18.01.2022 What does a bee and a flying-fox have in common? Any guesses...? They are both pollinators!... Our research has found that flying-foxes, aka fruit bats, can fly up to 300km in a night! These pollinators are important at a landscape scale, connecting the trees 10s of km apart like a bee cross-pollinates the flowers in your garden. Even though we see grey-headed flying-foxes in urban areas, this species is listed a Vulnerable to extinction due to loss of habitat and population decline. An emerging threat to flying-foxes are extreme heat events, especially temperatures >43C. We’re researching how to conserve these important pollinators with colleagues at Western Sydney University. 10.01.2022 Australian sea lions are now one of the rarest species that call our coastline home. It is estimated that there are less than 6,500 mature individuals left in the wild, with their numbers continuing to decrease. This is due to a range, but also thankfully preventable factors, such as overfishing, fishing line entanglement and pollution. 07.01.2022 Nothing comes between Ella and her morning feed of eucalyptus! Did you know that there are over 600 species of eucalyptus, but koalas only eat about 50 of those species! Now this may seem excessive to some and perhaps you think koalas are fussy eaters but if you think about it..what other animals purely survive of eucalyptus? Now we think that is pretty impressive! #forthewild #tarongatv #animalantics

05.01.2022 It was double trouble for Taronga's keepers when these gorgous Cotton-top Tamarin twins arrived earlier this year! For Cotton-Top Tamarins, twin births are actually more common than single births, and it is common for male relatives such as dad and brothers to do the lions share of the parenting. #forthewild #tarongatv

05.01.2022 Taronga would like to congratulate Tip Top Bakeries on their recent announcement they will be rolling out recycled cardboard bread tags in an effort to reduce their use of plastic. Small changes such as these have huge implications for wildlife and sustainability. It’s estimated that at least 56,000 tonnes of plastic enters our environment every year. And most of thisthe plastic waste you see on our coasts and in our oceanscomes from Australian sources. Sadly each year Taro...nga’s Wildlife Hospital treats hundreds of sick animals with plastic related illness. Alarmingly Taronga’s Wildlife Hospital has treated over 350 marine turtles since 1984, with plastic-related illness. We can all do something to reduce the amount of plastic waste in our environment. Here's what Taronga is doing to reduce its environmental impact- www.taronga.org.au//taronga-zoo-putting-stop-single-use-pl #forthewild

02.01.2022 There is a lot to consider when it comes to releasing an animal into the wild, particularly if it is an animal whose wild population was nearly wiped out by a virus. 01.01.2022 As a modern, conservation zoo, we believe that all of us have a responsibility to protect the world’s precious wildlife, not just in our lifetimes, but for generations into the future. Over 104 years of care, Taronga has had been privileged to develop a unique collection of skills and experience in health, breeding and animal welfare that allow us to operate at the forefront of conservation and play a vital role in the restoration of wild populations for threatened species. ... In 2015, the critically endangered Bellinger River Turtle was almost lost forever when a catastrophic event occurred, wiping out 90% of the population. Over the past five years, Taronga Zoo has been working alongside Department of Planning, Industry and Environment and other conservation partners to breed healthy individuals to be released back into the wild. Join us on Taronga TV as Herpetofauna Keeper Adam takes us behind-the-scenes of the Bellinger River Turtle breeding facility and introduces a few of the animals in his care.
