17.01.2022 Rocky's rehabilitation progress! I was just looking through photos from 6 months ago of my old purebred quarterhorse Rocky when he first came home. I wanted to ...share as I'm very happy with his progress! He's just turned 16yrs old but I feel he looks 10 years younger! For the last 6 months, I have been mainly doing groundwork with Rocky. This is to help him through some of the physical & mental issues that he acquired from being a school horse for the past 7 years. When he came home he was not very sound, pretty sour at times and was quite dead to the aids. He also looked depressed and dull (he did have a winter coat but it was unhealthy, dry with balding patches and flaky skin). I've only ridden Rocky gently a couple of times a month since May as I wanted to concentrate first on building up his topline & strengthen his core without weight on his back. He also had evidence of kissing spines, probably why he used to jack up quite a bit when he was a school horse. Rocky is now barefoot too which I didn't even think possible with this horse! This has helped with healing his lameness issues. My barefoot trimmer Daniel de Boer is absolutely amazing. As I'm learning, it's all in the trimming and the right minerals/diet. Daniel has a wealth of knowledge in barefoot trimming, alternative horseshoes/boots, hoof care, diet, horse biomechanics, and training. He is so excellent with handling the horses, very patient and understands each ones individual needs. I can highly recommend him. Rocky's hooves have gone from being poorly shaped, quite brittle, very sore including stress lines from years of shoeing to now stronger, healthier and is more like a wild mountain pony's hooves! He's still got some old damaged hoof to grow out but in a few months time, they will be even more awesome. Rocky is sugar sensitive and suffered laminitis in the past so it's hard to budge weight on him. He's only on hay, a little lucerne chaff and minerals though still fat as butter. I've just bought him some hoof boots (he needs some extra shock absorption on this really hard summer ground - not only while feet heal more but also from previous damage to his front legs from being ridden with a high head carriage, sunken withers and hollow back which causes more weight on the forehand). With hoof boots, he can do more bush trail work to get him a bit fitter so he can lose some of that fat and continue with his muscle building on his topline. Physically the biggest difference I can see in the photos is in his spine behind the withers (where the saddle would sit). It has lifted and gained some muscle, not such a dip there. It's hard to see under his mane (had to flip the photo on the computer so he's facing the same way to show the comparison of his back - so yes, same horse!) but the under neck muscle is not so overdeveloped now either from being ridden in a poor posture all those years (which puts extra pressure on his back, especially under the saddle). Rocky's famously terrible canter is improving a lot and he doesn't suck his neck back as much anymore. When he first arrived he had a lot of pain at the base of his neck, extremely tight shoulders and hamstrings which also shortens their stride). His walk is improving all the time as are the rest of his gates. He does have a slight rib rotation to the right which can be felt under saddle, but this should improve as he gets stronger and more even (see an article I posted about the horse's thoracic sling). Rocky is also a lot more responsive to the aids. This increased sensitivity is from putting him first in is health, training including groundwork. He is not so grumpy, shut down and now more willing to work with me. I don't do anything fancy, just concentrate on posture and the horse using himself properly. I do mainly Art2ride with him combined with theory learned from Manolo Mendez. I use Manolo's Seretta (bitless lunge cavesson) to take the emphasis away from his mouth. Rocky had previous issues with harsh bits (he was ridden in a kimblewick and chain for years). I also use bamboo sometimes instead of lunge whip to help guide him with his posture (he hated whips too but now I can drape a lunge whip all over him and doesn't care). Under saddle, I ride him in a very soft french link snaffle with no noseband (sometimes now in just a rope halter). Less is more with him. For Rocky, a horse that seemed like he was nearing the end of his ridden career, with a little groundwork and attention to his health requirements I feel that he has many more years left in him. Rocky needs to be active to stay healthy and to help keep on top of his weight issues as well. I feel that this is now achievable with him. I'll post more updates as the progress continues. If anyone needs help with their horse, I'm more than happy to help out as I'm absolutely passionate about this way of working with them!
