24.01.2022 No more lazy starts to the day Time to face reality and the back to school car park
24.01.2022 What do recruiters look for? The teacher in me has been seeking some evidence-based research on these topics. A recent study used technology to capture the way recruiter eyes read the content of a resume. The results were eye opening hehe! The resumes were read in a F shape pattern.... What were they looking for? 20% of the time recruiters are looking for keywords 80% of the time were looking for name, previous and current title, start and end dates, and education. What does this mean for you? You need a modern layout to maximise on the F shape. Modern formats have a 60% more success rate. Ensure your key words are in the F shape. Top load and left load the resume! Let me know if you would love to hear more on this topic. Eye Tracking Online Metacognition: Cognitive Complexity and Recruiter Decision Making Evans, W. The Ladders, 2012.
24.01.2022 Covid has taught us that some people thrive working from home. If you are wanting to make the WFH arrangement permanent you can search for the perfect job using Seek. They now have an option to select "Work from home" in the location field. How easy is that! There really is the perfect job for each personality. ... For me, I love both. Definitely more productive at home, but I miss the social connections of a workplace. I have created balance with part-time teaching and running my writing business every night. But I can't resist a sneaky Real Housewives episode during lunch break!
24.01.2022 Yessss...time for some self imposed R and R! The inbox is back to being manageable after the busiest two months of job application writing. Great sign for the job market! Can you guess what I am going to do now... MAFS catch up marathon!... Please tell me I am not alone in this tragic obsession!
23.01.2022 L.E.V.E.R.A.G.E Y.O.U.R. N.E.T.W.O.R.K Today we are discussing one of the best tools to secure a job. Finding a job is hard at the momentbut it can be easier than you think!... With thousands (yes, sadly), thousands of people competing for a single reception job, one of the most effective ways to find employment will be to build relationships. I know it induces fear in some, but the benefits definitely outweigh the fears here. You have already built the know/like/trust factor so employers are more likely to conduct hiring this way. It saves the employer time as they dont have to advertise and interview. Networking brings in a much smaller competition as the employer is not sifting through thousands of applications. Win/win for you both! Leveraging your network in post-Covid employment is going to be critical. Put the call out to the school friends, past colleagues, dance mums, soccer dadsyou name it! A gentle touch base to let them know you are looking could open doors you could never imagine. Can you spot me doing a little bit of networking. Makes me equally anxious and excited! Let me know your best networking connection! ------------------------------------------ Photo courtesy of Qualis Photography at the last GOTG event.
23.01.2022 Supportneeded and necessary, and sometimes it comes from the most unlikely people and places. I have been amazed at the tenacity and support everyday people are providing to Aussies doing it tough after the devastating fires. A highlight of my business journey has been crossing paths with one inspiring lady providing support for a community that I (sometimes reluctantly!) have become a part of. Beck Rayner from Military Wife Life is an epic human building a community of sup...port for Defence partners. This week she talks to Clinical Psychologist, Dr Jodie Lowinger from @sydneyanxietyclinic_ . They talk about coping with traumatic events and natural disasters, like the Australian bush fires. Just felt the need to share this resource as so many of our Defence family, my clients, and their partners, are in unknown circumstances, both here and overseas. Which evokes so many emotions pride in having our significant others lend critical support, but also guilt for wanting them home safe with us. My takeaway was that these feelings are valid, and they can be acknowledged, but ultimately some of them dont serve us and there are strategies we can use in these situations. Get listening to the podcast via the link in the comments, find support and support each other xx
22.01.2022 How does the process work? This is one of the main questions potential clients have. It is super easy and I have worked with clients from every state and territory! The process is simple - what works for you? Most people like to collaborate over email, and some over the phone. No matter where you are, we can make it easy :) ... Pop me a message if you want to start the process too!
21.01.2022 ANZAC Day originally commemorated the anniversary of the Anzacs serving in the Gallipoli campaign. Over time it has become a national day of remembrance to commemorate all Australians and New Zealanders who served and died in all wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations. It is one of those days that instils Australian pride, especially being a current Defence family. Whilst we face challenges, hardships, missed birthdays and milestones, with my husband frequently away, I ...cannot imagine the enormity of the hardships our predecessors endured. On days like today, when you take a moment to reflect on the immense sacrifice our Anzacs gave for our country, you can only feel gratitude for our Defence forces. Always in their debt. Lest we forget.
21.01.2022 Connect, collaborate and empower If you ever saw a room of #womensupportingwomen this event is it! @girls_ofthegram lives up to everything it values. An amazing lady @kalaii_creations founded the most beautiful business events and yesterday was another success for their team hosted at @ivorytusk_ . Came home on a high, reinvigorated to go bigger and start some of those things on the one day list. And got to hang with @theorganisednests and @theartisansbazaar. Winning...! How amazing was the styling by @sisustyling #girlsofthegram #womensevents #collaborate #empower #connect #network #educate #inspire #learn #womeninbusiness #womenruntheworld See more
21.01.2022 If youre in need of a job at the moment, power up that computer! There are segments of the community recruiting in response to this terrible virus impacting the world. However, some industries are in critical need of more employees to meet demands. There have been a range of recruitment drives and this latest one for Government jobs would... be great for so many people facing uncertainty. Admin, operations, nursing, dental and many allied health roles are available now. Link in the comments. If you need any assistance with your application Im just a message away. 21.01.2022 What can you do in 6.25 seconds? Recruiters read your resume in this time! Academic research has shown recruiters read resumes in a systematic pattern. And they take 6.25 seconds to make a yes or no decision. Wow.... That is not much time to make an impact. It is critical to ensure your key information, skills and experience can be read in this time. Set those timers! 6.25 seconds to stand out!
21.01.2022 As you might have realised, I wear lots of hats! Mum is the most important to me, but there is also wife, teacher, resume writer, editor and copywriter in there too! This time I am wearing the teacher hat! Or maybe that should be whistle?! Tonight, I am teaming up with Beck the founder of Military Wife Life to help with some suggestions for at home learning ideas. Join us at 7:30pm (Brisbane time) on the Military Wife Life community page for a live event and we have resourc...es to share too! As Beck says, "Let's do this together". See you tonight!
20.01.2022 Unprecedented times for many Covid impacted industries; hospitality, air travel and tourism, creative arts and entertainment and tertiary education. One year ago we would never have believed that the world's travel would diminish, our restaurants limited to dire capacities and our unemployment levels to soar. We might be in for a long winter, but there are still great stories of employment coming through my inbox. Lots of interviews in Government admin, education and health.... In these times, transferrable skills will be your currency to weather this winter. I already can't wait for Spring and all it brings.
20.01.2022 Got skills? But unsure how they can be put to use? The Australian Government has put together a website for this. Skills Match can show you jobs or careers that utilise your skillset. At the very least it is handy to help you think about some of those transferable skills and maybe even get your mind ticking about new opportunities. ... Link in the comments and I would love to hear what some of your matches are!
20.01.2022 Clients are definitely the best part of my job. And having the opportunity to work with some again is a highlight. Repeat business is the soul of a small business! This beautiful client has returned from last year and here is a little of what she said: ... In 2019, Taryn redeveloped my CV and I immediately got asked to attend multiple interviews and received two job offers in a week. Ive recently reached out to Taryn, due to applying for a new role internally within my organisation. Shes been amazing to deal with and has helped me write my cover letter to highlight my capabilities and strengths. Repeat customers mean everything to this little biz! Such a great sign of happy clients.
19.01.2022 Sure, one wont hurt right. Dont worry, no editing will happen tonight #needed @chandonaus
18.01.2022 It is a privilege to work in female dominated spaces. I am constantly inspired by leaders who challenge stereotypes and lead by example. The future is bright for our next generation of little trailblazers. "An equal world is a enabled world."... International Women's Day 2020

15.01.2022 It has been a while since I popped onto your feeds, so I am dropping in to say hello! Just like this pic, you can see it has been a full month of eyes down into the books (and computer) getting through the work. Covid effects have meant more competition in the job market but still so much success for my clients. The key message is target EVERY application! I think it is going to be another fast and furious month ahead. ... Christmas holidays are on the horizon right?!
12.01.2022 Have you got weak tie connections? With around 80% of jobs being filled before they are advertised on sites like Seek, weak tie connections will yield excellent opportunities for job seeking. The key really is leveraging weak tie connections those people that are one or two steps removed from your inner circle. The class teacher, gym buddy, favourite barista, soccer coach, friend of a friend, old school friends, university associates, or even your neighbours form part of t...he loose tie network. These people travel in different social circles, companies and even industries, ensuring they have access to different insight, information and resources. With multiple modes of communication, maintaining weak tie connections is much easier than in the past. Reach out and connect with your networks. Here are some tips: - Connect with possible leads and show genuine interest - Ask a mutual friend for the introduction - Arrange networking opportunities - Use professional platforms like LinkedIn - Consider professional organisations and annual conferences - Keep in touch and nurture the relationships It is a strange time in employment, dont be afraid to set yourself apart from the rest and seek your new opportunity in a personable way!
11.01.2022 This weekend I am using the slower pace of iso-life to pick up my dedicated copy of Lorraine Murphys book, Remarkably Organised. I came across Lorraine at the start of my biz journey through some podcasts and then saw her speak at a womens event...where the fan girl obsession really took over. She had me at, F*ck the juggle and focus on the blend! I must have spread the fangirl love enough for my sister to arrange for Lorraine to present as a keynote speaker for h...er work event . Admittedly, I was super jealous and seriously considered crashing her work event! But my gorgeous little sis gifted me with this amazing surprise. Super excited to read this book again and implement more processes to make this solo-mum life as efficient as possible! Is anyone else on the Lorraine Murphy fangirl list?
10.01.2022 Current situation. Lucky I work from home #christmashangover #postchristmas
09.01.2022 What do these terms all have in common? .Corporate values! Values can be hard to define but have become essential when setting yourself apart from the competition. It is common for job advertisements and selection criteria to ask questions based on the corporate values of the organisation. ... They might be termed company values, corporate values or core values, and are the fundamental beliefs upon which the business and its behaviour are centred on. They are the guiding principles that set the tone for the company culture, identify what the organisation cares about, and what its people value. When values align then work relationships, job satisfaction, productivity and creativity are achieved. How to demonstrate this in your application: 1. Stalk, stalk, stalk read and research as much as you can about the company values. Check the website, blogs, social media accounts and even reviews to gain as much insight as possible. 2. Show your best attributes employers want the perfect person to be compatible on both a professional but also personal level. Will they like how you handle conflict for example? Ensure you provide examples that reflect the company values, but also work within the team. 3. Use the STAR method to craft your response. I love love love all things people and culture so let me know if I can help with any questions!
08.01.2022 Happy Mothers Day I finally understand why my mum only ever asked for a day of no fighting and no washing
07.01.2022 Resumes are just like real estate Location, location, location! On your resume, your prime resume space is page one! This should be a snapshot that instantly gives the reader a clear overview of your most relevant information. ... Formatting your resume is an important step in creating a professional, readable resume. The strategy you choose should align with the requirements of the job. Do they ask for a Bachelor of Communications? Make sure your Education section makes it to page one. Do they ask for more than two years experience? Make sure your recent experience is clearly on page one. Do they ask for someone with proficient Microsoft Office skills? Make sure it is a key skill you have listed on page one. See the pattern? All about that page one optimisation. The key to resume success is choosing the right strategy for each job. Which means your resume might look different each time. Spend the time tweaking your format to suit each advertisement and make sure you give yourself the best possible chance to be seen. Any questions or need guidance? Just contact me
07.01.2022 Good news time!! It has been an EPIC month of job application writing. But thats not the good news! 07.01.2022 My most precious equipment....the MacBook! It never ceases to amaze me how this little piece of technology is responsible for an entire business. The nature of my client interactions is predominately online and Covid has strengthened this mode even further. Ironically, I have been working with my neighbour on her resume, and we still never met in person to collaborate! It is funny, albeit a little sad, that it was easier to work this way. ... 04.01.2022 Video cover letters are fast becoming a key recruitment strategy for employers. Heres some quick tips! 1 Preparation! Prepare yourself and the recording space. Still dress like its an interview and find a suitable space that suits the job. If all else fails a blank wall is fine!... 2 Keep it short and no more than 60 seconds. Hook them quick and get into it! 3 Have your content planned perfectly like you would a standard cover letter but do not read it like a script. Simple dot points are best. The same language and jargon that you would normally use should be integrated. Natural, relaxed and engaging is key (simple right )! 4 Be warm - get your #smize on and make Tyra Banks proud Show enthusiasm and give direct eye contact to the camera. 5 Finish with finesse - a nice assertive sign off to finish. Simple right Do you love this approach or hate it? Have a guess which one I am? See more

02.01.2022 True or false I have never had a cup of coffee! All true - I find the smell and taste abhorrent ... But I am 100% on board hot chocolate. Especially this weekend when the temperatures have dropped and its time for the winter warmers. Cannot beat a good almond milk hot chocolate For a coffee hater I am missing the coffee shop culture I often head to our local coffee shops to do some writing work to change up the scenery. Lots of signs things are heading to our new normal. Yes to restrictions starting to ease and the job market moving. Resume land was busy this week so it is a great sign and a time to move! Happy Sunday @thebushcollective See more
01.01.2022 Looking for work? I am sure you have already completed these tasks: - Updated your resume.... - Set up a LinkedIn. - Uploaded your resume to job sites like Indeed and Seek. But have you: - Tailored your resume for each job? - Turned your LinkedIn 'on' and started connecting? - Actively used your network to tell friends and acquaintances you are looking for work and here is your resume? Unemployment figures are high, and we need to do more than rely on traditional job sites to find our next opportunity. Get creative and get connecting!
01.01.2022 Balance Cultivating a balanced lifestyle is fast becoming a driver for career change and attracting key talent. It is easy to let work consume our lives, but the movement towards protecting our well-being is growing. Improving our physical, emotional and mental well-being has positive impacts on our careers and career choices . Employers are also recognising this and providing flexible options to encourage employees to optimise their wellbeing. Studies sh...ow that employers can save on costs, experience decreased absenteeism, encourage loyalty and enjoy increased productivity through well-being initiatives . For myself, teaching part-time and establishing my writing business was the key to finding balance for our family. I needed stability and flexibility, so I created it! My husband just deployed again so the #solomum title is back and we are counting down the days until we can have the 5 of us together again. I know that I have to be conscious to balance my family, work and rest (I am so bad at this!) during this time. Have you got an employer that strives to create balance? What is the best work/life balance initiative you have seen?
