22.01.2022 Bye bye snaky at least you will be more visible now

22.01.2022 Heres the ugly truth of what people dont tell you about going professional: You will work 13, 14, 15, 16+ hour days. Not for a lavish vacation, but to put fue...l in a truck and a sheepish dinner on the table. 365 days a year. Rain. Snow. Christmas. Funerals. Hot and humid you are there, you are working. People will tell you your six figure horses will never be nice enough and those three/four figure ones will never be rank enough. The biggest shows are the loneliest places. People support you until you become a threat, then they will try and break you down. You will see death and hardships. A lot of hardships. You will want to give up. Why dont people tell you this? Simple. We wouldnt have an industry. What people dont tell you is why you dont give up: When that quirky horse gets it. When you get that first big sale, first client horse, first investor, or the first time your barn fills up. When those few people believe in you and you start getting phone calls of people being sent to you. When a training client strikes it big. When you finish a day and look back at a farm and business you built. Why dont people tell you this? Because theres not a grand enough word to describe that feeling and thats exactly why we are here. 18.01.2022 EQUINE BACK MOTION A lot of people have been asking on the earlier saddle post today about how much the horses back moves during exercise. There are a fair numb...er of papers now published on this but visuals are always good. Here is a short video of a horse walking and trotting on a treadmill viewed from above with painted markers along the spine and IMUs (orange) to record motion. Replayed at half normal speed Copyright Dr David Marlin 2020.

15.01.2022 "The top line muscles develop only when the following three conditions are met: 1. The horse is in front of the legs, i.e. the hind legs push enough for the imp...ulse to travel along the spine to the bit. The rider is able to feel each hind leg touching down as an impulse in the rein of the same side. Any muscle blockages or false bends (energy leaks) that would interfere with the energy transmission have to be removed. 2. The hind legs engage enough so that they touch down underneath the riders heels. This engagement can be produced by riding curved lines and sidestepping with the bend against the direction of travel. 3. The hind legs allow the half halts to go through, i.e. the rider is able to create a connection from the body mass and the reins, through the horses legs, to the ground. When these three conditions are met, the horse will also be relatively well balanced and straight. If the horse is behind the aids, he will not engage his hind legs enough. If the hind legs lag behind instead of engaging, they cant support the back and they are out of reach of the weight and rein aids. If the hind legs are out of reach of the weight and rein aids, half halts cant go through." (Thomas Ritter) Painting: Laura Hughes, www.laurahughespaintings.com

09.01.2022 DIY Cavalettis After spending a number of years building and testing prototypes, here is the Cavaletti design I put together that I am happy to share, for you...r personal use. I have been using this version now of over a year and they are nicely balanced and offer four heights. I created these because I could not find any that had four evenly spaced heights. I found that when working with Cavalettis at different heights having this consistent height difference stopped my horse clipping them as often and stumbling. These are 155, 255, 355 & 455 mm. They are simple to make and cheap if you are handy with woodwork. If not, I had the ends made up by a carpentry company and put them together myself. If you would like more information please make contact. This could be a good COVID-19 project. Please feel free to share with all your horsey friends Parts for 1 x Cavaletti 2 x Ends 2 x 150mm long x 100mm diameter pumblers pvc pipe 6 x 50mm wood screws 1 x 100mm pole (length personal preference - picture is 3m) UV exterior paint
