24.01.2022 Generous donations see new response vehicle for brigade Wangaratta Chronicle19 August 2020By NICK SINIS AFTER nearly five years of hard work and fundraising resulting in almost $20,000 worth of donations, Tarrawingee’s CFA are proud to have purchased a new ultralight tanker. The brigade used a combination of community fundraisers and a grant from the State Government to help purchase the Toyota Landcruiser, which features a 500 litre water tank, pump and hoses.... Tarrawingee captain Warrick Benton said the brigade was grateful for the community’s support and the vehicle would be vital for the upcoming bushfire season. We were lucky in the first 12 months to nearly raise that amount but the last two years we just backed off a bit because we weren’t too sure how successful we were going to be with the project, Mr Benton said. It has taken five attempts getting it and last year we were successful and they said it would be available in August this year. But with COVID-19 we can’t really do an official hand over so they just said its right to go for operational duties as of now. Mr Benton said it was through various community-based fundraisers and donations that helped raise the money, with the government contributing $2 for every $1 raised. The biggest one we did was we put community flyers in the district to say this is what our intentions were and if anyone wanted to be involved, he said. Then we decided to have a movie night inconjunction with Wangaratta council, we also did fundraising at the FRL festival at Eldorado and Bunnings Warehouse barbecues. Mr Benton said the ultralight tanker would assist members by creating better flexibility when responding to an incident. It’ll be more of a first line response vehicle for the area, and any incidents that may happen on a highway with the wire rope section and will also be available for strike teams in Wangaratta group, he said. If our main tanker goes away on strike teams, that vehicle will be mainly left in the brigade area, as a protection of assets. Our tanker was away for two months last year and we had to rely on Everton with their spare tanker, I’m glad we’ve got this for summer now. Mr Benton said it would also mean more members could be trained to respond, as the heavy tanker requires a truck licence. It’s going to be a good vehicle for the community and we can try get some more members into the brigade and younger members that may not have truck licence, he said. It should also increase our daytime response, if you’ve got a normal vehicle that someone can drive, they don’t have to wait at the shed for someone with a truck licence. 04.01.2022 After five years of hard work raising enough money for our community vehicle it is finally here. I would like to thank everyone involved with this project from Bunnings bbq’s, to movie nights we did it! We will do an official hand over when current COVID restrictions are lifted. All we need now is more members to get involved with this great asset. Once again thanks to all involved. ... Cheers Warrick Benton Tarrawingee Captain. #stablematefortanker. See more
