25.01.2022 A reminder about the upcoming STEM teaching conference. Friday 26 February 2021 https://pli.education.tas.gov.au/prog/2021-stem-conference/

22.01.2022 Yesterday PIEFA released the findings from our 2020 Food, Fibre and our Future Student Survey. The findings indicate that many primary and high school students... across Australia are still finding it difficult to distinguish where much of their food and fibre comes from. PIEFA Chief Executive Officer, Luciano Mesiti, said that while there have been some changes in the education curriculum to highlight agriculture and its importance to human life, this report shows there is a long way to go. While it’s encouraging that students’ knowledge about industries such as eggs, dairy, fruit and vegetables is much better, there is still a limited understanding about the rice, cotton, aquaculture, grains and oilseed industries. It’s disappointing that over 60% of students don’t know that cotton is used to make jeans and it is derived from the cotton plant, with many thinking it’s made from a non-natural petrochemical. 09.01.2022 A couple of weeks ago our Hampshire Down flock went under the shears to have their annual trim. Students got involved in the whole process, from animal handling... to fleece preparation, and even having a go with the shears. A HUGE thank-you to Josh from Southern Livestock Services for spending the time to impart your knowledge to the students and showing them the tricks of the trade. You can’t beat first-hand experience from people in the industry and students had a blast learning from Josh. 06.01.2022 Fencing and revegetation on farms can have a significant impact on our waterways. The Dalness Farm in Evandale is a great example - the landowner has just insta...lled four stock crossings and 2.3 km of stock exclusion fencing along Roses Rivulet - which flows through Relbia and into the North Esk. The farm has also incorporated 14.6 ha of weed management and over 11,000 stems planted along the waterway as part of the river restoration plan, and this is just stage 1 of 3 stages of environmental improvements to their major riparian areas. Over the next two years, the project will install another 4 km of fencing, undertake 9 ha of weed management and plant a further 7,000 stems. It is an incredible effort and once complete will see hundreds of beef cattle and merino sheep excluded from the rivulet which will significantly reduce the amount of sediment and pathogens that enter the water at the site - plus a myriad of other biodiversity benefits to the farm, and the environment. We would like to commend Dalness Farm team for its co-investment in the project, commitment to the on-going restoration of Rose Rivulet and contribution to the health of our waterways. This project was made possible with funding through the Tamar Action Grants as part of the River Health Action Plan, an initiative of the Launceston City Deal - Working together for a healthy estuary. The next funding round closes 12 February 2021 with NRM North project staff available to guide eligible landholders through the application stage, and beyond. https://nrmnorth.org.au/water/tamar-action-grants/ #TamarActionGrants #nrmnorthtasmania
