25.01.2022 SRC Quiz Night The SRC are extremely excited to announce that the recent Olympic Quiz Night raised a total of $3629 - over double their goal of $1500! We would like to acknowledge and thank all the businesses who donated towards the raffle and silent auction, which together raised over $2000 of the total amount. All funds raised will go towards providing new outdoor seating, as well as an additional student microwave for the canteen. ... Thank you also to the incredible Peter G, who volunteered his time to fill in the significant role of quizmaster. We hope everyone who attended enjoyed the night, and look forward to holding similar events in the future.

22.01.2022 2021 Grade 8 Course Guide has been emailed to Grade 7 parents/carers. This guide contains information about the optional courses as well as the procedures and processes for students to select their courses for 2021. Late this week or next week, Julian Muskett, the Grade 7 Assistant Principal will be talking to Grade 7 classes about the Course Guide and how to select their optional courses for next year. Students are required to study English, Maths, Science, HASS and Health ...& Physical Education as compulsory courses. Therefore they are not included in the Course Guide. Students will receive instructions and passwords on how to select their courses online in the first week of next term via their school email address. As part of the process, students must enter a parent/carer’s email address so they receive a copy of their child’s selection. Please make sure your child knows your email address for this part of the process. Once all students have selected their courses, the timetabling of courses then starts. It is at this stage that the decisions are made about which courses will go ahead for 2021 (and those that will not). Generally speaking, at least 25 students are required to have selected a course for it to be on the timetable. Students will be notified of any courses that are not viable for 2021 via the Bulletin and they will then receive their reserve choice instead. If you have any general questions about procedures or processes regarding course selection for 2021 please contact Julian Muskett via email ([email protected]). Specific questions regarding courses should be emailed to course leaders as indicated in the course guide (click on their name for email addresses).

20.01.2022 Paul Dillon and I have had loads of parents of teens submit questions ahead of our Alcohol, Drugs, Parties & Teens masterclass happening one week from today... ...and we're seeing some common themes emerging as people are wondering about: Educating young people about the effects of cannabis on the teen brain. How to navigate friendships where their peers encourage drug use or perhaps aren't the best influence? What's the best approach for hosting teen parties? Should you buy your teen alcohol rather than leave them to find it elsewhere? Honesty and dishonesty... how do you approach things when your adolescent is honest, for example, about smoking pot? And what about when you know your adolescent is lying to you about alcohol or other drugs. If you'd like to hear from one of Australia's leading alcohol and other drug educators and me on how to support your teen to make good decisions and stay as safe as possible, please join us! 10.01.2022 Middle Years Literacy Project On Friday 11 September seven students of Taroona High School took a maxi-taxi to attend the Middle Years Literacy Project Coalition gathering at Lansdowne Primary. Six other schools attended as well, and we all participated in trying to answer our Inquiry Question: ‘What are the most effective teaching practices that enable learners to achieve their best?’ After a series of discussions and some great sushi, we arrived at the conclusion that stude...nt voice should be more prominent in classrooms. We also discussed things that we would like to see in classrooms for the future, with creative answers ranging from more enthusiastic and passionate teachers, to writing prompts that are inspirational and give us a larger frame of ideas. This week, Taroona High School and the MYLP coalition will be participating in Instructional Rounds, which takes groups of teachers to classrooms, where they observe and try to gain data around a ‘problem of practice’. This data will help our 7 and 8 teachers determine how to improve their teaching. We hope that the Middle Years Literacy Project will help students of all schools improve their literacy skills and boost engagement, and we will all continue this program as long as we can to do just that. Victoria Year 7
