25.01.2022 I cancelled the Facebook Live on Thursday and went surfing instead! (cos #balance #locationindependent etc!) It was my first surf in about 15 months and I only caught 1 wave, and it was freezing, and now Im still so sore I can barely lift my arms above my head but damn it made me feel alive!

25.01.2022 Someone posted a great question in the Art of Estate Planning Facebook Group last week. They wanted to know what is the difference between a testamentary trust, a lineal descendant TT, and a bloodline TT? Are these official types of testamentary trusts, or just marketing jargon? So in this week’s facebook live I'm going to uncover the meaning behind these types of testamentary trusts, and dive into the technical differences between a testamentary discretionary trust and... a testamentary fixed/bare trust. Join us in the Art of Estate Planning Facebook Group this Thursday at 12.00pm AEST/1.00pm AEDT (and don't forget that if you're not a member of the group, you need to join in advance so we can let you in!) https://loom.ly/eCYUY5U

23.01.2022 I wish it was that easy!

23.01.2022 To mark my 35th birthday last week, I commissioned an extra special present for myself! #toTarafromTara I am incredibly lucky to have inherited a ring from each of my grandmothers. Including my maternal grandmothers engagement ring and wedding band. A beautiful Art Deco design with the sweetest diamond. And it only fit on my wedding ring finger. How special! But then I got married, and now I have my own special rings to wear on that finger. ... So my Grans ring has been sitting patiently in my jewellery box as a keepsake that I never really wear. You might have seen on my instagram stories that I have jumped on the decluttering bandwagon lately, and that includes decluttering my jewellery box. To mark my 35th birthday I asked my friend and jeweller extraordinaire Jodi Phillips Fine Jewellery to remake my grandmothers ring into a new design - one that I can wear everyday which compliments my own wedding and engagement rings. We used the gold from my Grans wedding band and the diamond from her engagement band. The result is a modern update to an heirloom piece that I will wear to remember my Gran every day. What do you think? If youve inherited jewellery, do you feel obliged to keep it in its original form or would you remodel it? How would you feel about your beneficiaries changing your jewellery after your death?

20.01.2022 The role of technology in estate planning has changed rapidly in the last few years from the acceptance of digital wills under the informal will legislation to the emergency electronic witnessing legislation we saw as part of the COVID-19 response. Have you kept up with the changes? This week’s Facebook Live with special guest Kimberley Martin will take us on a high level tour of the current landscape of wills and technology, including: *Electronic wills... *Informal wills made using technology *Remove execution of wills using technology (i.e. the COVID-19 response) Join us in the Art of Estate Planning Facebook Group this Thursday at 12.00pm AEST/1.00pm AEDT (and don't forget that if you're not a member of the group, you need to join in advance so we can let you in!) https://loom.ly/DU2HtSo

19.01.2022 Ive been nominated for the black and white challenge, to shine a light on and bring attention to violence against women in Turkey, and all over the world. Its really bloody confronting to have to choose the picture that will be used in the media to report your own murder. Even though femicide is at crisis levels all over the world, I personally feel like its not something that could happen to me. Like Im somehow immune because Im white and have a good job and an enormo...us amount of privilege. This isnt just Turkeys problem. Yesterday I saw some stats from @dvconnectqld that one woman dies at the hands of their partner in Australia every single week. Just wow. Why our government isnt taking this seriously is just completely beyond me. Creating awareness is great but taking direct action is even better. If you want to do something tangible, I recommend making a donation to The Centre for Women in Co @thecentreforwomen.co a not-for-profit in Brisbane working hard every day towards fighting this problem. So here it is. The picture they can use if I join the ranks of murdered Australian women. Praying that this selfie never sees the light of day again.

19.01.2022 Did anyone else cancel all their holiday plans this year due to COVID and forget to replace them? Or was it just me? 2 weeks ago I hit a wall and was feeling so busy (I hate feeling busy!) and like I was doing everything from a place of scarcity instead of abundance (time poor, joy poor, quality time poor). So we decided to drop everything and take an impromptu ‘staycation’. ... And it was glorious! We fed the alpacas, went for some short bush walks, took Nash swimming every day (some days it was just in the kiddy pool in the backyard), sunbaked on the beach and ate home-made ice blocks. Most importantly, I rested and took it slow. It was just what I needed. So anyway, if you cancelled all your big holidays this year, here’s your reminder to make sure you schedule some time off! Even if you can’t go anywhere, the R & R won’t hurt you!

19.01.2022 Its #QueenslandWillsWeek, and I felt inspired to put together a checklist to determine whether you need a will! Remember, even if you dont have a will - you still have an Estate Plan. Your government has very generously given you one! My research* reveals that 9/10 times, a person would much prefer to have their own custom estate plan (ie a will) rather than the off the shelf estate plan under the governments intestacy laws. ... So, in summary, if you tick any of these - you should make a will: You are a human and will die one day You have a job There are people or causes you care about You live in a country with laws about tax and dying If this post was helpful, feel free to share! *Research methods based on interviews, observation and life stories

18.01.2022 These days my camera roll is as full as my heart, but this is my favourite snap from the weekend!

18.01.2022 I read this today and it stopped me in my tracks. Imagine life as a game in which you are juggling some five balls in the air. You name them work, family, health, friends, and spirit and youre keeping all of these in the air. You will soon understand that work is a rubber ball. If you drop it, it will bounce back. But the other four balls family, health, friends, and spirit are made of glass. If you drop one of these, they will be irrevocably scuffed, marked, nicked..., damaged, or even shattered. They will never be the same. From this article by Ryan Holiday referencing a blog post by the author and speaker Chris Yeh quoting a speech by former Coca-Cola CEO Brian Dyson: https://loom.ly/I1JihuE

18.01.2022 I recorded this BLOG post awhile ago but I thought it was worth sharing again. I recorded it after a pretty tough morning resolving some estate planning issues which could have been avoided if: 1. the clients and family knew where the original estate planning documents were stored 2. copies of the documents were available so we knew what they said 3. the clients had reviewed their documents regularly to ensure the documents were still appropriate ... Getting a comprehensive estate plan in place is a fantastic start but it cant be the end of the story. Its absolutely critical that the key people nominated in the estate plan know how to access copies and originals of the documents so that they can take the quick decisive action when needed. . . . #Artofestateplanning #queenofwills #estateplan #estateplanning #goldcoastlawyer #womeninlaw #womeninbusiness #peaceofmind #lawlife #goldcoast #lifeofalawyer #lawinspired #entrepreneur #freelance #goldcoastbusiness #goldcoastlife #locationindependent #financialadvisor #financialadviser #accountant #accountantlife #advicespecialist

16.01.2022 I’ve had a Testamentary Trust in my will since my 20s. I was single, living it up as a solicitor in Brisvegas after being a poor student for practically my whole life, and didn’t have much wealth to my name (other than a full wardrobe & makeup bag!) BUT I did have a life insurance policy of about $500K that automatically came with my super which I wanted to leave to my nieces & nephews via a TT. Now that I’m married to the man of my dreams and have a little boy of my own (plus some serious life insurance!) you better believe I’ve got a TT in my will! TTs aren’t just for the old, wealthy or at risk - they are for everyone. If you want some guidance on when your clients need a TT, I’ve got some helpful checklists & resources in my cheat sheets & TT starter pack on my website at the link is https://loom.ly/XqKhfiQ

15.01.2022 I’m always talking about how valuable testamentary trusts are, but does that mean every person should include on in their will? Not always. Check out my VLOG about when it’s okay NOT to use a testamentary trust in your will https://loom.ly/PWCK7pI #Artofestateplanning #queenofwills #estateplan #estateplanning #goldcoastlawyer #womeninlaw #womeninbusiness #peaceofmind #lawlife #goldcoast #lifeofalawyer #lawinspired #entrepreneur #freelance #goldcoastbusiness #goldcoastlife #locationindependent #financialadvisor #financialadviser #accountant #accountantlife #advicespecialist

15.01.2022 It's my 1 year wedding anniversary next week. Which means its 1 year since I signed my new will! Do you have to sign a new will on your actual wedding day... um, no Do you need to make a new will after you get married (or separated)? ... absolutely yes! While the rules in each Australian state do differ slightly, getting married or divorced can have an impact on the effectiveness of your estate planning documents. ... So if you've booked your wedding date, add it to your wedding checklist to update your estate planning documents - you can do it days, weeks or even months in advance so you aren't running around signing your new will on your wedding day like me! If this is helpful for your clients, please feel free to share.

15.01.2022 I’m calling you out. If you’re a financial adviser or accountant and you don’t have an appropriate and comprehensive estate plan, what the hell are you doing? Please know that I say this with kindness & compassion. But it’s time. No more putting it off. Let’s turn this around together by using this as the catalyst for upgrading your estate planning solution for your clients, and use yourself as the test run. I can help you get started. Head to https://loom.ly/XqKhfiQ for inspiration.

13.01.2022 Calling all Australian expats! Has COVID changed your plans about when you're coming back to Aus? 12.01.2022 Only 25% of Australians have an up to date comprehensive estate planning (according to a study by Charles Sturt University & University of Adelaide in 2017). Last I checked the death rate in Australia was 100% Thinking about our own mortality is no fun, but the certainty that we will all die one day is one of the things that makes living life so sweet! So why do 75% of people give up on having peace of mind and getting their affairs sorted? ... 12.01.2022 Heres another short clip from the much larger conversation that I had with John Cachia, one of my students from The Art of Estate Planning online course, explaining why estate planning is the first thing he does with his financial planning clients Do you see yourself as your clients trusted adviser? If youre not helping your clients sort out their estate planning, youre doing them a disservice by not making sure that the goals and legacy plans continue beyond them. You can watch the entire conversation in The Art of Estate Planning Facebook Group here: https://loom.ly/vf6-8Is

12.01.2022 Got kids? You need an estate plan. Heres why: its not just about you anymore. If something happens to you (& your spouse) your kids needs you to have an emergency plan that can snap into action fast. Who will manage the $$, who will take care of them, who will make decisions for you - no confusion, no bickering. Just clear decisive action. the wealth you leave for your children needs to be protected for them. Not exposed to the risks of your spouse entering into a n...ew relationship; not exposed to your childs financial immaturity (how many disaster stories have you heard about 18 year olds blowing through big inheritances?) the last and most boring (but oh so important) reason - Tax. There are BIIIG tax savings to be had if you do it right (aka use a Testamentary Trust). Which sounds super boring, but money makes the world go around and having more of it in your familys pocket can only be a good thing. Bottom line: if you have kids, then getting an estate plan (with a Testamentary Trust) needs to go on your life admin checklist and you need to get it sorted. If this is relevant for your clients, please feel free to share And if you are looking for an easy guide to motivate your clients to take action about their estate plan, Ive got a free conversation template for you at https://loom.ly/XqKhfiQ

11.01.2022 This is a small clip of a much larger conversation that I had with John Cachia, one of my students from The Art of Estate Planning online course, about why he always starts his client conversations with estate planning. Now that might seem kind of morbid, but if you listen to how John approaches the estate planning conversation, it actually sounds like an incredibly meaningful and connected conversation about a clients values and goals for their lifes legacy. Whats not to love?! Do you see yourself as your clients trusted adviser? If youre not helping your clients sort out their estate planning, youre doing them a disservice by not making sure that the goals and legacy plans continue beyond them.

11.01.2022 In this Facebook Live, John Cachia of AFA Group Wealth shares his experience with using estate planning to reinforce his role as his clients trusted adviser. If youre looking for inspiration about how to start helping your clients sort their estate plan - this is it! John will step us through his journey with offering estate planning and shares his insights about why estate planning is a critical ingredient to becoming your clients trusted adviser. See you in the Facebook live in The Art of Estate Planning Group at 12pm this Thursday! https://loom.ly/DU2HtSo

11.01.2022 Have you heard of Googles inactive account manager? Do you have a plan for how your financial controllers can track down all the online information that they might need to sort out your affairs? Most people overlook this when completing an estate plan (if theyve bothered to do one in the first place) but it can be absolutely critical. We all keep a huge amount of information about our arrangements and assets in our email accounts (think bank statements, rates notices, regi...stration details etc) and a lot of this information is important when your affairs are being tidied up. If you dont sign into your Google account for a set period of time (e.g. 6 months), Google will send you an sms 2 months before the inactive period threshold to flag that your account is at risk of being inactive, and if it remains inactive, they will give access to your account to the people you have nominated. I love this idea for estate planning! If this is helpful for your clients, please feel free to share. #Artofestateplanning #queenofwills #estateplan #estateplanning #goldcoastlawyer #womeninlaw #womeninbusiness #peaceofmind #goldcoastbusiness #financialadvisor #financialadviser #accountant #advicespecialist #taralucke #testamentarytrust #TT #financialplanner #wealthcoach #wealthadvisor #financialeducation #moneymanagement

10.01.2022 *Controversial opinion alert* Its time to stop asking people to pick their brain/catch up for a coffee/have a quick zoom chat - without first doing your research, proposing an agenda and being completely clear and upfront in your request about whats in it for you and what you think is in it for them. If you spent 5 minutes looking at my social media you would know I had a baby earlier this year. I talk about it all the time. I work 1 1/2 days a week. While Im working I p...ay a baby sitter to be with my son. My baby is exclusively breastfed and wont take a bottle. He relies wholly on me for his sustenance and this means that even when Im working I am interrupted every 2 hours or so to go sit in a dark quiet room to feed him for about 30 minutes. I get so many requests every day from people to have a quick chat or coffee or zoom. While its flattering, its also obvious to me that most havent looked at my website, downloaded any of my free resources, joined my free Facebook group or read any of the free estate planning education emails Ive sent them if theyre on my mailing list. Im incredibly generous with my free content. I also have an online course that will probably answer all the questions and tell them exactly what they are planning on asking me for free. Im not against connection - in fact, I thrive on it and think its an essential part of doing business. But next time you ask for someones time - be completely transparent about your proposed agenda, what youre getting out of it and what you think they will get out of it. Because, in my case, I need to decide not only if its worth giving up one of the few precious hours a week that I get for meaningful creation, but I am also paying someone else so I can have this conversation with you. Im not just working for free - Im actually out of pocket. And this is not unique to me. Were all in the same boat. Whether you have kids or not, time is one of our most precious commodities and we could all do with more time to spend with our loved ones, on our own self care or on meaningful creation in our genius zone. I think its time to start doing business differently.

09.01.2022 3 truths & 1 lie can you pick it? I almost studied music at university and then changed my mind last minute and got into law school in the second round of offers I wing everything, and I think people who write lists are totally bonkers! It drives my husband crazy! I’m a chocolate addict I’ll easily eat 3 blocks a week I had braces AND headgear as a child. I’m talking the whole over the head harness look. Don’t you dare ask for a photo.

09.01.2022 Here’s another short clip from the much larger conversation that I had with John Cachia, one of my students from The Art of Estate Planning online course, explaining why estate planning is the first thing he does with his financial planning clients Do you see yourself as your client’s trusted adviser? If you’re not helping your clients sort out their estate planning, you’re doing them a disservice by not making sure that the goals and legacy plans continue beyond them. I’ll be talking about this and more in today’s webinar! There’s still a few spots left - DM me if you want to grab one!

09.01.2022 Got kids? You need an estate plan. Here’s why: it’s not just about you anymore. Not exposed to the risks of your spouse entering into a n...ew relationship; not exposed to your child’s financial immaturity (how many disaster stories have you heard about 18 year olds blowing through big inheritances?) the last and most boring (but oh so important) reason - Tax. There are BIIIG tax savings to be had if you do it right (aka use a Testamentary Trust). Which sounds super boring, but money makes the world go around and having more of it in your family’s pocket can only be a good thing. Bottom line: if you have kids, then getting an estate plan (with a Testamentary Trust) needs to go on your life admin checklist and you need to get it sorted. If this is relevant for your clients, please feel free to share And if you are looking for an easy guide to motivate your clients to take action about their estate plan, I've got a free conversation template for you at https://loom.ly/XqKhfiQ

08.01.2022 Wondering whether you need a will? If you tick any of these - you should make a will: You are a human adult and will die one day ... You have a job There are people or causes you care about You live in a country with laws about tax and dying Remember, even if you don’t have a will - you still have an Estate Plan. Your government has very generously given you one! My research* reveals that 9/10 times, a person would much prefer to have their own custom estate plan (ie a will) rather than the off the shelf estate plan under the government’s intestacy laws. 06.01.2022 I received this DM last week from a financial adviser about the response they had received from their clients lawyer: Why would they want a TT? Doesnt have any tax advantages and money is going to go to their own daughter anyway? The background? The clients daughter is 15 years old & the clients have over $1.5m in assets outside family home. They are now earning $500kpa so asset position is growing rapidly. ... Huh? Sounds like the tax benefits of using a TT could be significant. Not to mention the asset protection advantages of protecting the minor daughter from receiving control of the inheritance at too young an age and from future relationship breakdown risks. Im totally perplexed about the response from the lawyer and why a TT wasnt on the table as an option to at least discuss with the client. My hunch? The lawyer was out of their depth and it was easier to push back than to admit it. Luckily the adviser had the benefits of my online course and the TT starter pack to identify when to push for a second opinion. https://loom.ly/Izkp5NU Find out more at: https://loom.ly/XqKhfiQ

05.01.2022 A little PSA for all the advisers & lawyers out there who have clients sitting on unsigned testamentary trusts wills... MAKE SURE THEY GET SIGNED BEFORE 31 DECEMBER 2020! Why 31 December? Because Revenue NSW has an amnesty for testamentary trusts established in wills signed before 31.12.2020 so that they do not need to irrevocably exclude foreign beneficiaries to be exempt from the land tax foreign person surcharge. And before you tune out and think this doesn't apply to yo...u because your clients aren't in NSW - these rules apply to all Australians anywhere who may have acquired NSW residential property before their death. Which, let's face it, could be your clients (they don't even know it yet!). Freaking out about how to tackle this in 2021? Yeh, me too. If you need more info, there's heaps of discussion going on in The Art of Estate Planning Facebook Group https://loom.ly/wSPEvq4 Tag your friends who need to know about this - it's a huge sleeping issue and I think there's a lot of people who are going to get caught out.

04.01.2022 Hello 2021! Well, January is half way done and that means it’s time to ease my way out of the fog of long lazy summer days by the beach. I’m slowly replacing swims & zooper doopers with my laptop and coffee. And that’s allright by me. In fact, I’m excited for 2021. By supporting as many financial planners, accountants and lawyers as possible to let their inner estate planner run wild with confidence and direction! 02.01.2022 The Doyles Estate Planning list for Queensland came out this week, and I am proud as punch to be included on the list as a recommended solicitor for estate planning. Especially because Ive spent most of 2020 so far on maternity leave. I remember sitting in my office on Eagle Street doing looong looong hours and wondering how on earth I would successfully mix motherhood and a career in the law. It just didnt seem possible. So much has changed since then and I am proud of ...the hard decisions I had to make so that I could navigate a better path for myself. It hasnt been a walk in the park (I get a lot of help and have regular breakdowns!) but I count my blessings every day that I am able to juggle my two favourite jobs in the world! Congratulations to my colleagues who also made the list, its an honour to see my name amongst such an esteemed list.

01.01.2022 The other day I checked my phone and had the best suprise text message ever. I love it when the checklist works! Any othe...r checklist fans out there?
