27.05.2022 Happy World Turtle Day To celebrate, we're sharing one of our incredible rehabilitation stories. This Eastern long-necked turtle came into our Wildlife Hospital in December with multiple fractures to its carapace. Our expert wildlife veterinary team were able to provide around-the-clock care to treat and help repair the shell, give a thorough pre-release health check and recently, release the patient back into the wild. ... Our Wildlife Hospital Team receives countless native turtle cases each year who have been struck by cars, boats and more distressingly, ingested plastic rubbish and fishing hooks You can help our native turtles by helping keep our rivers and oceans #litterfree! 24.01.2022 You may remember back in November 2020 we shared an x-ray of a female Eastern long-necked turtle with eggs on board. The female had damage to her shell which our Wildlife Hospital team were treating but during her stay she laid the eggs and they were placed in an incubator. Just last week they started hatching! So far we have three tiny hatchlings and another one trying to break through its egg. There were 10 eggs in total placed in the incubator so we will keep you posted o...n how they remaining ones go. These hatchlings will be released soon at a nearby water body. Best of all the mum has been rehabilitated and was released back into the wild last week too! #wildlifehospital #forthewild #turtlepower

24.01.2022 Our Eland herd are back on exhibit! The Eland spent the past few months behind-the-scenes while their paddock was given the opportunity to recover from the impact of the drought. As you can see now, the feed on this paddock is well and truly established and so green. Such a stark contrast from the start of the year. ... We have no doubt the Eland herd are enjoying grazing on their paddock once again.

23.01.2022 2020 Highlight #3: It's been a huge year for the Taronga Western Plains Wildlife Hospital. The team has seen a record number of wildlife cases in addition to looking after the health of all the Zoo animals. 23.01.2022 Today is Asian Elephant Sabai’s fourth birthday! Sabai holds a special place in the Zoo's history as he was the first Asian Elephant calf born in Dubbo. He has definitely grown in size and personality over the past four years. Enjoy this update from Elephant Supervisor Glenn.

22.01.2022 Finally for our #1 highlight for 2020 has to be the release of the Greater Bilbies to Sturt National Park as part of the Wild Deserts program. This was a historic moment for Taronga Western Plains Zoo as well as for the bilbies who returned to an area of NSW where they have been classified as extinct for more than a century. Watch this update from Conservation and Recovery Programs Manager, Andrew. We'd love to hear what was your favourite highlight from this year?

22.01.2022 Too cute not to share more of little Obi. He is now two weeks old but still working out that mum's swishy tail can get him in the face! Be sure to see him when you next visit the Zoo. His herd is located near the Waterhole precinct and mornings are often best to see him as he is most active then.

22.01.2022 2020 Highlight #6 - Back in April we welcomed Kani the hippo calf. He has definitely grown a lot over the past eight months. Recently Kani and Cuddles were introduced to siblings Kendi and Kibbibi and they have been enjoying socialising together in the large grassed paddock at the Zoo.

22.01.2022 Here at Taronga Western Plains Zoo we are home to two different Lemur species - the Ring-tailed Lemur and the Black and White Ruffed Lemur. There is 107 Lemur species on the island of Madagascar, but sadly almost one third are classified as Critically Endangered. According to the IUCN, 103 of the 107 surviving species are threatened with extinction, mainly due to deforestation and hunting in Madagascar. We have a conservation breeding program for the Ring-tailed Lemurs here... in Dubbo which is helping to build an insurance population and educate guests about these amazing animals. Enjoy an insight from Keeper Ally about how she is greeted by our Lemur species each day. #worldlemurday #tarongatv #forthewild #keepercam

21.01.2022 Yesterday the NSW Government announced funding for a Platypus Refuge at Taronga Western Plains Zoo, the first of its kind in Australia. This multi-purpose conservation centre will deliver a rescue refuge facility, research centre, rehabilitation and release and a visitor centre. The refuge will provide capacity to hold over 65 individuals, which is more capacity for the emergency management of Platypus than all of the Zoos and Wildlife Parks in Australia combined. The new ce...ntre will also provide a naturalistic pre-release creek to observe platypus in a wild setting and build their condition before release, as well as allowing us to observe and understand their breeding behaviour. Importantly the new facility will provide a great opportunity for us to engage and educate students and visitors about this unique Australian species and its plight in the wild. It is a very exciting time ahead for Taronga Western Plains Zoo with the announcement of a new Wildlife Hospital as well, that will be built right alongside the Platypus Refuge on the Zoo circuit. Both projects are set to commence construction next year and be completed by late 2022. #tarongatv #forthewild Dugald Saunders MP Matt Kean MP John Barilaro Dom Perrottet MP

20.01.2022 Three Tasmanian Devil joeys have been born to the breeding program this year in Dubbo. Enjoy this update from Keeper Sasha. #tarongatv #forthewild #2020highlights

20.01.2022 October is Mental Health Awareness Month. To shine a light on mental health and help start a conversation, a number of our team members are wearing Australian themed sock covers, scrunchies and lapel pins. It’s been a difficult year for everyone, especially our Victorian counterparts, so it has never been more important to speak to someone and reach out for help. This initiative was Keeper Josie’s idea who created all the items for staff to wear, with the hope this activity will help raise awareness of mental health and also allow people to open up about how they are feeling. Photos with thanks from our team

This year's theme for NAIDOC Week is, Always Was, Always Will Be, and invites all of us to embrace and talk about the true history of this Country a history that dates back thousands of generations. Listen to Kirsty, Leanne and Lowana as they share some Wiradjuri language with you and why keeping language alive is so important. #tarongatv #naidocweek #alwayswasalwayswillbe #wiradjuricountry

19.01.2022 Taronga Western Plains Zoo, Dubbo is an open range zoo where you can enjoy uninterrupted views of herds of animals roaming large paddocks. 19.01.2022 Playtime...elephant style! Visitor Michelle King captured these great images on a recent visit to the Zoo

19.01.2022 One of our much loved residents, Asian Elephant Luk Chai, departed Dubbo yesterday and travelled overnight to Melbourne Zoo to join a group of unrelated females and have the opportunity to contribute to the regional breeding program as a breeding bull. His journey went very smoothly. Like any farewell, we are sad to see Luk Chai leave Dubbo. He has spent the past decade at Taronga Zoo and Taronga Western Plains Zoo learning the skills required to fulfil the role of breeding b...ull from his father Gung. We are also excited by this opportunity for Luk Chai and hopeful that he will succeed in his new role of siring the next generation of calves, creating a new genetic bloodline and in doing so bringing the elephant programs at both Zoos closer together. We look forward to watching him from afar and wish him well in his new home. We filmed this video tribute to Luk Chai with Keeper Bradd about Luk Chai's time at Taronga prior to his departure.

18.01.2022 Over the next 10 days we are sharing the top 10 highlights from 2020. It has been a difficult year for all Australians but there are definitely some positives to reflect on. So let's start the countdown with highlight #10 about Bilbies in the Sanctuary. The Sanctuary at Taronga Western Plains Zoo is home to the Greater Bilby conservation breeding program and this year saw the Bilbies thrive in this habitat, especially after it rained and provided an abundance of natural food... resources for them. Based on extensive monitoring and taking into consideration that many juveniles have already been caught up and identified, a conservative estimate of joeys born in the Sanctuary since this program commenced in October 2019 is at least 50 joeys! Enjoy this update from Bilby Keeper Steve. #tarongatv #2020highlights #forthewild

17.01.2022 Black Rhino Pampoen turns three today! Pampoen’s name means pumpkin as he was born on halloween. He is described by his keepers as quite placid but he can also be quite playful and runs around in the rain a lot. He enjoys a scratch from his keepers and whilst he is very food motivated, kurrajong browse, sweet potato and carrots would be some of his favourite foods. Happy Birthday Pampoen you've grown so much over the past three years.... #tarongatv #forthewild

When we do this, they are inseparable. They play, spar, sleep and eat together from the same trough. Photo: Keeper Hayley Brooks

15.01.2022 Seeing double! We've welcomed our second Giraffe calf in three months. The male calf was born on Monday 21 September and could be seen on exhibit the next day. He has been named Losiligi by his keepers, meaning to have hope in a time of crisis or when things are bad, in Maasai.
