25.01.2022 Sports Massage and Running: Bio-mechanically, running requires a lot of repetitive movement. Although a large majority of your muscles are being used, they dont work in isolation. The main muscle groups used during running gait are the gluts, hamstring, quad and calf muscles. (Basically all your leg muscles) During running, these muscles go through sustained muscles contractions as they contract and relax to create movement. The larger the contraction the more force is creat...ed and the greater the power output. Essentially equating to how fast and long you run. The more your muscles fibers are asked to contract the more they are forced to shorten. If you are running or training frequently this builds up over time. If youre not great at looking after your body in between e.g. with your recovery and stretching etc., then this can become an issue. Resulting in tight shortened muscles, decreased joint range of motion and reduced circulation. Long story short your ability to perform with be hampered. You dont need to be a trained athlete to be eligible for sports massage. Even recreational runners need to look after their bodies too. Sports Massage should be used as a preventative tool to reduce the risk of injury and this applies to everyone. Heres a short breakdown: Sports massage: would usually focus on the muscles you use for your sport. This may be at different levels of pressure, depending on which stage of training you are at. The main point of sports massage is either recovery, prevention of injury or loosening muscles for performance. Sports m...assage can be deep tissue, but sometimes it can also be medium pressure to flush the muscle for example. Therapeutic massage: usually applies when we are using massage as therapy. This may be full body or part of the body. Therapy may be in a physical sense or on a mental health level. Its often a great way to seek improvements over a regular treatment period. Examples may include chronic headaches or overuse syndromes. Therapeutic massage can be deep tissue, but is often of a lighter touch. Remedial massage: is a term used for massage that is specifically fixing an issue using massage as a remedy. This often applies if the client has had an injury and is now using massage within a treatment plan to recover. Remedial massage can be deep tissue or softer touch, depending on the issue being treated. It can be full body, but is usually focused on one or more areas that are causing you discomfort. Sometimes, your whole body hurts. Thats why you came in for a massage, amirite? And other times, your body feels pretty great. 16.01.2022 As the baby boomer generation begin turning 65 statistics show an increasing number of seniors going about their usual activities, playing sports, driving, working and so on. In fact, many at 65 reading this will be appalled I have them in this bracket. In actual fact, I dont really. The clients I bracket as seniors are in their 80s. So I will refer to our 65s as pre-seniors and my 80 year olds as seniors. While many seniors approaching this age bracket already receive mas...sage, many seek it for the first time. From my experience, many are somewhat aware of the therapeutic effects massage must have but many havent actually experienced it. When they do they realize it might in fact be the best thing they can do to help with the common side effects of aging. Senior citizens greatly benefit from massage by gaining an increased range of motion from both strengthening muscles (muscle energy techniques applied) while reducing muscular tension. Most health funds do not roll over the benefits that are left unused as at 31 December, so the portion of your benefits not used by 31 December one year is lost on 1 January the following year. 15.01.2022 Sometimes we spend our entire present thinking about the future. Or the past. Or both. Unfortunately, this sometimes means that we are totally missing out on what is happening for us right now. But what if we have something to learn in the here and now that is absolutely essential to our future success? For me, this applies to massage. Yes, Massage Therapists need Massage Therapy too!! I spend the whole session thinking about how great Im going to feel afterwards. Then ...time absolutely FLIES by and suddenly the massage is over and Im now stuck in the past thinking, Wow wasnt that really great and I should now probably schedule another massage." Regular massage can be SOOO beneficial for your body, especially if you have any chronic pain or alignment issues. Massage will be that much MORE beneficial if you can really take the time to focus in on whats happening in the present moment, whether that is before, during, or after the session. Being fully present in the moment during your massage session will help improve your breathing, help your body relax more fully, and help your body to better integrate the body work from your massage session. Which just means that all the benefits of massage will last that much longer. So take a moment to stop, take a deep breath, and just look around. Or close your eyes if safe to do so and feel the air, smell the smells, and listen to the sounds. You might just notice something you would have otherwise missed. See more
14.01.2022 Massage Therapy and Cycling: knee injuries and low back pain are the most common issues. Very tight glutes and hip flexors put a lot of stress on the lumbar region. Tight glutes and/or quads also pull on the ITB leading into the knee creating a lot of tension and sometimes inflammation. Those who train every day beat up their bodies, and stretching is just not enough for them. Most people arent educated enough with regards to their anatomy and how easily you can injure yours...elf. Recovery is more important than actual training. Massage Therapy is excellent for injury prevention, speeds up recovery of muscles and overall health of the tissue. For any athlete that trains every day in their sport, I recommend most treatments to be more of a flush than deep tissue because muscles are already inflamed from training so hard. You dont want to create more inflammation with a deep treatment. When the athlete has a lighter training week, I would suggest a deeper treatment there. Many of my cycling clients come see me every 1-2 weeks, and then a couple of days leading up to a race/tournament. When you get closer to their competing day you want to focus on getting the muscles ready, rather than relaxing them, so more stimulating techniques. Following a competition should be light with maybe a few purposeful muscle releases. Think about what you want to achieve at the end of the day. By taking care of your body, you will go from a good athlete to a great athlete. See more

At the start of a session, a client may say, Its just my shoulder, thats the only thing thats bothering me, and while this IS true at the start of the session, it may actually change as the session progresses. 13.01.2022 How to "De-Frost" Frozen Shoulder Pain. "Frozen shoulder" is a common issue, affecting many people between the ages of 40 to 6o, but its more prevalent in women than in men. And without proper treatment, exercise, regular daily activities, and even sleep can be a challenge. Frozen shoulder can develop for a host of reasons, including injury, surgery, arm fracture, or chronic health conditions, like diabetes or a stroke. Scar tissue forms in the shoulder joints capsule, cau...sing pain, stiffness, and inflammation. In many cases, however, the exact cause isnt knownalmost any shoulder issue can lead to frozen shoulder. When it comes to treating frozen shoulder, clinicians or doctors may suggest using corticosteroid injections, over-the- counter painkillers, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) temporarily to help ease pain and reduce inflammation. 10.01.2022 Even Lifes Big Changes Happen Little by Little Just as it takes a single drop of water, multiplied many times over, to nourish a forest for the season, when it comes to self care its the little things that add up to become the big changes. The 21st century lifestyle means that a vast majority of us are walking around with poor posture (shoulders scrunched up and rolled forward, head and neck forward, mid-back in a forward curve - for an extreme example think hunchback of No...tre Dame). These postural dysfunctions create all kinds of health issues and make tension an ever-present issue. BUT - it can be improved, AND will only happen little by little. Baby steps people!. Try standing with your feet about hip-width apart. Stand firmly, with your feet planted solidly on the ground with the majority of your weight in your heels. It also helps of the weight is mostly held up by the outer edge of your heels. Roll your shoulders up, back, and then down, squeezing your shoulder blades together. Engage your lower abdominal muscles and look straight ahead with soft eyes. How do you feel? Chances are that your spine will feel straight and supported, your lungs will be able to expand freely and easily as you breathe, and you will be expending less energy overall to keep yourself standing. Just like everything else, maintaining good posture takes practice. If your muscles are not accustomed to holding this posture, they will likely tire easily at first. But keep at it. The more you do it, the easier it will become. Before you know it, it will start to feel weird when youre NOT in this posture. With reduced tension and deeper, easier breathing, other things in your life may also start to fall into place. See more

Once you know your sleep quantity goal, you can start thinking about what timing works best for your schedule, and then try to stick to your new sleep schedule, even if your work/life happens at a different time every day. 09.01.2022 Change can be scary sometimes. Even when we are unhappy or in pain, change can seem rather uncomfortable or even a tad overwhelming. As they say, the devil you know is better than the devil you dont. But what if the devil you dont know is actually an angel in disguise? Life can be oh so complicated, and sometimes it can just seem safer to stay in our respective comfort zones. Maybe we have these huge areas of tension in our shoulders, but theyve always been there, and ...after a while they may even start to feel a little familiar. We know where they are, theyre reliable, they know us. However, this kind of comfort is actually a far cry from true comfort. These balls of tension may give us the illusion of comfort, but really we know deep down that wed be better off without them keeping our muscles literally stuck to each other. This is where massage comes in. While we are doing our best to bring YOU into a relaxing state of comfort, we are not trying to make life easy for your knots of tension. We want them out of there! While the kneading of your knots can sometimes be somewhat uncomfortable, maybe even painful, this is what we like to refer to as therapeutic pain. This is the type of pain that hurts so good, because you can tell that its making your knots of tension uncomfortable. Its the type of pain that feels worth it, because you can also feel how it is a (sometimes major) change to your musculature. In this way, you may have to venture out and leave behind your illusion of comfort, (whats holding you back and keeping you stuck), in order to reach a true sense of much deeper comfort. There is nothing quite like the feeling of release, when you can literally feel your muscles letting go of long-held tension. This may even be coupled with an emotional release. (BTW it is totally ok to cry on the massage table if you happen to feel a sudden rush of emotion!). We promise we wont tell. This may all be taking place on a rather subconscious level. We may not even realize consciously what we are holding onto, or how tightly or for how long we have been holding onto it. All of that is revealed to us only when we are able to finally fully release the muscle, and just let it all go. Taking a long, slow, deep breath is a great way signal to yourself and to the universe that you are letting go of something that no longer serves you. In the end the therapeutic pain of the massage, while seeming downright devilish, may have actually been an angel in disguise.

At present we can only offer Remedial Massage Only until restrictions are eased. With the justifiable fears around COVID-19, we would like to inform all our patients of our current hygiene and infection-control safety practices, and extra measures we will be taking to ensur...e our patients and therapists are as safe as possible when receiving treatment at Tara Massage. Our current hygiene measures include single use linen for every patient all our sheets, pillowcases and towels are used only once for each person, and then commercially laundered.
