit still? I cant sit for 5-minutes without thinking about whats for dinner, picking the kids up from school, I forgot to send that damn email before I left work! E...tc..? Perhaps you are missing the point? Yes, our mind is continually over-run with thoughts, schedules, to do lists. The act of meditation is accepting things as they are. Learning to quiet the mind and return to equanimity. It, like all other conscious acts in this life, is a learned & practiced discipline. No-one is an expert beginner #nosuchwordascant In September 2018, I decided to do a 10 day Vipassana Meditation course, instructed by the great S.N.Goenka. If you dont know what that is, check it out - https://www.dhamma.org/en-US/index For me it was an incredibly fulfilling & beautiful, but tough experience. To sit 10 days in silence, with only yourself... is a revelation. I could not imagine my life now, without having done so, alone, embracing myself, warts n all. Understanding the impermanence of the body, that all things come and go. That we are only a body. A reflection. To cling, is to create disparity between the past, the perceived future, and the now. *There is no past - let go of the 15kg slimmer version of you, she is gone. *There is no future - let go of the 15kg slimmer version of you that you envisage, he is not there yet. *There is only the now - eat healthier, move more, the 15kg slimmer version of you is being created now! Although Im not saying you should go from "I cant meditate for 2 minutes" to tackling a Vipassana, the truth is - you gotta start somewhere. So put that 2-5 minutes aside while drinking your morning coffee, tea, smoothie or water and see what world awaits you... you may be pleasantly surprised at how much sweeter your tea tastes, or grateful you become for the water that fills your glass (continued in comments)...
21.01.2022 We are watching in horror as our beautiful country faces this unprecedented bushfire crisis. The effects are absolutely devastating now, and will be long into the future. Some health tips below for those affected Nasal saline to assist sinus inflammation Also, a drop of sesame oil rubbed into the nostril acts as a barrier and lubricant Eat antioxidants (fruit + veg +++) to assist in neutralizing free radicals... Support your immune system with garlic + mushrooms Thyme & sage teas if these kitchen herbs are available Thyme oil in a diffuser Magnesium for bronchodilation NAC (n-acetyl cysteine) for liquifying secretions and detox Similarly sulforaphane (eat broccoli sprouts) is a potent activator of phase 2 & 3 detox pathways Herbs such as coriander, parsley, any leafy greens, spirulina all assist the liver in detoxification pathways and help bind with toxins for removal from the body Charcoal tablets also binds with toxins to eliminate from the body, but needs plenty of water to assist in flushing them out Water +++ For adults and children suffering from emotional trauma, tapping techniques really work wonders. For those feeling helpless and wondering what we can do to assist, please contact your local Australian Red Cross centre for blood & plasma donations. Similarly, if you have old linen that may be used for wildlife as some reports are saying there has been over 400 million animals perished For monetary donations, this article has direct bank accounts for deposits https://www.sbs.com.au//here-s-what-you-can-do-to-help-tho Stay safe Xx
20.01.2022 Another reason, deciphering your genetics is so important
20.01.2022 A few posts back, I spoke briefly about sulforaphane. Sulfora-say-what-now? Sulforaphane is a phytochemical constituent found within organosulfur compounds and is isolated from cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, broccoli sprouts, brussel sprouts, kale and cauliflower etc. It is magical It is just one reason that a diet should consist of leafy green and cruciferous veg. And heres a few more - ... Has been shown to protect b-cells (remember those immunity cells?) - an inducer of quinone reductase, helping reduce oxidative stress - cancer preventative, displaying HDAC inhibitory activity - reduces oxidative stress in diabetes, by preventing ROS production, mitochondrial and biochemical dysfunction induced by hyperglycaemia - plus many many more with continuing research released: google this stuff! As I focus a great deal on genetics for my patients which allows tailored and targeted protocols, it is incredible to note how many genetic mutations this constituent assists. Many genes which contain an antixoidant responsive element (ARE) pathway can be upregulated by sulforaphane. It works on Nrf2 activity and which, essentially looks to the mitochondria, or powerhouse in each and every cell. As a result, the effects of sulforaphane on inflammation and detoxification pathways are incredible If you have thyroid issues, specifically hypothyroidism and are cautious of consuming too many cruciferous vegetables due to the effect of the goitrogens, then a sulforaphane or pure broccoli sprout powder may be applicable for you. Eat your greens! Claire X
18.01.2022 The world is currently going crazy about COVID-19, but let's take a step back for a moment and talk about immunity. The immune system is like a wall of defence against foreign invaders, think #trumpswall There are many facets of the immune system, including the recognition of invading pathogens, combating them, and what we will focus on today - preventing them from taking over the place.... Immunity comes from eating fruit, vegetables, whole grains, lean protein and healthy fats. Eat high fibre foods, those that are cultured, to support an active and robust microbiome - think pot set yoghurt, kimchi and sauerkraut. Exercise. Adequate sleep. Reduce stress as elevated cortisol negatively impacts immune function. Avoid sugars, alcohol, refined and overly-processed foods. Immunity comes also from adequate nutrients. Ever wonder why Winter is the big bad wolf when it comes to sickness? Lack of sunshine, and more importantly, vitamin D is essential for immune function. Specifically the vitamin D receptor (VDR) is expressed on immune cells; B & T cells and antigen presenting cells. Having adequate vitamin D levels modulate immune responses. The problem here, is vitamin D goes through a 6-point process of chemical processing & transport before it gets to the vitamin D receptor. DNA and genetics have a huge impact on this, however there are 3 things you can do that may help with vitamin D and support the activation of the VDR - 1. Eat more sulforaphane containing products which upregulate the VDR i.e. cruciferous vegetables, broccoli sprouts, kale. 2. Eat more vitamin D containing foods i.e. oily fish such as tuna, salmon, mackerel, herring and eggs. 3. Get some sunshine - although this doesn't guarantee you can convert UVB rays to vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol).... more on that at a later date Take care of yourself, and each other. 17.01.2022 Do you take warfarin? Thats the drug that your pharmacist gives instructions as to avoiding all leafy green vegetables because the vitamin K1 (NOT K2) might in...teract with the drug. Does the pharmacist ever warn you about the interaction between warfarin and paracetamol - the so-called "safe" drug with a shady reputation for liver damage? When you use warfarin and paracetamol together, theres a risk that your blood takes longer to clot, shown as a higher INR reading. Im staggered how often there are no warnings given about this when you consider that so many pain options involve using paracetemol. The system is very keen to warn you off leafy greens but no mention of paracetamol at all...... See more

12.01.2022 KEY FINDINGS: "Following a paleo diet for more than 1 year is associated with unfavorable changes in gut microbiota composition and increased levels of trimethylamine N-oxide (TMAO), an organic compound involved in the development of cardiovascular disease. Compared with individuals who followed a balanced diet that included grains, legumes and dairy, a negative impact on the gut microbiota was observed among those consuming a paleo diet."

11.01.2022 Did you know that data pulled from the 2017-18 Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) National Health Survey shows that only 5.4% of adults and 6% of children met the dietary guidelines of 2 serves of fruit and 5-6 serves of vegetables per day? Only 15% of 18-64 year olds met the physical activity guidelines, and 67% of people are overweight or obese in Australia! The world we live in today gives us access to a huge amount of information to be informed about our health. I am f...labbergasted as a practitioner that this is what we are doing to ourselves. I use a food first philosophy in my practice, which is, of course reinforced by herbs and lifestyle modifications. Many people still do not understand the importance of the food we eat, the minerals, vitamins and trace nutrients that contribute to our physical, mental and spiritual well-being. I challenge you this week of isolation to simply eat the guidelines and see how you feel for it! What excuses do you have?
11.01.2022 Vital information for those that experience kidney stones, as lack of oxalate-degrading gut bacteria predisposes to higher serum oxalate levels and therefore urinary excretion. Consuming calcium at the same meal as high oxalate foods reduces oxalate absorption (by binding it in the gut). Therefore, in predisposed people, supplemental vitamin C increases oxalate levels (as thats the catabolic pathway for ascorbic acid). Vitamin C is sometimes, not just a harmless nutritional supplement! And, in reality, if youre consuming adequate fruit and vegetables - you should not have a need for supplemental vitamin C
10.01.2022 Let me introduce myself - Im Claire, Naturopath, biochemistry nerd, nature lover, dog Mum, soon to be Acupuncturist... Ive had a chequered work life prior to becoming a naturopath; as a deckhand, barramundi wrangler, cook, miner, bar manager, waitress, toilet cleaner, nanny & bank teller - to name a few! Ive lived my life, largely in the tails of the wind, exploring far flung places and experiencing precious moments, with incredible people. I am extremely lucky. And very ...grateful. I am passionate about good health, great food & practical, real-life solutions to improve physical and mental well-being. I have created Tao Naturopathic Health to help my clients live the best version of themselves. The best version of yourself (if you dont yet know) is a unique and gifted individual who already possesses all the tools to be great! In taoist philosophy, all things are relative. So your gifts and talents are relative to your personal experiences, emotions and all those little things that make you, you. And, even though we are essentially the same machine in basic anatomy and physiology, we are all vastly different in what fuel powers us, and pushes us to be better. What powers me? Nutrient-dense food, herbal tonics, dad jokes, daily dog walks in nature, summer, the salty kiss of the ocean, my veggie garden, honesty, compassion and love. What pushes me to be better? The beautiful people who surround me, encourage and inspire me daily, and knowing my purpose, to empower people to be happy, whole & healthy. What makes you great? What powers you? #loveyournaturopath Claire X

07.01.2022 What is a Naturopath? And what do you learn to make you "qualified?" A naturopath is basically a modern herbalist, with a few bells and whistles. A naturopath looks at the whole person, assessing each body system for dysfunction or glitches in biochemical processing. An initial consult will usually go into painstaking detail, even considering childhood illnesses, injury, reproductive history & health, and yes, we even ask about your poo! #assman #seinfeld #proctocologist From... the initial assessment, we then go on to advocate for further specialised diagnostic and functional testing to help us decipher the answers to your riddle. You will receive personalised advice regarding what nutrition (bell) will benefit you, including foods and supplements, herbal tonics, stress management (whistle) and lifestyle advice (another bell). A naturopath looks at the whole person, not 1 small symptom or acute problem. We search for the underlying causes, and in reality this is why we tend to attract clients with complex, and often chronic health conditions. My degree is a Bachelor of Health Science, Naturopathy. The main units studied are; Herbal Medicine, Nutrition, Anatomy & Physiology, Biochemistry, Microbiology, Pharmacology, Critical Appraisal & Differential Diagnosis. Despite the naysayers opinions, I did not spend 4 years of my life listening to old wives tales, devoid of scientific basis or critical thinking! The standards of health science degrees in Australia ensure all educational material and assessment outcomes are applied against evidence based learning. Yes, evidence! Lets debunk the myths about Naturopaths, Herbalists and Clinical Nutritionists as a sub-par medical modality. #weknowourshit #literally The best way to support those of us, within the industry, doing the right thing, is to ask your practitioner what credentials they have and which professional association they are a member of #askaway I am a full member of the Naturopaths & Herbalists Association of Australia, this means I am adequately insured and qualified to deliver health care to you #notafraud #notanoldwife Stay tuned for our next few posts for further details about those bells & whistles
06.01.2022 Today I had an absolute blast educating children and teachers for Intereach : Community in Deniliquin. One topic I cover is how food has really gone mad, and I ...teach kids how to read packet labels. I wanted to share with you a little discovery a 9 year old boy made today when really reading the label of this popular lunchbox drink. He discovered this one little cute drink bottle with "30% less sugar" has 15.3g of sugar in it - thats 3.8 teaspoons of sugar. (some of this will be natural sugar, but since sugar is listed as a 3rd ingredient item, this must be added. He discovered that despite this having the words "no artificial sweeteners, no artificial colours, no artificial flavours", it did have these preservatives listed: - 202 or 211, 223. When he used one of our ipads to look up these preservatives in Chemical Maze he learnt this: 202 is mainly petroleum derived and can cause allergic reactions, asthma, stomach upset, eczema, dermatitis etc and is prohibited in foods for infants. This preservative also gets used in cosmetics and sunscreen. If they dont use 202, then they may use 211 which is also petroleum derived. Has similar symptoms but also includes headaches, hyperactivity, and learning difficulties. And if they dont use 202, or 211 to make this, they use preservative 223 which is made synthetically. Again similar symptoms to 202 but includes suspected respiratory, kidney and immunotoxicity. What I loved about this was seeing how shocked he was, and how he just had to share it with both the teachers in the room. This is a common lunchbox drink - it should not be! Dont be fooled by this cute bottle and the words. Do what this 9yr old boy said "Ill never have that again!".
06.01.2022 I wrote at the outset of COVID-19 about immunity and touched on Vitamin D pathways and genetics. Lets delve into the complexities of these conversions and the enzymes involved. Firstly, I just want to note, that for most of my life being a sun lover, outdoor worker, lucky olive-skinned sister, and looking browner than a berry after 5 minutes in the sun, I NEVER thought there was anything more to vitamin D than - I can get a tan, I must be FINE. Uh-oh, incorrect. Lets clarif...y - 1st step - Producing vitamin D from the sun: to convert UVB rays to cholecalciferol (Vitamin D3) you need a protein present in the skin called 7-DHCR 2nd step - Once you have that vitamin D3 in your hot little bod, you must then convert it to calcidiol (250H Vitamin D) which is assisted by the CPY2R1 enzyme 3rd step - From 250H vitamin D, you need the biologically active form 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D, this one is helped along by the CYP27B1 enzyme 4th step - Due to all of this conversion, we require the body to excrete these unwanted levels so toxicity doesnt occur, this is where CYP24A1 comes into play 5th step - Next we need to transport the biologically active, 1,25-dihydroxy to the rest of the body and then onto the vitamin D receptor, we look at the GC-globulin gene with variant A>C for this 6th step - The last step involves the activation of the 1,25-dihydroxy onto the vitamin D receptor so it can participate with over 900 genes that rely on it for physiological function If you have mutations that affect any of these enzyme activities, your vitamin D status may be compromised. Not so simple as getting a tan huh? If you want to know more - reach out and book an appointment! Claire X

03.01.2022 "You go to any house fire, the fire brigade will be there. The germ theory of disease would say, it is the fire brigade (the germ) who started the fire (the disease). We observe the fire brigade (germ) present at every fire (the disease), therefore it must have been the cause, how could there be any other possible explanation? The terrain theory proposes that, the fire started first (disease / toxins / tissue damage etc), and the fire brigade (the germ), came to put it out..." Interesting that Pasteur has been given much creed for therapies based on antimicrobials. Whereas the natural choice stands with Bechamp, ensuring to restore the endogenous immune defences of the host
